 Join the Voices for Recovery ... RECOVERY FEST 2016

Recovery Fest Cape Cod is a new event to celebrate the achievements of the Cape Cod recovery community. The free celebration aligns with National Recovery Month and will offer food, activities, and entertainment with special guests Senator Dan Wolf, CCAR's Phil Valentine, with music by 12 Step Boogie. The event is open to the public and is located at the Hyannis Town Green on Main Street.  View flyer.

CAPE & ISLANDS BEHAVIORAL HEALTH  SUMMIT
Cape & Islands Behavioral Health SummitFriday, October 7, 2016, 8:30 - 4:00 PM, Resort and Conference Center, Hyannis.

Registration is now open! On October 7, 2016, at the 4th Annual Behavioral Health Summit the Behavioral Health Provider Coalition will present "Milestones of Behavioral Health: A look at the science and lived experience of behavioral health across the lifespan". This program will target our community's most vulnerable populations - and promises to inform and inspire health care providers of Cape Cod to participate and support better ways of providing services and caring for our community.
 
The Summit is designed for those who provide care or support services across the entirety of the behavioral health spectrum including physicians, psychologists, social workers, counselors, nurses, administrators, peer advocates, first responders, public safety, teachers and other health professionals serving children/adults and their families in our community.  Nursing, Physician, LICSW, LMHC, and EMS CEUs will be available.

BARNSTABLE COUNTY HOME CONSORTIUM

CONSOLIDATED ANNUAL PERFORMANCE EVALUATION REPORT (CAPER)

The Barnstable County HOME Consortium has completed its 2015 Fiscal Year (July 1, 2015 - June 30, 2016) utilizing U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's (HUD) Federal Fiscal Year 2015 HOME Program funds.  A Draft Consolidated Annual Performance Evaluation Report (CAPER) outlining the year's accomplishments and challenges is available on the Department of Human Services website or at the Department of Human Services, 3195 Main St., Barnstable, MA  02630.

 

Public comment period will begin August 29, 2016 and end September 13, 2016.  Written comments should be sent on or before September 13, 2016 at 4:30 PM to the Barnstable County HOME Consortium, P.O. Box 427, Barnstable, MA  02630 or by email to mspringer@barnstablecounty.org.  The CAPER will be submitted to HUD by September 30, 2016.  Read the full notice in English, Spanish, and Portuguese.

YMCA PARKINSON's PROGRAMMING

Join the YMCA Cape Cod on Thursdays, starting September 8th, 12:30 - 1:30 PM for Parkinson's Yoga, free for members.  Findings suggest that yoga practice improves motor function which may be partially explained by improvements in balance, strength, posture and gait.  Due to the progressive nature of Parkinson's Disease, yoga may offer a way to maintain wellness and perhaps quality of life.

The YMCA Cape Cod is hosting a World Diabetes Day Conference on Monday, November 14, 2016.  The YMCA is looking for speakers, vendors, and community organizations who would like to present or take part in the event.  Presentations from physicians on topics including Diabetes: Fact or Fiction and Diabetes and Aging, along with the Barnstable County nurse for blood glucose and blood pressure screenings are lined up.

SPAULDING REHABILITATION HOSPITAL PRESENTS: STORY OF SURVIVAL, FAITH AND LOVE AFTER LIFE-ALTERING BRAIN INJURY

In the case of traumatic brain injury (TBI), the impact may be as great for the family or caregiver as it is for the individual with TBI.  As part of the special Healthy Living Series, a couple shares their story of enduring love after life-altering brain injury.  Event is brought to you by Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital of Cape Cod's Patient and Family Advisory Council in commemoration of National Rehabilitation Awareness Week.  Event will be held on Tuesday, September 20, 2016 at 5:00 PM at Covenant Community Church, 360 Quaker Meeting House Road in East Sandwich.

NEED TO KNOW

Alzheimer's Disease, What You Need to Know is a FREE educational program for town and community employees presented by Hope Dementia & Alzheimer's Services.  Event will be held on Tuesday, September 20, 2016, 12:30 - 4:30 PM at Heatherwood at King's Way, Route 6A, Yarmouth Port.

