Grief and Thanks

Been so sad about what's been going on in Ferguson, Missouri (read Misery) listening to parents' voices explaining why a few youth were setting fires, etc. Though there's no good in that kind of destruction, I could hear grief and despair in the parents' voices, and got a lump in my throat. I'm so glad there are protests going on across the country. Just like in the 60's . . .

Mother Mother

There's too many of you crying

Brother, brother, brother

There's far too many of you dying

...Picket lines and picket signs

Don't punish me with brutality

Talk to me, so you can see

Oh, what's going on...

(from Marvin Gaye's, "What's Goin' On")

    People are yearning for Justice.

Just before we closed at 5pm Wednesday for Thanksgiving, I felt giddy, like it was the last day of school, or Winter Break. It was so exciting to have a few days off.

Spent Thanksgiving at my son, Travis' and new daughter-in-law, Shanna's cozy home in the back of Kahaluu. I treasure family and friends get-togethers like that. We can't take life for granted. It's been a hard year having lost our Annie, and the impact of Annie alive and in death touched so many people's lives. It was a close call for Pete too. I'm so lucky that I still have my Pete!

Love each and every day of life. Embrace the blue skies of Hawaii. Reach for the stars and hold each other's hand as often as you can. I love holding my mom's hands. They're always so cold. Mom's in a care home now, and she appreciates being warmed up. She calls me a "Hot Mama!"

We went out to Mokuleia on Friday to enjoy our close-knit friends. I think we've been going out there for 15+? years. I took a look at my recipe book and was glad I never finished it. In it the story of my journey ended at the Living Light Culinary Arts School. The Licious Dishes journey begins there, and on to Greens & Vines.

I am so thankful for having found a passion in life that I can share with others, and especially to have a tight kitchen team to surround me like angels who bring comfort and make work play. They are always laughing in the kitchen. Never idle. When asked to take a task on the fly, they are there to make the first volley, and boom! There's someone at their side to take up what they were doing like a back-up volley. Perrrrfect! And, I'm so lucky to have business managers like Dani and Wing to keep me organized, and Farmers' Market managers like Pete and Gio.

Michael Christenson has been on a roll sprouting up new winners for our new menu.  Caramelized French Onion Soup (which we featured in our French Tapas Menu during Restaurant Week), and Pete "could eat a gallon of it," Bagels with "Crème Cheese" and Capers, Cucumbers and Tomatoes, Romanesco "Buffalo Wings" n Cashew Dill "Ra-anch" (say Ranch like a goat). And, don't get me started on desserts like Ice Kreme, Punkin Pie hearts, Jelly Rolls... woo hoooo!

The front-of-the-house and farmers' market teams are the best it's ever been. They are very reliable, loving to be there and loving to share the philosophy and values of being raw vegan gourmet. Blessed with a great attitude, they take it upon themselves to learn more. With a great attitude, you can accomplish whatever you want in life. Matt Jisa handles the late shift for me, and he and Melissa Chang have been gems keeping up with our social media, David Cressman with our wines, Aisling, Katie, Devlin, Kaylah and Janessa keep the tables turning and customers beaming. Aisling will be leaving us shortly to WOF in Australia. Good luck in your travels, Aisling.

Lexi threw an outrageously huge Scorpio Birthday party at Greens & Vines that poured out into part of the patio. Her friend, a pastry chef at Michel's made a Scorpio topping out of fondant frosting for Lexi's tri-layer cake. Wow, what talent. We're loaded with Scorpios: Lexi, me, Michael, David, and Phally. Lexi had martial artists doing sets using the spear, sword, hands, and the Dragon Dance. This helped us usher in a New Year, since our anniversary was at the end of October.

Thank you all for helping us achieve the Silver Award at the Hale Aina Awards banquet! We moved up a notch from Bronze. We're so happy that more and more people are eating healthy.

The Morphing of Greens & Vines

Greens & Vines will finally take center stage on our Website, Banners and Brochures, and has already been center stage in newspapers and magazines. We welcome designer, Gay Dochin, to our Greens & Vines family who has been helping us seamlessly continue our newsletters and ads these past few months. We say Thank You, Good Luck and Good-bye to Darius Rustam and Tiffany Davis-Rustam, our designers for the past 8 years, who shut down their design business, to travel and pursue their respective artistic interests.  While we will keep the Licious Dishes website so people can continue to order our Meal Plans, we will focus major changes on the Greens & Vines website.

If you've been following me since the beginning of Greens & Vines, our first motto (in 2012) was "Share The Lifestyle," meaning that Raw Vegan Gourmet was a lifestyle, not a diet. While that is still true, our motto has been morphing as we grow. Last year we said Raw Vegan Gourmet's Gone Glam (in 2013) in reference to our vegan Escargot, Caviar; foods associated with glamour and fine dining. Now, this year (in 2014) our banner on our ad says, (Join the) Raw Vegan Gourmet Movement.
Carrying the banner of a raw vegan gourmet movement means we are much more than just a restaurant serving food and drink. We make choices every day, which result in perpetuating our health and Mother Nature's by not using animal products.

In April, I prepared a power point presentation "Sustainable Meat? Nope!" for the Vegetarian Society Hawaii, to rebut the growing "Grass-Fed=Sustainable Meat, Slow Food Movement, and "Eating Local Meat is Sustainable Movement." While preparing for it, the real numbers of Greenhouse Gas Emissions and resulting cause of Climate Change from livestock was so overbearing, and yet so not talked about, that it put me on a mission. The fact that IRREVERSIBLE CLIMATE CHANGE IS SO CLOSE TO SEALING OUR FATE WITHIN A FEW YEARS (2-3) has made me see I gotta get my mojo going on my book next year (if Alice Inoue's astrological reading is as accurate as it's always been for the past 13 years for me), I should have time (?) to work on it and complete it, as well as  practice and re-doing my power point presentation.  Then, I'll slap a DVD of it on the book and take my message global. They say if you want to manifest something, put it on paper. So here it is.

Since then, I've been blessed with a slew of Cover Pages; on Dining Out once on the front, another on the back, Oahu's Top Restaurant Guide on the back, and many inside articles. That's great for starters.
