The Community Services Department is excited to share with you upcoming activities, special events and courses that we will be offering throughout the month of March

Pre School Play Day

Come and join us at our Pre School Play Day at the North Peace Leisure Pool. Every second Thursday of each month, parents and children are invited to come down and take part in fun activities and games geared towards children 5 & under. This is a great opportunity to introduce your children to the world of water while having some fun and meeting new people. Regular pool admission applies.  

 

Date: March 14

Theme: Sesame Street

Time: 10:30am to 12:00pm

Assistant Water Safety Instructor

This certification course is a prerequisite to the Red Cross Water Safety Instructor course.  The course covers the foundation of instructional skills including teaching methods, learning methods, learning styles, physical principles, progressions, communication, safety supervision and feedback.  Candidates are evaluated during 8 hours of assistant teaching and through individual study assignments.  Upon successful completion of the course, candidates are certified as Assistant Water Safety Instructors, which enables them to co-teach the Red Cross Swim programs under the supervision of a fully certified Water Safety Instructor.  Once certified, Assistant Water safety Instructors have two years to become Water Safety Instructors.

 

Prerequisites:

Time: Friday 6-10pm

           Saturday & Sunday 10am-6pm

           Tuesday & Thursday 5-10pm

$470.00 +HST 

 

Water Safety Instructor

Water Safety Instructor (WSI) course develops instructional ability by focusing on how to effectively plan and teach the Red Cross Swim continuum: Red Cross Swim Preschool, Red Cross Swim Kids and AquaAdults programs. The course focuses on how to effectively apply the information learned in the Assistant Water Safety Instructor course to the Red Cross Swim programs. Other topics include instructional emergency response skills and stroke development, drills, and corrective strategies. Candidates apply their teaching skills and knowledge during twelve (12) hours of practical teaching. Upon successful completion, candidates are certified as Water Safety Instructors. To remain valid, WSI must be recertified every two years.

Time: Weekdays 5-10pm / Saturday and Sunday 9am-6pm

Cost: $383.00 + HST

Babysitting Course  
This course is designed to give young people the necessary tools to be responsible babysitters; keeping children in their care safe and happy. Topics covered include learning about the different developmental stages of children and the skills required to care for them: infants, toddlers, preschoolers and school age children. The babysitter will learn techniques for behavioral problems as well as how to handle emergencies and understand basic first aid skills. They will also complete the program with new ideas of how to entertain the children in their care with games and fun activities. Minimum age requirement is 11 years old.

 

Cost: $94.64
Time:  9:00am - 1:00pm
Dates:  March 16 & 17

Seniors Yoga
Seniors Yoga Fitness is designed specifically for seniors.  The instructor will incorporate a range of skill levels and poses to challenge each participant and attend to their limitations.  Get ready for a new and fun experience that you won't want to miss!  Please remember to bring your own yoga mat, water bottle and hand block (if you wish).


Cost: $61.91 per person (5 weeks)
Time: Tuesday's & Thursday's  10:30am - 11:30am

The Hydro rider Aquabike
The Hydro rider Aquabike is a unique aquatic indoor stationary bike that allows users to pedal while immersed in the water taking advantage of the many benefits of the aquatic environment. Thanks to this innovative exercise, all users can obtain great results in terms of weight loss, wellness, athletic training and rehabilitation. We offer classes every day and are based on a first come, first serve. 
This is a drop-in program. Cost is $5.50 per class.

Lunchtime Yoga
Get ready for a new and fun experience that you won't want to miss!  The North Peace Leisure Pool offers adult yoga classes on Mondays and Wednesdays beginning April 8th.  Please remember to bring your own yoga mat, water bottle and hand block (if you wish).
Please note that you will need to register for this 5 week program.

The National Lifeguard Service� (NLS) 

The Instructor course prepares candidates to teach and evaluate NLS Pool. Instructor candidates learn specific strategies designed to train lifeguards in advanced rescue techniques, public relations issues and first aid, as well as how to present material that will prepare lifeguards for any major aspect of supervising the public in an aquatic setting.  

 

Date: March 20, 21, 22, 23, 27 & 28th 

  Time: 11:00am -8:00pm

Community Awards
On April 25th the City of Fort St. John will be hosting the 5th Annual Community Awards at the Lido Theatre.

This is your opportunity to publicly recognize and honor individuals whose contributions have been of significant benefit to Fort St. John. The awards celebrate the talents, dedication and generosity of citizens, businesses, athletes and volunteers.

Skating- Pomeroy Sport Centre

Spring is just around the corner; this means that the ice at the Pomeroy Sport Centre will be coming out to prepare for the dry floor activities. Come and enjoy the last month of skating!  The last day for public skating is the Devon Canada sponsored skate on Sunday March 24, 2013. This popular sponsored skate will return for another season starting in September 2013.

The Northern Vac Track  

The Northern Vac Track is open year around. Come and join in the walking challenge - The Trans Canada Trail! There is plenty of time to sign up and start your trek or swim across Canada. This challenge will end on April 15th so get trekking Fort St. John.

Stroller Fit

A popular event for parents and guardians of babies and preschoolers is scheduled to be back in April.  Strollerfit is a program that gives adults the opportunity to stay healthy and learn new exercises that they can do with their small children while meeting new friends!

Spring Community One Stop    

Community One Stop event is coming! Register for many spring activities or join a new organization this year. Sports, music, art, dance, fitness and many more groups participate in the Community One Stop Registration event. This year the event will be held in the Totem Mall on April 6th from 10:00am-2:00pm.  

 

Registrations will be available on our website www.fortstjohn.ca by March 6th 2013.

30-day Aquafit Challenge    
If you are looking for something different and fun then this is for you! Try our 30 day Aquafit Challenge starting March 4-April 2.

We have Aquafit classes
every day in the morning and evening. Click here to download the schedule. Log in every fitness class (Hydrorider, Shallow and Deep Aquafit) you attend during our challenge and receive weekly prizes!
 
During spring break, we will have special classes for teens.

Tween Night   

No it's not teen day - it's TWEEN night! The North Peace Leisure Pool will close the doors to the general public so ONLY youth aged 8-12 can have a blast at the pool! Come hang out from 7:00pm-9:00pm! There will be games, prizes, pizza and juice. Enjoy a great night packed with tons of fun! Only $6.00 per person.

Teen Night   

Round up your friends and head to the North Peace Leisure Pool for some TEENONLY fun from 7:00pm-10:00pm! The pool will close the doors to the general public and host a themed activity night. You can join in the games and activities, or lounge with friends in the hot spots. There will be lots of pizza, pop and prizes to go around! This event is for teens aged 12 - 16 only.  

 

Cost is $6.00.

The following evening swim events; Hydro Rider, Lap swim & Public swim will be cancelled on March 28th due to Teen Nights 7-10pm.
