Sermon of the Week

Title:  What Did Jesus Do?

Theme: How do we defeat Satan? By following Jesus' example. First Sunday in Lent

Object: A WWJD bracelet or something similar. (If you don't have one, you could just make a sign with WWJD on it and ask the children if they know what it means. Then, explain about the bracelet fad.)

Scripture: Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the desert, where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. Luke 4:1-2 NIV

How many of you have ever seen a bracelet like this one? It is a WWJD bracelet. Can any of you tell me what the letters WWJD mean? The letters WWJD stand for "What Would Jesus Do?" WWJD bracelets were very popular a few years ago and many people were wearing them. When a person was tempted to do something wrong, the bracelet was supposed to remind them to stop and ask, "What would Jesus do?"

I must say, I have seen some people doing some very naughty things while wearing their WWJD bracelets!  You know, the most important thing is not what I THINK Jesus would do -- the most important thing is -- WHAT DID JESUS DO? If you and I want to know what we should do when the devil tempts us, we should read our Bible and do what Jesus did when the devil tempted him.

Hey! Wait a minute, does that mean that Jesus was tempted by the devil just as we are? Yes he was. The Bible tells us that one time Jesus was led by the Holy Spirit into the desert where he was tempted by the devil for forty days. Do you know what Jesus did when the devil tempted him? He answered him with Scripture!

Jesus had not had anything to eat for forty days. Satan knew he was hungry, so he said to him, "If you are really the Son of God, turn these stones into bread."

Jesus could have easily done what Satan suggested, but he didn't. Instead, he answered, "It is written, 'Man does not live by bread alone.'"

Then the devil took Jesus up to a high place and showed him the worldly kingdoms below. He said, "All of this belongs to me. If you will bow down and worship me, I will give it to you."

Jesus answered, "It is written, 'Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.'"

Next, the devil took Jesus to Jerusalem and led him up to the highest point on the temple. He said to Jesus, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here. God will send his angels to rescue you."

Again, Jesus quoted the Scripture, "'Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'"

Do you know what the devil did? He gave up! He said, "I'll come back and try another day."

The next time the devil tempts you to do something wrong, look in the Bible and see what the Bible says. Then...Do What Jesus Did...answer Satan with Scripture!

Dear Father, help us to learn what the Bible teaches us to do so that when the devil tempts us, we can do what Jesus did...answer him with Scripture. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
