The Community Services Department is excited to share with you upcoming activities, special events and courses that we will be offering throughout the month of January

 

On the left side of this newsletter, you will find helpful links including a link to the online Calendar of Events which has listings for Fort St. John and area.   

 

Adult Water Volleyball

Come join in the adult only fun at the pool on the last Thursday of each month from 8:30pm-10pm.  The inflatable court size net comes out and impromptu teams put together for some recreational fun.  Regular admission rates apply.  Join in the fun once again on January 31!

 

 

Christmas Tree Pick-up

Wondering what to do with your Christmas tree once the holidays are over? This year's Christmas Tree Pick-Up will take place January 5. Volunteers from local non-profit organizations will come around and pick up the trees between 10:00am and 4:00pm.

 

Place your Christmas tree at the curb before 9:00am and please remember to remove all decorations, tinsel and plastic tree bags.

Residents may also drop off their Christmas trees off at the City's Snow Removal Dump Site at 79th Avenue and 93rd Street, beside DGS Astro Paving.

 

The Christmas trees that are dropped off and collected will be chipped and used along the trail systems.

Fitness Theory Course

Are you interested in becoming a certified fitness trainer?  The fitness theory course is the first step towards that goal.  This 40 hour course will provide information on how to keep yourself and others fit and well in a safety-oriented environment. Topics will include information on bones, muscles, toning, strengthening and gaining flexibility, principles for your circulatory system, safety, exercise ideas and basic nutrition.  

 

This course is BCRPA recognized. This course is a prerequisite to the Group Fitness Instructor, Weight Training Instructor, Yoga Fitness Instructor, Third Age and Aquafit Instructor courses.

 

Dates: January 18, 19, 25, 26, February 1, 2

Times: Fridays 6-10pm and Saturdays 9am-6pm

High On Ice Winter Festival

The City of Fort St. John is pleased to host the 9th annual High on Ice Winter Festival which will take place February 8-11, 2013.  

 

High on Ice has become a signature event within our city and partners with many organizations to host all kind of events and activities. High on Ice promotes overall community involvement for all demographics including families, adults, children and seniors. It is an event residents can be proud of and enjoy and celebrate the winter season and outdoor activities.

Events during this winter festival include ice carving, snow sculpting, sleigh rides, children's activities in the park, ice fishing derby, Over the Line ball tournament, comedy shows, pond hockey tournament, dinner and dance and so much more!

 

It is organized by a planning committee made up of various community organizations and interested citizens. If you would like to volunteer to help with the 2013 celebrations, please contact us by emailing  info@fortstjohn.ca.

Preschool H2O Play Day 

Come and join us for monthly Preschool Play Days at the North Peace Leisure Pool. Every second Thursday of each month, parents and children are invited to come down and take part in fun activities and games geared towards children 5 & under. 

 

This is a great opportunity to introduce your children to the world of water while having some fun and meeting new people. Come join us January 10 at 10:30am to 12:00pm for our "New Year's Celebration" theme.

 

Regular pool admission rates apply.    

 

 

Senior's Yoga

Skating at the Pomeroy Sport Centre

We have skating for everyone - drop-in hockey, Senior's drop -in hockey, Parent and Tot skating, family skate, teen skate (with theme nights once per month), lap skating and public skating.

 

Our fall skating schedule and rates can be picked up at the front desk at the Pomeroy Sport Center or download a copy at  www.fortstjohn.ca.  

   

FREE SKATING on Sundays  EXTENDED for 2013!!!  Each Sunday the ice is in enjoy free skating from 12:00pm to 5:00pm until the end of 2013 thanks to our sponsor, Devon Canada!!

 

 

Standard First Aid and CPR-C Recertification Course

First Aid & CPR training is basic knowledge delivered in easy-to-follow steps.  We teach you simple routines that you can apply to a variety of situations, from small injuries and conditions to more severe injuries.  This knowledge can turn you from a helpless bystander into someone who can save a life and has the knowledge and skills to help.

 

Pre-requisite: Standard First Aid & CPR-C certification (taken in the past 5 years) - Must bring proof of certification and Identification

Tone it, Shape it, Work it out 

Fitness program  

 

As a result of the success of last year's fitness program, the North Peace Leisure Pool is offering a great New Year's fitness program called "Tone it, Shape it, Work it out". This 8 week program runs Tuesdays and Thursdays starting on January 8 from 6:00am-7:00am.

Along with your registration, you will receive a fitness goodie bag which includes a water bottle, key chain, googles, t-shirt, swim cap, exercise journal and passes for our aquafit class. 

Classes will take place at the North Peace Leisure Pool, walking track at the Pomeroy Sport Center and a local gym.  

Cost: $150 + tax

Walk & Swim Challenge 
 

Due to popular demand, walk & swim challenges are back! Start the New Year's with a great resolution. Join us for our first walking & swimming challenge of the year! "Walk and Swim the Trans Canada Trail". This extraordinary trail is the world's longest network of trails, developed and promoted by a non-profit registered charity. It stretches over 23,000 kilometers from the Atlantic to the Pacific to the Arctic Oceans, linking 1000 communities and all Canadians.  

 

The walking component will take place on the Northern Vac Track located at the Pomeroy Sport Centre and will be free (because we don't charge for people to use the walking track).  If you need a little more of a challenge, the trail also includes water routes, which adds up to 4,600 kms, this component will take place at the North Peace Leisure Pool. For this part of the challenge (at the North Peace Leisure pool) regular pool admission applies.

 

This exciting challenge will start on January 15 and will end March 15.
