March 1-31, 2014:
Greens & Vines Participating
Keep It Local: Localicious Hawaii Campaign Pesto Tomato Zucchini Pasta w/Local Green Salad $16.00 $1.00 Donated to Getting Agricultural Education Into Schools
"Localicious Hawaii is a program of the Hawaii Agricultural Foundation (HAF) that recognizes local restaurants committed to buying local while also raising funds to grow future farmers. Participating restaurants will be donating $1 from select menu item(s) created from locally grown or raised product to HAF's agricultural education programs." They hope to raise $50,000 to get Veggie U Garden Kits into 50 elementary schools (www.veggieu.org). Each restaurant that raises a minimum of $500 will be able to adopt a DOE 4th grape classroom wanting the program in their school. Please help us raise the minimum and more. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
SUSTAINABILITY AND FOOD CHOICE: Why Eating Local, "Less" Meat, and Taking Baby Steps Won't Work
By Richard Oppenlander
This amazing in-depth book and 1 hour presentation is a total wake-up call. The facts are riveting! There are 10-times-the amount of livestock to every person on earth (60 billion to 6 billion respectively). By 2030, we will need 2 worlds to support that equation. Three million children die of hunger every year when they could've been fed food and water that is instead, planted and fed to livestock (add pigs, chickens etc.) right next door. The oceans are warming and fish depleted, we're running out of water and the rain forests that absorb the carbon dioxide and produce oxygen have been butchered to grow livestock in its place. Mother Earth is just 2 degrees away from an irreversible "cancer" caused not just by global warming; we're talking about Global Depletion. We cannot afford to take baby steps when big adult strides are a necessity. Meatless Mondays (and fishless, chicken-less, etc.) must become an everyday choice to make a difference. 51% of the world's greenhouse gasses are caused by the use of animals as food. You can make a change in the world's outcome, every time you pick up your fork. Our food choices, what we grow, should be based on the healthiest, efficient foot print. As health is wealth, so will a country's wealth be judged on the preservation of its natural resources.
GOOGLE THIS NOW and watch. I just bought both of Richard Oppenlander's books and will have his Comfortably Unaware book for sale at Greens & Vines for $11 at cost. Please arm yourself with this knowledge. It will help you take the right path in your food choices. No amount of electric cars, electricity-saving light bulbs, etc.; the things Al Gore suggested in his "Inconvenient Truth" will make enough change in preventing Global Depletion as what you choose to eat. And it doesn't cost anything extra (like buying solar panels). What an eye-opener. I would never have guessed that the direction of my upcoming talk on "Sustainable Meat? Nope" at the Vegetarian Society Meeting (Ala Wai Clubhouse, April 8th at 7pm, and Maui, April 10th at the Cameron Center) would cause me to become an activist, again. When people suggest to me that what I'm doing must be hard work, my response is that it's not a job, it's a movement.
