Welcome to the e-Newsletter from Barnstable County Regional Substance Abuse Council. This newsletter is designed to provide timely information on substance abuse and other related topics for people living and working in Barnstable County.

RSAC COORDINATOR UPDATE | |
Farewell to RSAC Coordinator Samantha Kossow
Samantha Kossow, Barnstable County Regional Substance Abuse Council's (RSAC) coordinator since 2014, resigned her position on August 31, 2016. Samantha has been integral to the success of the RSAC through her efforts publishing the RSAC e-newsletter, organizing committees and staying on top of resources, news and outreach. We will miss her insights and knowledge of substance use prevention, intervention, treatment and recovery on Cape Cod.

Join the Voices for Recovery: Our Families, Our Stories, Our Recovery!
Every September, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) sponsors National Recovery Month to increase awareness and understanding of mental and substance use disorders and to encourage individuals in need of treatment and recovery services to seek help. Recovery Month celebrates people in long-term recovery and recognizes the dedicated workers who provide the prevention, treatment, and recovery support services.

The Sandwich Democratic Town Committee will sponsor a pro/con discussion panel on the November ballot initiative to legalize recreational marijuana. This is a non-partisan event and is open to all members of the voting public. Panelists include District Attorney Michael O'Keefe and State Senator Vinnie deMacedo; Richard Elrick and Jim Borghesani of the Campaign To Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol; and State Representative Randy Hunt.

The Citizens' Choice: Legalizing Recreational Marijuana

WGBH and the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate are presenting "The Citizens' Choice: Legalizing Recreational Marijuana". State Rep. Jonathan Hecht (D-Watertown), will provide opening remarks on the Citizens' Initiative Review Project, a program aiming to address confusion among voters about ballot questions. Jim Braude, host of WGBH's Greater Boston will moderate a panel discussion featuring Andrew Freedman, Director of Marijuana Coordination for the State of Colorado, Madeline Martinez, Director Emeritus of Oregon NORML, Co-Founder of the NORML Women's Alliance, and Owner of the World Famous Cannabis Caf�, and Massachusetts State Senator Jason Lewis (D-Winchester).

DPH Tracking Ambulance Transports Related to Opioid Overdose
The Massachusetts Dept. of Public Health has begun tracking ambulance transports related to opioid overdose. Its first summary report for the period January 1, 2013 through March 31, 2016 was posted in August 2016 . The data for Q1 of 2016 are estimates.

NEWS FROM MA EXECUTIVE OFFICE OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES | | Core Competencies Expanded for Students and Professionals on Prevention and Management of Prescription Drug Misuse The Baker-Polito Administration, in partnership with the state's Advanced Practice Nursing (APRN) programs and professional organizations, physician assistant programs, the Massachusetts Association of Physician Assistants, the Massachusetts League of Community Health Centers, and all affiliated community health centers have agreed to expand the reach and use of the pioneering core competencies established previously for the prevention and management of prescription drug misuse.

Keeping Opioids on the Sidelines
MassTAPP has been working with the Massachusetts Bureau of Substance Abuse Services and the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association to develop resources for parents, coaches, athletic directors and other school personnel to keep athletes safe while playing sports. As a part of this effort, they have posted EDC's article informing readers on preventing misuse of painkillers by teen athletes.

NEWS FROM US SURGEON GENERAL | | US Surgeon General Asks Health Professionals to "Turn the Tide"
The Surgeon General urged clinicians to visit a website his office launched this month,TurnTheTideRx.org, where they can pledge their commitment to combating opioid misuse by enhancing education for treating pain, by screening patients for opioid use disorder, and by leading a shift in the public perception of addiction so that it is treated as chronic illness rather than as a moral failing.

Teaching Students About Alcohol's Effects on the Brain? There's an App for That
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has launched a new, free mobile app for tablets to help fifth and sixth grade teachers educate their students about the consequences of alcohol use. Alcohol's Effects on the Brain, or AlcoholFX, is designed to teach students the knowledge and skills they need to avoid underage drinking.

