Dear Members, Delegates and Friends:

I look forward to seeing you at our Fifth Annual Leadership Forum on November 18, 2014.  In addition to presenting the Coalition awards, we will be welcoming Pamela Ryckman, author of Stiletto Network-Inside the Women's Power Circles that are Changing the Face of Business, to this signature event. Shia Kappos, Columnist with Crain's Chicago Business, will serve as moderator.  (Full details for the event are set forth in the invitation below. )  While our organization itself is too large to qualify as a "stiletto network," the Coalition truly is a network of women banding together to advance other women in the profession.  The Coalition has helped many female attorneys achieve recognition, join boards, develop leadership and business skills and even obtain employment.  I hope you each took the opportunity last week to submit your information for consideration for the Best Lawyers nominations.

As we approach Thanksgiving, I would also like to thank all of our members, delegates, speakers and leaders for the time, energy and enthusiasm shared with the Coalition.  At our very first Leadership Forum, we recognized what a unique organization we had built.  Four years later, we have more than doubled in size and have expanded our organization in a way that we can now serve as a force of change.  The Chicago Daily Law Bulletin ran a profile on me last week where they mentioned the desire to move our efforts beyond the "choir" of women lawyers.  Change can be made on many fronts, but as our choir grows, our voice also gets louder.  Keep offering your suggestions, your time and your commitment, and we will band together to have even more with which to be thankful in the next 5 years.

Very truly yours,

Marcia Owens

Coalition Member Spotlight
Katherine Minarik

Katherine Minarik is a partner at Bartlit Beck Herman Palenchar & Scott LLP. She also serves as Vice President of the Coalition and Co-Chair of the Coalition's Career Development Committee. Katherine's practice focuses on intellectual property litigation and major commercial disputes, and she was recently named one of the Law Bulletin's 2014 Illinois 40 Under Forty Attorneys to Watch.

Why did you enter the practice of law?

I did not head straight to law school after   graduating college. I got a masters degree, worked as a consultant for McKinsey & Company, and then worked for nonprofit organizations and a political campaign. As I was on that path, I tried to take stock of what I liked or disliked about different jobs and experiences. I loved working with smart people, being challenged, thinking on my feet, writing, solving problems, and doing work that could have a lasting impact. The law seemed like a natural step for me after I put those pieces together.

Why did you get involved in the Coalition?  Bottom line, there are not enough women at the top of heap when it comes to the law. This is true for law firms, corporations, judicial appointments, law professorships - all areas of the law. I want to be a part of changing this, and I want to connect with other women lawyers like me.

What are your outside interests?  I am a mom of an 18-month-old, so that takes up quite a bit of my time in a great way. I love reading and I'm a member of a six-year-old (and counting) book club. We are very proud to have lasted this long. I'm a big sports fan. Right now I'm especially loving the U.S. Women's National Team (soccer) who are headed to the World Cup next summer and the Chicago Blackhawks. I'm also interested in politics and refuse to be a cynic about it.

What is one piece of advice that you would share with other women lawyers? Be yourself and practice law in a way that is true to your values. Sincerity can carry you through most tricky situations better than any other skill. This job is demanding enough without having to sacrifice who you are.
