Dear Members, Delegates and Friends:

As we turn the page on a new calendar year, the Coalition strives to provide relevant opportunities for its members and to address current issues or needs for our members. Take a look at a few of our "resolutions" for the new year:
2015 Resolutions for the Coalition of Women's Initiatives in Law
1. Launch a 6-part professional development series for
in-house attorneys called "In-House to Power-House."
(The kick-off session was an overwhelming success with approximately 115 women in attendance on January 14.)
2. Inspire, educate and promote women law students at the 6 Chicago area law schools. (Hold March 5 on your calendar for our annual law student event to be held at Chicago Kent this year.)
3. Grow our organization to reach more than 100 member law firms and companies. (Membership increases daily. Please tell your friends and colleagues to spread the word!)
4. Host cutting edge programs that address topics of interest for women in the legal profession. (Take a look at the program invitations already in this newsletter.)
5. Continue to nominate and promote women for recognition. (Congratulations to all of the women from Coalition member firms named to SuperLawyers!)
6. Inspire, promote, collaborate and network to advance women in the practice of law.
We welcome all opportunities or ideas to keep our organization fresh and relevant to our members and to support each of your resolutions for the coming year.

Book Club Event (Rescheduled):
Striving to Thrive in the Legal Profession
Please join the Associates Committee for a discussion of Arianna Huffington'sbook Thrive: The Third Metric to Redefining Success and Creating a Life of Well-Being, Wisdom, and Wonder. In Thrive, Huffington argues that we must redefine what it means to be successful in today's world. According to Huffington, pursuit of the traditional metrics of success-money and power-has led to unhappiness, stress, and burn-out. Huffington argues that we need a third metric for defining success, which includes well-being, wisdom, wonder, and giving.
Three distinguished attorneys will lead a discussion of the book and its applicability to women in the legal profession. The discussion leaders will talk about what it means to be successful in the legal field and how women can pursue a successful legal career in a manner that embraces the third metric.
Discussion Leaders
Jane Pigott, Managing Director, R3 Group LLC
Susan Lichtenstein, Senior Vice President of Corporate Affairs and Chief Legal Officer, Hill-Rom Holdings, Inc.
Amy Manning,Managing Partner of the Chicago office, McGuireWoods LLP
NOTE: Attendees do not need to read Huffington's book to participate and benefit from the the discussion. The Committee will circulate a list of key concepts and discussion topics prior to the event for those who do not have time to read the book.
February 11, 2015

Attorneys In Transition
Panel Presentation On Returnships
The On-Ramp Fellowship was launched one year ago to provide women lawyers re-entering the profession one year paid positions at top law firms. A year later, participation has quadrupled. Come listen to a panel of thought leaders on why returnships are a win-win for employers and returning professionals. They will provide historical data on returnships in several industries as well as information on training available for returnees in the legal profession offered by law schools and bar associations. Real life experiences, both from the law firm and the returnee, will spotlight how returnships work in practice, how they help provide on-ramps and how they benefit the participating firms.
The program will also feature a "text your question" format that allows attendees the opportunity to text questions in real time, throughout the panel discussion.

Coalition Member Spotlight - Megan Mathias
Megan Mathias is an attorney serving the business needs of her clients which include start-ups, family businesses and Fortune 500 companies. Megan founded her law firm, Lopp Mathias Law Group, on a concept of being the ultimate resource for her clients and providing sophisticated corporate and litigation representation with flexible billing practices.
What do you enjoy most about the practice of law? When I was a new attorney, I enjoyed the steep learning curve and the adversarial nature of the work. I have evolved and while I still enjoy litigation, I now focus on helping my clients meet their goals for success. I love working with start-ups and watching them navigate the minefield of issues while growing at sometimes a light speed pace. I especially like to assist women and minority business owners with their unique issues and giving back to the community that helped me attain my own personal goals.
Why did you get involved in the Coalition? I seek out talented, motivated and creative women in my personal and professional life. I had served on boards of other female based organizations and was looking for a place where I could learn professional development skills and expand my network in Chicago. What I found was so much more than that. The Coalition has given me friendships and people who I can confide in during times of transition and growth. It has become one of my favorite organizations and something I intend on staying involved with for a very long time.
What are your outside interests? I have two beautiful children and our family is very active in sports. My 9 month old daughter, Amelia, loves spending time with her brother. My 10 year old son, Matteo, grew up coming to the boxing gym with me in the morning before school. He is now an accomplished Brazilian jiu jitsu student and we work out together sometimes! I hope I have changed his opinion of women by showing him that we do not all fit the same mold and women can box too! I also love to dance salsa and bachata.
What is one piece of advice that you want to share with other women lawyers? Never eat alone. Spend every second of free time networking and expanding the circle within which you live and work. Opportunities arise from what you would think would be the most uninteresting meetings sometimes.
