WCMS Issues Action Alert on SB 629 - Take Action to Protect Your Negotiating Power
The bill states an out-of-network provider's total payment for care or for emergency services is reasonable if it is equal to the benchmark amount. An out-of-network provider would be required to send a bill to the insured individual who is responsible for paying in-network cost sharing, but the patient would have no legal obligation to pay the remaining balance when the benchmark applies.

Opioids to Heroin to Hepatitis C in Western NC
As North Carolina officials are cracking down on opioid prescribing, some medical professionals weren't surprised by the concurrent increase in IV drug use and the diseases that come along with it, such as HIV and hepatitis C.

In Madison County, a rural stretch of mountains northwest of Asheville, the county health director and local sheriff are teaming up to tackle these issues.

Legislative Update: As Crossover Looms Here Are Several Key Bills To Watch
The North Carolina Medical Society's (NCMS) advocacy team will be spending most of their waking hours at the General Assembly this coming week, as the April 27 crossover deadline looms. 'Crossover' means any bills that have not passed either the House or Senate by next Thursday will not proceed, or 'crossover', to the other chamber for further consideration. This week legislators are rushing to get their bills through the committee process and to the floor for a vote before the deadline.

Medicaid Expansion Inches Forward with New Proposal
RALEIGH - Sponsors of new legislation that would increase Medicaid eligibility for about 375,000 low-income North Carolinians say their plan is a new way forward on a complicated and often politically charged issue.

North Carolina is one of 19 states that has not expanded Medicaid eligibility under the Affordable Care Act. After recent attempts to repeal the ACA faltered, many of those states are taking another look at Medicaid expansion.
