They say that March comes in like a lion and leaves like a lamb.  I say it's cold until June.

But that doesn't mean that things aren't heating up here at Art & Soul Acting.

So much going on!  Acting class is in session and the first Book Club for Actors meeting of 2014 will kick off next week as we delve into the wiley work of Caryl Churchill - - details below.

I am also really looking forward to this Saturday, March 8th, when I will be a presenter at Theater Resources Unlimited's (TRU) annual Meet The Coaches event.  If you are looking for a coach, this event is for you. Details are below.

In preparation of Saturday's TRU event, I've posted below four juicy Book That Job Blog postings on how you can up the quality of your auditioning.  Don't miss these!

Finally, save the date: Sunday, April 26 -- Art & Soul Acting will be a part of Actors Pro Expo.  Details about this actors' convention/networking event are below.  It is sure to be a great day to connect with fellow actors, attend industry seminars and discover more tools that can get you where you want to go as an actor.  Plus, stop by and see me! (Oh, and did I mention that it's FREE?)

OK...get out there, actor, and please do stay clear of that March lion!

TRU: Meet The Coaches
I am thrilled to have been chosen as a presenter in the acting coach category at Theater Resources Unlimited's (TRU) upcoming Meet The Coaches event! Please join us.

TRU seeks to connect actors with coaches.  Come on out and meet myself and several other acting and vocal coaches at this one-of-a-kind event.

Actors: your coach is waiting!

At TRU we firmly believe that even the most experienced actor needs an outside eye to help shape an effective audition piece.

Trust us - the room can tell who has been coached and who hasn't. It makes a huge difference. That's why we offer this annual opportunity for you to meet a lineup of recommended coaches who want nothing more than to make you shine!

How do you know if you want to work with someone? Sure, you can read about them, or ask a friend for a reco; but we think it's even better to meet someone in person and "get the vibe".

Led this year by vocal/music coach NATALIE WILSON, we will introduce you to acting coaches GILLIEN GOLL, BOB LUKE, RHONDA MUSAK, ROGER HENDRICKS SIMON, ROSALYN COLEMAN WILLIAMS; vocal coaches LISA HOGAN, ALISON HOLMAN, DAN MANJOVI and KIM STERN; plus Alexander Technique coach KAREN BRAGA.

Each will give a 4 minute presentation, and afterwards we will have a catered reception at which you can meet each coach one-on-one.

Not sure if your headshot is working for you? Come talk to headshot photographers Junenoire Mitchell and Nadia Saburov of STUDIO 7 PHOTOGRAPHY!

What's Going on with Acting Class?
GrowFor an actor, acting class is the #1 laboratory for growth and exploration.  It is the place to take risks...a safe harbor where it's okay to let go of perfection in lieu of stretching and expanding beyond limitations.

Class is currently in session...stay tuned for upcoming class info and dates.

Core Acting Technique

Core Acting Technique is a dynamic, structured 10-week class designed to fortify and deepen the skills that go into brilliant acting while stretching students as artists and as human beings.

Acting exercises, take home assignments for in-class work and scene study make up the bulk of each class. This powerful classroom work allows students to grow at a rapid pace while creating an acting foundation that will serve for a lifetime.

This class is perfect for those who are beginners, for those who are looking for a slower paced class, or for those with prior acting experience who need a technique brush-up.

This is not a sit in your seat lecture! Students are up on their feet working in every class in a supportive environment that allows them to really take risks and fly.

Class size is kept small so that participants have time to be up on their feet working, making mistakes, learning from their mistakes and growing into ever more powerful actors.

DAY: Tuesdays

TIME: 6-10 PM

DATES: February 4-April 8 (a total of 10 classes)

LOCATION: NYC Studio TBA

FEE: $495, payable in 2 installments

Scene Study & Cold Reading Technique

Scene Study & Cold Reading Technique is 10-week class created specifically for the actor who wants to deeply invigorate and rev up their scene work capacity with an eye toward booking more acting work.

By pairing scene study along with cold readings, students will have the opportunity to both ground their scene work skills and then take them even further by tying them to the quick work that's often required at an audition.

This is a real acting workout. Each week, actors will be up on their feet further developing their craft and adding new skills to their acting tool bag -- this is not a sit-in-your seat lecture.

Throughout the 10-week course, actors will take their scene work skills and apply them to cold reading in the quick manner of the audition process.

The class atmosphere is supportive and is the perfect environment to take risks in order to grow beyond limitations.

Throughout the 10-week course, actors will take their scene work skills and apply them to cold reading in the quick manner of the audition process.

Students will learn:
  •  4 Key Shortcuts to a Great Cold Reading
  •  How to Take Control of the Audition Room
  • The Most Important Cold Reading Preparation Strategies

This class is designed for students with prior acting experience. It would not be appropriate for actors at a beginning level or those who have no prior acting experience.

DAY: Thursdays

TIME: 6-10 PM

DATES: February 6-April 10 (a total of 10 classes)

LOCATION: NYC Studio TBA

FEE: $495, payable in 2 installments

Summer Acting Intensive for Teens
Art & Soul Acting travels! The Summer Acting Intensive for Teens is a one-of-a-kind traveling professional acting workshop. Teens spend a week training like the pros!

Created in 2011-but dreamed about for a long time-the aim of this workshop is to bring acting training to teens who might not otherwise have the opportunity to study professionally.

The group activities made me feel as one with my fellow actors in the workshop, and I believe the trusting bond was carried on from the stage to everyday life. I made friends, improvements, and most importantly memories to last a lifetime.

Choosing Monologues That Will Set Your Auditions on Fire

macro-sparkler.jpg

Actors know that having a great set of audition monologues is an absolute must. But it's that word "great" that can often put an actor into the throes of agony. You read the audition notices, you see what it is that the auditioners are looking for, and with a plummeting heart you realize that you have nothing suitable to audition for a role for which you are perfect...

The Key to a Great Monologue Relationship,
The Start of a Love Affair

cupid-heart-icon.jpg

I started out writing this week's article by focusing on where exactly an actor can find really great monologues. But then I realize that there's a lot to be said about what actually makes a monologue great. And not only great in general, but specifically great for the actor who is doing the piece...

How to Find Great Audition Monologues

graphic-book-adventure.jpg

It's the search that actors never seem to end: the quest to find great, amazingly perfect, stunning, one-of-a-kind, out-of-this-world audition monologues. And not only that, but pieces that book the job...every time...

The Audition Mindset That Will Change Your Life

Mindset

Actors have been told a thousand times over that they must have confidence when they walk into an audition room. That's great! Yes!! It is well agreed that that must be so. However, that's usually where the conversation ends, leaving actors hanging and wondering exactly what it means and how to go about creating this mystical and magical dream realm called "confidence..."
