Elections 2014: Old Guard Versus the New
I've been riding the fence (i.e., actively fence-sitting) following the Gubernatorial and Senate race. It helped a lot when reading David Shapiro's flASHback column in the July 20, 2014, Star Advertiser, "Old leaders need to make room for younger talent," jockeyed my attention with the final warning of its last sentence. "We commit the political equivalent of eating our seed corn if we keep shutting out the young talent we need to carry us into the future."
Uu-hu-hu! And, so it is. The old guard represents the old and new ruling class "in order to protect its workers' jobs." It's the needs of the few versus the future of all our kids, of what land and water we have left for food (not seed corn) and for us to drink, of our environment on land and sea, worldwide, not just here. It's like Sears closing down. It served its purpose when it was new.
Open the papers. You'll see new faces in the Mayoral races as well with the progressive energy to face off in issues like anti-GMO, anti plastic-foam food boxes. Styrene in the Styrofoam has been found to be a cancer-causing agent in animals, and the plastic breaks down into tiny particles, getting into the land and sea and into the fish.
Agent Orange originally tested in the forests of Kauai before going off to defoliate the Vietnamese forests, has come back to Kauai to kill off super weeds that have grown tolerant to Monsanto's Round Up. It has been found to cause Diabetes II in returning Vietnam Vets. Change. It's a hard pill to swallow.

Meat Glue
What do Chicken Mac-Nuggets, Fake Crab Meat, Fish Fillet, Filet-Mignon-like Bone-less Meat have in common? Meat Glue. A powdery substance made from the coagulant of cow's blood, it does a good job holding pieces of meat together that would've been chucked. Meat Glue, is tossed with the meats, rolled into saran wrap, frozen over night, and cut into boneless filet-mignon-like steaks. From a $4 stew meat it's turned into a $25 Filet-Mignon Steak. It's also called Surimi in Asian countries as a paste for fishcake or sticks. Eeeeu. Looking back, that's probably what I was eating while touring S. Korea in 2002, with my aunties and cousins. I'd order fish or shrimp, but get fishcake. I had to break off from the gang with my cousin and have a dinner without that fishcake. The active ingredient, Transglutaminase, could cause Parkinsons, Celiacs Disease... How did I know it wouldn't be good?
