January 28, 2013

The Elementary Christian Council is organizing the "Souper Bowl of Caring" food drive for the week of  Jan. 28 - Feb. 1. Students are asked to bring non-perishable food items to school in order to fill up the shelves in the MANNA House food bank that services the needy in our area.

Food items may be dropped off in the red basket near the Welcome Desk or carried to the homeroom classes. Thanks in advance for helping us reach out to help others in our community!

Congratulations to NCS 4th grader Amaya Harrell! Amaya won the Elementary Spelling Bee and advanced to challenge NCS 8th grader, Colby Buckhanan, for the NCS Spelling Bee title. Amaya advances to the Scripps District Spelling Bee to be held in February. Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo Art Winners
Every year NCS elementary students participate in the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo's art contest. Our students performed very well, bringing home 3 blue ribbons, 6 red ribbons and 3 white ribbons. Click for individual results.

Excellence Continues in NCS Academics

Visual Arts
High School art students have participated in the Savannah College of Art and Design Challenges, designed and painted the sets for the fall musical, and submitted drawings for the Rodeo on-site drawing contest. The National Art Honor Society has been working on painting ceiling tiles for building Seven, and the three-dimensional design students have worked on creating models of the school to display on Google earth. The interest of students help guide all projects.

Choir

Both the elementary and the secondary choir participate in "Goodwill" tours throughout the community as various times of the year but particularly Christmas. Hundreds of community members have had an opportunity to hear the Northland Choir and appreciate their uplifting message of joy and hope.

The Elementary Honor Choir won the Aldine I.S.D. Children's Choir Festival and was given the Most Outstanding Choral Performance Award for 4th and 5th grade choir for a second year in a row. They also participated in the Trills and Thrills Festival held at Deady Middle School in conjunction with Splashtown and were awarded a Superior Rating earning 98 out of 100 possible points.

The Elementary Honor choir will be singing the National Anthem at the Houston Astros game on Sunday, April 7th. This is quite an accomplishment to be chosen out of the many, many choirs vying for the honor! Go Cougars!

Photography
Digital Photography has 47 students this year. In November, the class took a field trip to record directed observations on site. Several groups went into the tunnels under the streets. Everyone took pictures of architecture, trains and street life. Many of those images were displayed at the Christmas concert and art show. There were 235 students who participated in the Christmas concert, and the families of those students viewed artwork and photography from middle school and high school artists. Pictured below (from left to right) are works from Caitlyn Vazquez, Elizabeth Mitten and Noah Fouts.

Robotics

Northland's Robotics Program helps prepare students for tournaments and competitions leading to excellence in achievement for themselves and their school. Students work together in teams during competition to solve the prescribed problems together. NCS is fortunate to have a Robotics Program that begins in elementary school and continues through middle and senior high school. A middle school team won the award for "Teamwork" and progressed to the Regional Competition. At Regional competition, the team finished in the top four teams. NCS sponsored a qualifying round for the Southwest Texas division of "FIRST Technology Challenge" robotics competition in January. The NCS high school team is pictured above and our middle school teams are pictured below.

Debate

The NCS Debate team has had a stellar year. The first semester was filled with SEVEN Sweepstakes trophies, which means the team placed in the top three teams at the tournament. In addition, debate had ten qualifications to the Texas Forensics Association State Tournament, and many students on the road to qualifying for state. On the national level, the debate program has continued to establish itself as one that continuously succeeds even when competing against top schools; Ms. Shania Hunt has already completed her qualification to the Tournament of Champions, a tournament that many would deem as the most prestigious in the country. The eighth grade team won first place in their tournament against private and public schools around the area. Our high school team is pictured above.

January is School Board Recognition Month
Kevin Roberts, NCS Board of Trustees Chairman, at the State of the School Address earlier this month.

In Texas, January marks the month for School Board Recognition - a great time to focus on the crucial role a board of trustees plays in our community and the life of our school. As parents, faculty and staff, we appreciate the Board's dedication and hard work. These extraordinary people voluntarily support the Superintendent of Northland in ensuring a high quality of education for our students. Their actions and decisions affect the present and future lives of our children. Their support is invaluable.

Even though showing appreciation should be a year-round process, taking advantage of the designated School Board Recognition Month in January ensures that these important people receive some of the thanks they deserve. The Board of Trustees for Northland are: Mrs. Nancy Cook, Mr. Dan Greer, Mr. Jeff Ingram, Mr. Rodney Leis, Dr. Guy Lewis, Mr. Brian Louden, Mr. Mark Maddox, Mr. Eddie Martin, Mr. Greg Mathews, Mrs. Ada Petro, Mrs. Kim Pope, and Board Chairperson, Mr. Kevin Roberts.

These individuals meet monthly representing your interests and the interests of all our students. They seek God's guidance and His will in continually moving Northland Christian School forward year after year. Over the years, the commitment of many trustees has seen Northland grow and develop holding true to the Christian principles upon which the school was founded in 1974.

State of the School Address
If you were unable to attend one of the recent "State of the School" meetings, it's not too late to hear the news thanks to Jeff Johnson, Northland's Visual Arts and Broadcast Video teacher, who videotaped the event.
