WCMS President's Message
"Be at the table, not on the menu"
Gus Vickery, MD, WCMS President

The reality of medicine is that often Physicians do not determine how they practice medicine, legislators and administrators do.  The old saying, "If you're not at the table, you're on the menu" rings true more than ever.  Insurance companies, trial lawyers, and hospital administrators participate in the political process in large numbers. Physicians typically do not. WCMS-in collaboration with NCMS-- is working hard to change this because if physicians do not participate in influencing policy decisions, whose information do you think the legislators will use to make their decisions? As Dr. Dave Pucci recently noted after visiting with legislators on White Coat Wednesday, "I was very pleased at how receptive the legislators were during our discussions.  Even if we didn't necessarily agree they were willing to discuss their viewpoint and hear ours.  What was also very evident is that they need our guidance."

Preventing Heart Attacks and Strokes in our Community
(submitted by MAHEC)

In an effort to identify and improve care for people who have not previously recognized that they are at risk for heart disease and stroke, MAHEC will be conducting free cholesterol and blood pressure checks for 40-75 year olds residing in zip code 28804 (Woodfin and environs) from now until March 2015, and then in zip code 28715 (Enka Candler and environs) next April - December 2015.

Primary care physicians please note: if we see your patient, we will encourage them to follow up with you - and, with their permission, fax you results of their screening.  People without a primary care provider will be invited to seek care at ABCCM or become a MAHEC patient.   MAHEC received funding from The Duke Endowment to offer this service and to redesign their primary care services to better manage patients' risk factors; our goal is to replicate the successes of New Ulm, MN screening and Kaiser Permanente Northern California hypertension management.  For more information about the community screenings, contact MAHEC screening nurse Jane Morrow at 257-4471.

STATE NEWS

NC Medicaid Overhaul that Shifts Cost Risk to Medical Providers Gets Unanimous House Approval
Important Legislative Alert: Take Action Now
WCMS is forwarding the urgent news alert below on behalf of NCMS.  We want to insure that physicians across Western North Carolina speak up loud and clear about their desire to see the future of Medicaid reform in the hands of physicians instead of private, out-of-state companies.  Please take a moment and contact your Senator today!

Ask your Senator to support HB 1181,
North Carolina Medicaid Modernization

On July 2, the NC House of Representatives unanimously passed HB 1181, North Carolina Medicaid Modernization. This bill proposes implementing a provider-led Medicaid reform delivery system that builds upon the state's existing primary care medical home model. We now need for your Senator to support this bill and abandon the previous proposals for a Medicaid HMO system.

Contact your Senator today and ask for support of HB 1181 so that physicians can lead the transition to a value-driven payment and delivery model for Medicaid.

There was a Time When Doctors were Doctors
"There was a time when doctors were doctors. There was a time when young men and women sacrificed the best years of their youth, learning to treat patients and conquer diseases, not to become typists, paper pushers, data-entry clerks, or to have hospitals, insurance companies, and the federal government dictate to us how to practice medicine."
