Regular self breast exam is important! Paying attention to breast health is something women of all ages should do. These folks have taken a new approach to encourage women to check their breasts. It is based on marketing research with women. They have come up with a great new app that you may find helpful. A patient of mine brought this to my attention this week and I think it is hilarious!
funny breast exam app
If you enjoyed that - these men can help remind you to do monthly self breast exams and help you to reduce breast cancer risk:

Keep taking vitamin D. Research shows that if we can get our Vitamin D levels up to at least 52--we can reduce our risk of breast cancer by 50%! Make sure your daughters are taking Vitamin D. The sooner we start, the better!
Vitamin D rocks!

Neurotrans. . .what?
| |
Neurotransmitters have a very important role in allowing the body to work properly and sustain good mental and physical health. They help the brain balance the highs and lows of feelings, and manage the hormonal signals that are sent to other organs in the body.
When neurotransmitters are able to work properly concentration and focus is good, we feel more directed, motivated, and alive. Conversely, if neurotransmitter levels are unbalanced these energizing and motivating signals are absent and we feel more stressed, sluggish, and out-of-control. As an alternative to Prozac and other anti-depressants, amino acids and other Nutracueticals are used to bring the neurotransmitters back into balance. A simple urine test can determine your levels.
I am now offering Neurotransmitter testing and treatment.

A glacier lily willfully breaks through to bring us springtime splender.
Greetings!
Spring is such a great time to do much needed house work and get the cob webs out! The dust in the corners seems to get imbedded and requires a little extra effort to remove after months of stew, soup, and root vegetables. The nooks and crannies of your bodies do the same thing. Our bodies are great at storage in the winter. Storing fat for a rainy day! Along with the fat storage comes storage of toxins and waste.
Our bodies' natural detoxification process gets slow and bogged down and may need a little boost. Interestingly, according to Ann Louise Gittleman, CNS, PhD: People benefit from detoxification by experiencing increased energy and getting better sleep, better stamina, better mental acuity, stronger nails , glowing skin, and more lustrous hair. Individuals are also more likely to make lifestyle changes in the spring because the weather is nice and we are more likely to go outside and exercise-the body doesn't contract like it does in the winter to protect itself from the cold. It wants to expand now and take in the warmth of spring.
Who needs to detoxify this spring? All of us! I recently discovered "The Virgin Diet by JJ Virgin. Her diet consists of eliminating the seven least tolerated foods. She proposes that you can lose seven pounds in seven days by eliminating these seven foods. The foods include: Peanuts, sugar and artificial sweeteners, dairy, gluten, eggs, soy, and corn. For more information on a great way to kick start detoxifying your system and losing some weight: 7-7-7 Detox
Cleaning up your diet is the first step in detoxification. Liver support supplements can be helpful to boost your body's detoxification system. N-Acetyl-Cysteine is helpful with detoxification. This amino acid is a precursor to glutathione-the main detoxifying enzyme in our bodies. Boost your glutathione by exercising regularly and eating plenty of onions, garlic, and cruciferous vegetables.
How do you know if you have toxins in your cells? Glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT) a liver function enzyme, has been shown to act as a bio-marker for toxic load.*
Not everything about GGT and how it represents abnormal function is fully known. However, research suggest that GGT is a marker of oxidative stress in the liver. GGT has been shown to be inversely related to concentrations of antioxidants in the blood in a very large study, i.e. GGT was increased when antioxidants were decreased. If the body is under oxidative stress, it makes sense that it would try to compensate by increasing its antioxidant defenses; this increase may be represented by higher GGT levels in the blood.
Because the liver is so important in regulating blood sugar by sensing blood sugar levels and responding by either increasing or decreasing its production of sugar, it stands to reason that oxidative stress in the liver may impact this regulation of blood sugar. In fact, studies have shown that the higher the GGT level-the higher the risk for type II diabetes. In general, the GGT normal range is between 10-50. If your GGT is greater than 10 you are showing signs of toxic load or oxidative stress. For more information click here.
Full bloom is a beautiful thing.
So what can you do right now? Get the chemicals out of your diet! If you have not already done so-get out the high fructose corn syrup, artificial sweeteners, food additives, food dyes, flavorings, MSG, modified food starch, yeast extracts, and anything else that you are not absolutely sure what it is and where it came from! Avoid the dirty dozen--for more information on these: www.foodnews.org
Exercise and drink plenty of clean water- NOT out of plastic bottles! Take control of what goes into your mouth! Your life may depend on it!
Blessings for a beautiful Spring!

Men's Health Corner
| |
While the life-expectancy gap between men and women has decreased, it's no secret that men still need to pay more attention to their bodies. Several things work against men. They tend to smoke and drink more than women. They don't seek medical help as often as women. Some men define themselves by their work, which can add to stress.
Are you feeling your best?
Male Hormone Imbalance can cause a multitude of symptoms and problems for men as they age. The testes produce nearly 95% of all male testosterone. The balance is supplied by the adrenal glands. They also produce small amounts of estrogen. The brain produces the pituitary hormones follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) which trigger hormone production from the testes. As a man gets older, testosterone levels fall and estrogen levels tend to rise. Lower testosterone levels may affect bone density, muscle strength, body composition and sex drive. The imbalance that occurs when testosterone is low in relation to estrogen may also contribute to prostate problems.
Symtoms of
Male Hormone Imbalance:
-Bone loss
-Decreased mental clarity
-Decreased muscle strength
-Decreased stamina
-Decreades urine flow
-Depression
-Erectile dysfunction
-Hot flashes
-Increased abdominal fat
-Increased urge to urinate
-Irritability
-Low sex drive
-Mood swings
-Night sweats
-Poor concentration
-Sleep disturbances
