Message from WCMS President Dr. Samantha Read-Smith
Dear Colleagues,

Behind the scenes at WCMS, we've been busy rolling out our 2016 Strategic Plan (the strategy is based on interview data from our membership and community partners). It's going to be a meaningful year with a jam-packed agenda. WCMS is tackling head-on one of the most pressing issues facing physicians: burnout.

Addressing physician burnout is at the top of the agenda for WCMS this year because national data and direct feedback from our membership demonstrate a critical need. According to the Mayo Clinic, "burnout and satisfaction with work-life balance in US physicians worsened from 2011 to 2014. More than half of US physicians are now experiencing professional burnout."More than half of US physicians are now experiencing professional burnout."

LOCAL NEWS

Physicians' Voice in the News
WCMS is proud to announce another high quality addition to the series of "The Physicians' Voice," a series of media presentations for the general public that showcase physicians' world-class medical expertise and focus on patient/community health.

Here's a recent article from WCMS member Dr. Gentry Caton, "Colon Cancer is Preventable and Beatable."

Excerpt: "Colon cancer is the third most common cause of cancer death among men and women in the United States, but most cases can be prevented. Unfortunately, only 60 percent of adults get their screening colonoscopy as recommended. As a colorectal surgeon, I see firsthand every day the needless suffering of patients who have waited too long to discover they have this disease - and the benefits to patients who have been screened early and treated for it."

BCDH Health Alert: Influenza Activity Increasing in WNC
Influenza activity increased in NC during the last half of February. Flu is now widespread across the state.
* Per Dr. David Buhner, Public Health Epidemiologist for Mission, WNC is clearly in the early stages of the yearly epidemic of influenza. It is too early to know how bad this year's epidemic will be.
* As of 2/27/16, there have been 5 flu-associated deaths in NC this season. (See graph below for ages.)
o None of these have been in Buncombe County residents.
* Influenza surveillance data for North Carolina are updated weekly at flu.nc.gov.

HIMSS16: Arien Malec Warns MACRA Preparation Needs to Begin Now
Legislative language is confusing; that's no secret. Sometimes, legislative language is purposefully written in a convexing vernacular. If something is confusing, a natural reaction is to zone out.

While the Medicare Access & CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015 (MACRA) is a bit confusing and details are yet to be determined (CMS Acting Administrator Andy Slavitt at HIMSS16 noted CMS is "months away" from a MACRA proposed rule), that does not mean preperation can't begin now.
