The Community Services Department is excited to share with you upcoming activities, special events and courses that we will be offering throughout the month of February

 

On the left side of this newsletter, you will find helpful links including a link to the online Calendar of Events which has listings for Fort St. John and area.   

 

Adult Water Volleyball

The North Peace leisure Pool will be hosting a drop-in Adult Water Volleyball night on Thursday, February 28 from 8:30pm to 10:00pm.  Come and see our brand new full-size inflatable volleyball net!  This drop-in session will run the last Thursday of each month.   

 

You must be 16 years  old or older to join.  Regular admission applies.   

 

Aquatic Emergency Care

Take your lifesaving training to the next level! If you are planning to be a professional lifeguard or looking for more comprehensive first aid and lifesaving training, Aquatic Emergency Care (AEC) will give you the edge. AEC provides hands-on training in the care of injuries and illness common to both aquatic and non-aquatic settings.  AEC includes all Standard First Aid items.

 

Pre-requisite:  Have completed Bronze Medallion (Must bring proof of certification and Identification)

 

Date:  February 22, 23 & 24

Babysitting Course  
This course is designed to give young people the necessary tools to be responsible babysitters; keeping children in their care safe and happy. Topics covered include learning about the different developmental stages of children and the skills required to care for them: infants, toddlers, preschoolers and school age children. The babysitter will learn techniques for behavioral problems as well as how to handle emergencies and understand basic first aid skills. They will also complete the program with new ideas of how to entertain the children in their care with games and fun activities. Minimum age requirement is 11 years old.

 

Cost: $94.64
Time:  9:00am - 1:00pm
Dates:  February 16 & 17

Become a Lifeguard
The North Peace Leisure Pool is offering the first step in becoming a lifeguard - the Bronze combo course.    

 

Bronze Medallion

This award teaches and understanding of the lifesaving principles embodied in the four components of water rescue education: judgment, knowledge, skill and fitness.  Rescuers learn tows and carries, and defense and release methods in preparation for challenging rescues of increased risk, involving conscious and unconscious victims of various types.  Participants also develop stroke efficiency and endurance in timed swims.  Includes CPR-A.

 

Bronze Cross

This award is designed for lifesavers who want the challenge of more advanced training, including an introduction to safe supervision.  Bronze Cross is a prerequisite for all advanced training programs, including National Lifeguard Service (NLS) and Instructor certifications.  Includes CPR-C 

 

 

Dates: Saturdays, February 2 & 9; Sundays, February 3 & 10

Times: Saturdays 9am - 6pm and Sundays 10am - 6pm

Location: North Peace Leisure Pool Meeting Room

Investment: $385.27 +HST (includes course, manual and all candidate fees)

 

Prerequisites:  You must be 13 years or older or completed the Bronze Star

On April 25, the City of Fort St. John will be hosting the 5th Annual Community Awards!

 

This is your opportunity to publicly recognize and honor individuals whose contributions have been of significant benefit to Fort St. John.  The awards celebrate the talents, dedication and generosity of citizens, businesses, athletes and volunteers.

High On Ice Winter Festival

The City of Fort St. John is pleased to host the 9th annual High on Ice Winter Festival which will take place February 8-11.  

 

High on Ice has become a signature event within our city and partners with many organizations to host all kind of events and activities. High on Ice promotes overall community involvement for all demographics including families, adults, children and seniors. It is an event residents can be proud of and enjoy and celebrate the winter season and outdoor activities.

Events during this winter festival include ice carving, snow sculpting, sleigh rides, children's activities in the park, ice fishing derby, Over the Line ball tournament, comedy shows, pond hockey tournament, dinner and dance and so much more!

 

It is organized by a planning committee made up of various community organizations and interested citizens. If you would like to volunteer to help with the 2013 celebrations, please contact us by emailing  info@fortstjohn.ca.

Lunchtime Yoga
Get ready for a new and fun experience that you won't want to miss!  The North Peace Leisure Pool offers adult yoga classes on Mondays and Wednesdays beginning February 11.  The instructor will incorporate a range of skill levels and poses to challenge each participant and attend to their limitations.  Please remember to bring your own yoga mat, water bottle and hand block (if you wish).

Please note that you will need to register for this 5 week program.

Preschool H2O Play Day 

Celebrate Valentine's Day with your little sweetheart and join us for our monthly Preschool Play Day at the North Peace Leisure Pool. Every second Thursday of each month, parents and children are invited to come down and take part in fun activities and games geared towards children 5 & under. 

 

This is a great opportunity to introduce your children to the world of water while having some fun and meeting new people. Come join us February 14 at 10:30am to 12:00pm for our "Valentine Day" theme. 

 

Regular pool admission rates apply.    

 

 

Senior's Yoga 

Designed specifically for seniors, the instructor will incorporate a range of skill levels and poses to challenge each participant and attend to their limitations.  Please remember to bring your own yoga mat, water bottle and hand block (if you wish).

Skating at the Pomeroy Sport Centre

We have skating for everyone - drop-in hockey, Senior's drop -in hockey, Parent and Tot skating, family skate, teen skate (with theme nights once per month), lap skating and public skating.

 

Our skating schedule and rates can be picked up at the front desk at the Pomeroy Sport Center or viewed at www.fortstjohn.ca.   

 

 

Sweetheart Skate

Bring your sweetheart to the Pomeroy Sport Centre and only pay for one admission.  It's a sweet deal!

 

Time:  6pm-9pm

Date:  February 14 

Cost:  2 for 1 admission for seniors, adults and youth

Location:  On the oval (second floor)

 

Teen Skate

Teens (ages 12-19) are invited to skate in a youth atmosphere, participate in games, eat pizza, skate and have fun with laser lights!

 

Time:  7pm-10pm

Date:  February 16

Cost:  $5.00 per person  

 

   

FREE SKATING on Sundays!!  Each Sunday (until March 24 and then again in the fall of 2013) enjoy free skating from 12:00pm to 5:00pm thanks to our sponsor, Devon Canada!!

 

 

Walk & Swim Challenge  

Due to popular demand, walk & swim challenges are back! Start the New Year's with a great resolution. Join us for our first walking & swimming challenge of the year! "Walk and Swim the Trans Canada Trail". This extraordinary trail is the world's longest network of trails, developed and promoted by a non-profit registered charity. It stretches over 23,000 kilometers from the Atlantic to the Pacific to the Arctic Oceans, linking 1000 communities and all Canadians.  

 

The walking component will take place on the Northern Vac Track located at the Pomeroy Sport Centre and will be free (because we don't charge for people to use the walking track).  If you need a little more of a challenge, the trail also includes water routes, which adds up to 4,600 kms, this component will take place at the North Peace Leisure Pool. For this part of the challenge (at the North Peace Leisure pool) regular pool admission applies.

 

This exciting challenge will start on January 15 and will end March 15.
