The Community Services Department is excited to share with you upcoming activities, special events and courses that we will be offering throughout the month of April

Bronze Star/Medallion/Cross

Bronze Star

Bronze Star is a pre-Bronze Medallion program that provides excellent preparation for success in obtaining the Bronze Medallion award. In Bronze Star, participants develop problem-solving and decision-making skills as they relate to water rescue and first aid. Candidates develop Water SmartŪ confidence and the lifesaving skills needed to be their own personal lifeguard.

 

Prerequisites: 8 years old, recommended age 12 years & Ability to swim.


Dates:
May 7, 9, 14 & 16

Times: 5-7:30pm

Location: North Peace Leisure Pool

Cost: $118.54

 
 

Bronze Medallion & Bronze Cross Combo Class
(see dates below Bronze Cross information)  

 

Bronze Medallion 

This course teaches an understanding of the lifesaving principles embodied in the four components of water rescue education - judgment, knowledge, skill and fitness. Rescuers learn self-rescue techniques, defense and release methods, and tows and carries in preparation for challenging rescues involving conscious and unconscious victims of various types, including spinal injuries and circulatory emergencies. Lifesavers develop stroke efficiency and endurance in a timed swim. Includes CPR-A certification. 

 

Pre-requisites:  Must be 13 years old OR have completed Bronze Star.

 

Bronze Cross 

This course is designed for lifesavers who want the challenge of more advanced training including an introduction to safety supervision in aquatic facilities. Candidates develop proficiency at performing patient assessments, managing aquatic spinal injuries, and preventing the loss of life in a variety of aquatic emergencies, while developing stroke endurance and fitness training skills. Bronze Cross includes the CPR-C certification and is one of the pre-requisite awards for all advanced Lifeguarding and Leadership training programs. Bronze Cross is also worth 2 Grade 11 High School Credits.

Pre-requisites:  Bronze Medallion 
 
Dates: April 9, 11, 13, 16, 18 & 20
Time:  Weekdays 5:00pm - 8:30pm, Saturdays from 9am - 6pm
Investment: $385.27


Community Awards

April 1 is the deadline to get your nominations in, to publicly recognize and honor individuals whose contributions have been of significant benefit to Fort St. John. 

 

On April 25 the City of Fort St. John will be hosting the 5th Annual Community Awards at the Lido Theatre.  

 

Tickets go on sale April 2 at City Hall, the Visitor Centre and Lido Theatre for $35.

Hydro Rider Aquabike

The Hydro rider Aquabike is a unique aquatic indoor stationary bike that allows users to pedal while immersed in the water taking advantage of the many benefits of the aquatic environment. Thanks to this innovative exercise, all users can obtain great results in terms of weight loss, wellness, athletic training and rehabilitation.    

We offer classes every day and are based on a first come, first serve.  This is a drop-in program. Cost is $5.50 per class.

Lunchtime Yoga
Get ready for a new and fun experience that you won't want to miss!  The North Peace Leisure Pool offers adult yoga classes on Mondays and Wednesdays beginning April 8.  Please remember to bring your own yoga mat, water bottle and hand block (if you wish).
Please note that you will need to register for this 5 week program.


Cost: $80.50
Time:  12:10pm - 12:50pm

Pitch-In Week 

The City of Fort St. John is coordinating Pitch-In Week, April 29 - May 3, 2013 as part of the spring clean-up and beautification efforts of the Communities in Bloom program.

During this week, hundreds of community minded volunteers come together in celebration and pride to pick up the wintertime garbage and debris found around our schools, city parks and open spaces.


As part of Pitch-In Week, Pitch-In Day is held each year to encourage community participation in maintaining a tidy City. The City of Fort St. John will be coordinating participating groups to Pitch-In all on the same day, Thursday, May 2.


Groups or individuals who are interested in participating in Pitch In Day may register by April 19 by contacting the Community Development Coordinator at:

   

 

 

Pre School Play Day

Come and join us at our Pre School Play Day at the North Peace Leisure Pool. Every second Thursday of each month, parents and children are invited to come down and take part in fun activities and games geared towards children 5 & under. This is a great opportunity to introduce your children to the world of water while having some fun and meeting new people. Regular pool admission applies.

