Secretary of DHHS Dr. Aldona Wos visits Asheville to talk about Medicaid Reform

On April 22, 2013 Secretary Wos presented to a 250+ standing room only crowd at MAHEC her vision of a new "framework" for overhauling Medicaid. The centerpiece of this proposal is the creation of three (or more) state-wide Comprehensive Care Entities that will manage patient care. More information can be found at www.NCDHHS.gov/Medicaidreform. Several pointed questions were asked by physicians:

  1. What will be the future of CCNC moving forward? How will it be integrated into this new framework?
  2. Historically our experience with MCOs is that they manage costs by either decreasing eligibility, decreasing services, and/or decreasing provider reimbursement. How will your plan be different in order to achieve the goal of cost containment?
  3. Explain how establishing 3 CCE's fosters competition, and how will you prevent one company from putting other companies out of business?

Many of these questions seemed to go unanswered. WCMS looks forward to hearing from those of you who attended for your feedback and to develop further questions we can forward to DHHS. If you have comments or questions, contact Miriam@mywcms.org.

New--WNC Physician Leadership Group

On April 15, 2013, WNC Health Network held its first WNC Physician Leadership Committee in collaboration with WCMS. The group was comprised of CMOs and COSs from across the region. Topics for discussion included recruitment and retention of physicians and the challenges related to transfers between hospitals.  The group agreed that it is critical that physician leadership get involved with problem-solving when such issues arise. This group will meet every two months. Bob Kiskaddon, MD, CMO at Pardee Hospital, agreed to serve as chair for 2013.

New WCMS affinity group launched: Early Career Physicians' Section

The Early Career Physicians' Section of the WCMS is our newest physician-led affinity group focusing on physicians within their first eight (8) years of professional practice after residency and fellowship training. The ECPS will consist of social and/or informational events giving physicians who are early in their career-many new to our region-an opportunity to meet, network, and lend support as they transition into practice. Ananda Vieages, MD, WCMS Board Member and 2011 MAHEC graduate, affiliated with Family Medicine of Glenwood will be helping to spearhead the ECP Section. First gathering is slated for May 16th at Highland Brewing Company at 6:00pm.

Attention Primary Care Physicians of Henderson and Buncombe Counties-Healthy IDEAS is coming your way.

MAHEC has partnered with Land-of- Sky Regional Council to support replication of an evidence-based program called Healthy IDEAS to improve identification and treatment of depression in older adults receiving care management services from the Council on Aging of Buncombe County, the Council on Aging for Henderson County, and the Henderson County Social Services.

Primary care doctors in Buncombe and Henderson Counties: starting in May you might receive communication from the Council on Aging of Buncombe County, the Council on Aging for Henderson County, and the Henderson County Social Services that one of your patients received a score of 5 or more on the PHQ9, a depression screening tool (a score of 5-9 suggests minor depression and a score of 10 or more suggests major depression). You should schedule an office visit to review this and decide if your patient needs specific treatment for depression.