NEWS FROM US DEPT. OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES | | HHS Awards $53 Million to Address Opioid EpidemicOn August 31, 2016, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced $53 million in funding to 44 States, four tribes and the District of Columbia to improve access to treatment for opioid use disorders, reduce opioid related deaths, and strengthen drug misuse prevention efforts. In addition, funding will also support improved data collection and analysis around opioid misuse and overdose as well as better tracking of fatal and nonfatal opioid-involved overdoses.
Massachusetts was awarded funds for t he Enhanced State Surveillance of Opioid-Involved Morbidity and Mortality program. $4.27 million in funds went to 12 states to better track fatal and nonfatal opioid-involved overdoses. States will use the funding to:
- Increase the timeliness of reporting nonfatal and fatal opioid overdose and associated risk factors;
- Disseminate surveillance findings to key stakeholders working to prevent opioid-involved overdoses; and
- Share data with CDC to support improved multi-state surveillance of and response to opioid-involved overdoses.

CALL 911 TO REPORT AN OVERDOSE | |
Make the Right Call
The Massachusetts Department of Public Health and the Massachusetts Attorney General's Office recently launched the Make the Right Call campaign statewide to raise awareness about the Good Samaritan law, and to encourage people to call 911 when they witness an overdose.
Call 911 to report an overdose. The Good Samaritan law will protect you from prosecution. First responders are focused on saving lives by administering naloxone to reverse an overdose. And, the Good Samaritan law protects victims and those who call 911 for help from charge or prosecution for possession of controlled substances when the call is made.

Learn to Cope
Learn to Cope is a support group for parents, family members, spouses, and caregivers who have a family member who is addicted to opiates, alcohol, or other drugs. Learn to Cope offers experienced facilitators, resources, informational material, guest speakers (in long term recovery or professionals in the field), overdose education, and Narcan enrollment at all weekly meetings. Parents Supporting Parents
Parents Supporting Parents is a group of people who have come together as parents and family members coping and dealing with children/loved one's addiction. Their mission is to support, strengthen, and educate one another as they share their lives. Their goal is to help their loved ones find and live in recovery, and for all members to live a healthy lifestyle. Meeting schedule:

Mothers Helping Mothers
Mothers Helping Mothers is a support group for women struggling with the emotional difficulties associated with addiction and recovery during the pregnant and postpartum phases of life. Free childcare is provided during the meetings by The Children's Study Home. Anyone planning on attending the meeting and needing childcare is asked to call ahead. All ages are welcome. Nar-Anon
Nar-Anon Family Groups is a twelve step fellowship that offers a recovery program for those affected by someone's addiction. The only requirement for membership is that there be a problem of addiction in a relative or friend. Nar-Anon is adapted from Narcotics Anonymous and uses Nar-Anon's Twelve Steps, Twelve Traditions, and Twelve Concepts.

Gosnold Family Support Groups
The Gosnold Reaching Out program is a resource for family members and loved ones affected by addiction. It assists the family at all stages of addiction through education, intervention, and support. Information and Education Forums help family members gain a basic understanding of the signs and symptoms of addiction, treatment options, and stages of recovery. An educated and supportive family has a positive impact on treatment outcomes.

Other Resources Al-Anon - The primary purpose of Al-Anon is to help families and friends of alcoholics. Members of Al-Anon learn to live happily whether the alcoholic continues to drink or not. We learn that alcoholism is a disease and that we are not alone.
Alcoholics Anonymous - Alcoholics Anonymous is an international fellowship of men and women who have had a drinking problem. It is nonprofessional, self-supporting, multiracial, apolitical, and available almost everywhere. There are no age or education requirements. Membership is open to anyone who wants to do something about his or her drinking problem.
Narcotics Anonymous - NA is a nonprofit fellowship or society of men and women for whom drugs had become a major problem. We are recovering addicts who meet regularly to help each other stay clean. This is a program of complete abstinence from all drugs. There is only one requirement for membership, the desire to stop using. |
