Ahhh, The Simple Things In Life

Welcome 2015!  I don't know if it's because I'm a year older, but, all of a sudden, simplicity; the basics seem most important to me. For instance, it's been in the back of my mind, that I've got to organize, get all that stuff off my dining table so I can complete my taxes on time this year. Since I was so late last year (because I had to organize the STUFF on my table AND desk in order to start filing my taxes), the boxes of files are still there on my dining table along with EVERYTHING else, again! Am I the Queen of mess?
So my New Year's Resolution of doing my taxes on time, triggered the question, "Where should I put all the STUFF?" As if by telepathy or because Travis and Shanna (my son and daughter-in-law) have seen my table and desk, they saw a cry for help. They gave me this book for Xmas. They scaled down when they were warned that their home would be put on the market shortly and someone gave them a copy of this book. Now, if they need to move, no problem.

This book is a heaven send. It's made me realize that it's not a question of storage. Things need to be gathered as a category first, compared, then the one(s) that bring you happiness kept, and the rest DISCARDED before you put anything away. Otherwise, there will be a rebound of the mess. I've even been applying these lessons at the restaurant. Since we had it cleaned from top to bottom and had to put things back, it gave me a good sense of what to discard.

So at home, I started with handbags. WOAH! When, why, and where did I ever use/wear these?  Must've been during the yuppie era, the 80's. Salvatore Ferragamo, Isabelle Fiore, Chanel (knock off from Korea), Lancel, etc.  Jeepers, and all those animal products. I've been a bag hoarder and I didn't even know it. Looking back, I bought a lot of those bags for gifts (still have tags), but forgot about them. Considering that those designer bags filled a box, and the rest of the bags filled 2 more boxes, HELLO! If you got space/storage, you'll fill it.  It feels so good to let it go.

I asked around what to do with these. My best friend Robin said, "SELL! (at a consignment shop, PZAZZ)." I am not proud of the accumulation of STUFF. It's a bad habit of spending that no longer brings happiness.

I read a WALL STREET JOURNAL article, "Stop Me Before I spend Again!" 11/30/14. Instead of giving STUFF, GIVE MEMORIES and/or MAKE IT CONSUMABLE (like gourmet coffee, meals together, etc.)

I remember my Uncle George's Sunset Beachfront house. The whole family including cousins, aunties, my dad with fishing poles and bells, etc. were all there. Cousins dug deep holes on two sides of the beach to play war, throwing cones from the pine trees. We slept on the floor at night, but just the memory of us all being together was precious.

These memories are valuable. The STUFF can go.
