Underlying Cause of Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy Targeted in Gene Therapy Trial
FPN Underlying Cause of DPN
VM BioPharma, the United States division of ViroMed Co., Ltd announced on June 27, 2016 the first patient was dosed in the recently initiated Phase 3 clinical study evaluating VM202, a proprietary DNA based biopharmaceutical, in patients with painful diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN). What makes this research unique is that this is the first Phase 3 study to evaluate the use of gene therapy as a way to nourish and recover damaged nerve cells instead of for the purpose of treating symptoms. Genetic Biomarker may Predict Nerve Pain Side Effects Associated with Prostate Cancer Treatment
Taxanes are a group of drugs commonly used to

treat cancers of the breast, lung, ovary, or prostate, but its use can be limited by significant side effects. Researchers from Moffitt Cancer Center report prostate cancer patients who have a variation in the VAC14 gene are more susceptible to the side effect of peripheral neuropathy when treated with the taxane docetaxel. The study concludes that VAC14 should be prioritized for further validation of its potential role as a predictor of docetaxel-induced neuropathy and biomarker for treatment individualization.  To learn more click here !
Caregivers Say:  Pay Attention to Us
Calls for better support for those unsung heroes caring

for sick and/or elderly loved ones resounded at a national caregiving conference held in Washington D.C. last month. Being a caregiver - or needing a caregiver - will affect most of us at some point in our lives. At the conference, AARP, CEO, JoAnn Jenkins said, "We're quickly coming to realize at AARP that in many cases, people will be spending more time and resources caring for their aging parents than they did raising their own children. And the simple fact is that the public and private sector policies on family caregivers have not kept pace with the changing family dynamic in our nation." If you are chronically ill or disabled, what can you do to find the right caregiver - for yourself or a loved one - and what can you do to keep from getting 'burnout' if you are the caregiver. Click here to visit the FPN website for some suggestions.
Research Identifies Underlying Mechanism of Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy
"The general thinking is that no single drug can be effective

for the treatment of all peripheral neuropathies, which stem from multiple causes," Dr. Sandra Rieger [MDI Biological Laboratory, Bar Harbor, Maine] said. "But our research indicates that there may potentially be a common underlying mechanism for some neuropathies affecting the sensory nervous system that could be manipulated with drugs targeting a single enzyme."
