Thanks Giving and Receiving

We scattered a second urn of Pete's ashes and rose petals to put him to rest on a rocky ocean shelf just outside the beachfront house we've stayed in at Mokuleia every Thanksgiving for years with close friends and family. Vinnie, Pete's grandnephew was like an alter-boy, making sure each rose petal made it to the ocean with Uncle Pete.

Brenner, whose ocean skills helped to save Pete during the almost-fatal "save-the-kayakers" incident in 2012, did his part in memory of Pete, catching sand crabs at twilight, and started a fire in the barbecue pit. He also found a bottle with papers in it. No map, no S-0-S inside. Just a paper dated 11-2-15, with numbers, a message to Dear Jesus, and a drawing of something.  But still, just finding a bottle, shows how special he is.

While this year was cut short due to my husband, Pete's death, the intensity of the remaining months and days have made up for the ordeal. I've pushed the reset button for myself personally and businesswise. Like when beautiful flowers bloom and drop away, to allow more to take their place, and the roots and stems get stronger and more resilient, my network of friends, customers, and workers has become stronger, as well as business concentration.

I hadn't been paying enough attention to the business side of the restaurant, while Pete was still here. All those wine events paired with new dishes were shining pearls in the clamshells of creativity we pried open. I felt burnt out in the beginning of 2014, then there was the runaway truck that took Annie, a lot of fundraisers, a lot of giving, and before I knew it the year was up, and Pete was fading.

By volunteering during the Made In Hawaii event the second half of this year, 2015, I received opportunities to do demos providing great exposure for Greens & Vines, during the early morning news, and at the Blaisdell Arena, and got recipes in print, first in the event booklet, and later in the Star-Advertiser Midweek. It got me thinking that I should do monthly Un-cooking classes. My students just love being in a commercial kitchen making food. It's good practice for me as I see how to improve my teaching skills. It's also making me tweak recipes like the Thanksgiving ones, that I hadn't made in a year. These are the roots and stems that have not only strengthened my business, but will give birth to a cookbook and offshoots of future travel and demos.

I give thanks for all of your support through the challenging periods and for our receiving the Golden recognition at the HONOLULU MAGAZINE, Hale Aina Awards, the STAR-ADVERTISER, Ilima Awards and the Best of Hawaii awards.

And all your Yelps helps attract more customers. Yelp CEO, Emi Hart invited me to the KITV morning News just before Thanksgiving. We would not still be here without you. With all the partying in December, we will start up our Un-Cooking class on January 3rd, and re-open on January 4th.
