Audition Workshop at Actors Pro Expo, 10:15 am
Lead by Rhonda Musak

Mastering the Audition Mindset that Books Acting Jobs

Auditioning is not a random process where an actor throws up their hands and hopes for the best.

Rather, auditioning is a highly skilled, fine-tuned "performance" that is so illusory as to seem completely spontaneous. Supporting that process for an actor is the mindset that they bring into the audition room.

At worst, an actor's mindset has the power to sabotage even the best acting skills. But at its best and most powerful, an actor's mindset has the ability to showcase an actor in a way that highlights and magnifies the acting skills they have to offer.

Mastering the Audition Mindset that Books Acting Jobs is not a sit-in-your seat lecture. Actors will be on their feet during his hour-long seminar making discoveries that will leave them with a mindset ready to be their best in the audition room so they can book that job.

Actors will:
  • Shift their audition mindset from a "get" to a "give" framework, forever changing their auditioning experience.
  • Learn how to walk into an audition room and get the auditioners attention immediately.
  • Experience "the other side of the table" - i.e. what it's like to cast a show.

Chicago: Roy Hart Vocal Workshop
My fabulous vocal coach, Marya Lowry, will be leading a workshop in Chicago. If I were in Chicago in May, I'd definitely be there!

Roy Hart Voice Training
with Marya Lowry & Phil Timberlake

In this weekend intensive Marya & Phil will explore the range of possibilities of the whole voice. Supported by breath, body and emotional energy, they will search for each individual's unique vocal expression from the subtle to the extravagant, the heights to the depths, and the dark to the light.

By connecting body and imagination to vocal impulses, they will explore the voice as a literal and metaphorical instrument of self-discovery, self-expression, and empowerment. Marya & Phil will search for connections of voice to text with the on-going goal of "growing toward performance".

Please bring a poetic text from any genre.

The work includes:
  • physical work to deepen breath connection, awaken and inspire the body to give voice
  • improvisational voice explorations
  • pathways to extended range, color and timbre
  • ecstatic voice
  • voice and text explorations toward performance
  • Roy Hart piano work: the time-honored vocal journeying to expanded vocal and imaginative expression
Whether you use your voice as a professional actor, singer, public speaker, in therapeutic work or for the pure joy of your vocal expression you will emerge from the weekend with renewed resources to enrich your practice and enlarge your performance.

This training weekend is open to all levels and is limited to 16 participants

What's Going on with Acting Class?
GrowFor an actor, acting class is the #1 laboratory for growth and exploration.  It is the place to take risks...a safe harbor where it's okay to let go of perfection in lieu of stretching and expanding beyond limitations.

Class is currently in session...stay tuned for upcoming class info and dates.

Core Acting Technique

Core Acting Technique is a dynamic, structured 10-week class designed to fortify and deepen the skills that go into brilliant acting while stretching students as artists and as human beings.

Acting exercises, take home assignments for in-class work and scene study make up the bulk of each class. This powerful classroom work allows students to grow at a rapid pace while creating an acting foundation that will serve for a lifetime.

This class is perfect for those who are beginners, for those who are looking for a slower paced class, or for those with prior acting experience who need a technique brush-up.

This is not a sit in your seat lecture! Students are up on their feet working in every class in a supportive environment that allows them to really take risks and fly.

Class size is kept small so that participants have time to be up on their feet working, making mistakes, learning from their mistakes and growing into ever more powerful actors.

DAY: Tuesdays

TIME: 6-10 PM

DATES: February 4-April 8 (a total of 10 classes)

LOCATION: NYC Studio TBA

FEE: $495, payable in 2 installments

Scene Study & Cold Reading Technique

Scene Study & Cold Reading Technique is 10-week class created specifically for the actor who wants to deeply invigorate and rev up their scene work capacity with an eye toward booking more acting work.

By pairing scene study along with cold readings, students will have the opportunity to both ground their scene work skills and then take them even further by tying them to the quick work that's often required at an audition.

This is a real acting workout. Each week, actors will be up on their feet further developing their craft and adding new skills to their acting tool bag -- this is not a sit-in-your seat lecture.

Throughout the 10-week course, actors will take their scene work skills and apply them to cold reading in the quick manner of the audition process.

The class atmosphere is supportive and is the perfect environment to take risks in order to grow beyond limitations.

Throughout the 10-week course, actors will take their scene work skills and apply them to cold reading in the quick manner of the audition process.

Students will learn:
  •  4 Key Shortcuts to a Great Cold Reading
  •  How to Take Control of the Audition Room
  • The Most Important Cold Reading Preparation Strategies

This class is designed for students with prior acting experience. It would not be appropriate for actors at a beginning level or those who have no prior acting experience.

DAY: Thursdays

TIME: 6-10 PM

DATES: February 6-April 10 (a total of 10 classes)

LOCATION: NYC Studio TBA

FEE: $495, payable in 2 installments

Created in 2011-but dreamed about for a long time-the aim of this workshop is to bring acting training to teens who might not otherwise have the opportunity to study professionally.

Somewhere Along The Line, Warm-Ups Got A Bad Rap

Oh, relax now! I don't mean the requisite warm-ups for athletes or musicians. Heavens no! And I'm not talking about the crucial warm-ups that dancers or singers must do to be at their best. Certainly not! If you fall within any one of these categories, feel free to warm up to your heart's content.

The warm-ups with the bad rap belong solely to actors.

Ballerinas do their pli's, pianists play their scales and actors have a cigarette and a cup of coffee. Okay, that might be a bit dramatic (or extremely truthful), but sometimes our first inclination when we see an actor warming up is to assume he or she is an amateur...