Road Trip in BC this summer!
Planning your trip should be almost as much fun as actually taking it! So take a few moments and start thinking about your British Columbia vacation. Plan to take a road trip in BC this summer.

Whether you are looking to plan a relaxing circle trip to the numerous hot springs in the Kootenay area (did you know there are 13 hot springs in just this area?) or take a spontaneous camping trip in the Cariboo Chilcotin region, we have the information for you.

 

Explore the Thompson Okanagan's fine wine and orchards, while enjoying the warm weather and picturesque landscapes.

Or perhaps an adventurous holiday hiking or biking the backcountry? We have backcountry map books for the adventurous explorers that want to discover what northern BC has to offer.

Seniors Yoga
Seniors Yoga Fitness is designed specifically for seniors.  The instructor will incorporate a range of skill levels and poses to challenge each participant and attend to their limitations.  Get ready for a new and fun experience that you won't want to miss!  Please remember to bring your own yoga mat, water bottle and hand block (if you wish).


Cost: $61.91 per person (5 weeks)
Time: Tuesday's & Thursday's  10:30am - 11:30am

Stroller Fit

Stroller Fit is a social exercise class that parents can participate in with their young children. There will be a variety of different classes throughout the session, such as exercise stations, relays, intervals, and more. It demonstrates how to use your stroller to keep yourself active, perform basic exercises targeting different areas of your body. Instructors will give healthy eating tips, give you tips for stroller fitness at home and how to get your whole family involved. Get a group of your friends together, or come to meet new people.

Dates: Tuesdays and Thursday, April 16 - May 23
Time: 10:00am-11:00am 
Cost:  $55.00 plus taxes, price includes pool admission. 
Location: Classes will alternate between the Pomeroy Sport Centre and the North Peace Leisure Pool.

Classes on April 25, May 2 & May 9 will be held at the North Peace Leisure Pool. The rest will be at the Pomeroy Sport Centre.


Spring Community One Stop    

The City of Fort St. John would like to invite you to the Community One Stop Registration on April 6. Residents of Fort St. John and surrounding areas have come to rely on the Community One Stop Registration event, held annually in the spring and fall, as their primary program registration method.

 

Come to the Totem Mall on April 6 from 10am to 2pm and sign-up the whole family for your spring activities! There's something for everyone from literacy to dance, sports, health and wellness, art, martial arts, music and more.  Our community has so much for you to do - join in and be involved! 

 

Community groups -don't miss out on this tremendous opportunity to entice new participants and welcome back previous participants to your organization.  Register for a table and showcase everything your organization has to offer. You can download a registration form from our website or pick one up at either City Hall or the North Peace Leisure Pool. Forms must be complete and fees paid by April 2.

Teen Night   

Round up your friends and head to the North Peace Leisure Pool for some TEEN ONLY fun from 7:00pm-10:00pm! The pool will close the doors to the general public and host a themed activity night. You can join in the games and activities, or lounge with friends in the hot spots. There will be lots of pizza, pop and prizes to go around! This event is for teens aged 12 - 16 only.  

 

Cost is $6.00.

The following evening swim events; Hydro Rider, Lap swim & Public swim will be cancelled on March 28 due to Teen Night 7-10pm.

Water Safety Instructor

Water Safety Instructor (WSI) course develops instructional ability by focusing on how to effectively plan and teach the Red Cross Swim continuum: Red Cross Swim Preschool, Red Cross Swim Kids and AquaAdults programs. The course focuses on how to effectively apply the information learned in the Assistant Water Safety Instructor course to the Red Cross Swim programs. Other topics include instructional emergency response skills and stroke development, drills, and corrective strategies. Candidates apply their teaching skills and knowledge during twelve (12) hours of practical teaching. Upon successful completion, candidates are certified as Water Safety Instructors. To remain valid, WSI must be recertified every two years.

 

Date: April 30, May 2,4,& 5 

Time: April 30, May 2 (5-10pm), May 4 and May 5 (9am-6pm)

Location: North Peace Leisure Pool