Help yourself, your community and Cape Cod to become more dementia friendly.  This training is designed to provide a basic understanding of how to work with individuals and families who have Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia.  Read more and print registration form.

NEWS FROM THE FAMILY PANTRY

OF CAPE COD

September is "Hunger Action Month" and in support, the Family Pantry of Cape Cod is launching their new Mobile Pantry. 

 

The Family Pantry has partnered with the Chatham Council on Aging as the first distribution site for the new Mobile Pantry.  Food distribution will begin on September 21st and occur on the third Wednesday of every month from 12 Noon - 2:30 PM at the COA building at 193 Stony Hill Rd. in Chatham.  Chatham COA residents will need to pre-register for the service by calling the Chatham COA outreach team at 508/945-5190.

BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS OF CAPE COD SITE BASED MENTORING INFO SESSION

 Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cape Cod and the Islands  is hosting an Information Session for their Site Based Mentoring Opportunities on Thursday, September 22 at 5:30 PM at their offices at 684 Main St., Hyannis.

YARMOUTH COMMUNITY PRESERVATION

PUBLIC HEARING

The Yarmouth Community Preservation Committee will hold its Annual Community Preservation public meeting on Thursday, September 22, 2016 at 6:00 PM at the first Congregational Church, 329 Route 6A, Yarmouth Port.  Come hear about the exciting projects underway and hear from several guest speakers about past project success.

Community Preservation funds are available to improve Yarmouth in the four areas of community housing, historic preservation, open space protection, and recreational opportunities.

PARKINSON SUPPORT NETWORK OF

CAPE COD FALL FLING 2016

NEW Noncredit Course at BSU Cape Cod, Raising a Reader, will be held on Mondays September 26, October 3, 17 & 24, November 7 & 14, from 6:30 - 8:00 PM.  Fee is $149. 

If you are a parent who wants to infuse a love of reading and books into your children's lives, then this is the class for you.  Raising a Reader is open to the community.  Participants do not need to be registered college students or college graduates.

PEER SUPPORT GROUP FOR COMPULSIVE ACQUIRING, SAVING AND HOARDING
Have your belongings taken over your house, life and social calendar?  A new Peer Support Group for compulsive acquiring, saving and hoarding will begin at the end of September, Date/Time TBA.  This FREE group will meet for 15 sessions at the Falmouth Human Services Office, 65A Town Hall Square, Falmouth. View flyer.  For information or to register call 508/548-0533 - must pre-register.
HOPE HOSPICE OFFERS NEW SUPPORT GROUPS FOR THOSE EXPERIENCING GRIEF OR LOSS
Hope Hospice, part of the HopeHealth family of services, announced new community bereavement support groups to be held in Bourne, Easton, Hyannis, Middleboro, Orleans and Westport beginning in September.  All support groups provide a safe, confidential and supportive setting for anyone experiencing loss or grief.  Programs are led by licensed professionals from Hope Hospice with specialized training and extensive experience.

More Clearly, on Monday, October 3, 2016, 4 - 6:30 PM.  Seminar will be facilitated by Cynthia Stead, Executive Director & Lynette Fiske, Associate Director, of Sight Loss Services, Inc., a 35 year old Cape-wide non-profit organization dedicated to self-help and advocacy for the newly blind, the visually handicapped, and people with progressive eye disease. Medicare's Part C (Medicare Advantage Plan) and Part D (Prescription Plan) Annual Open Enrollment is October 15 - December 7th and will be here before you know it.  It is very important to review your Medicare options during this period and you will have a chance to CHANGE your plan during these dates. ALZHEIMER'S FAMILY SUPPORT CENTER CAPE COD WALKS THE WALK

New Face at the C&I United Way:  Beth Bowman is the first Community Impact Officer.  In this role, Ms. Bowman is responsible for working with grantees and partners to make a lasting change through sustainable projects.  Ms. Bowman is a licensed independent clinical social worker with nearly 20 years of experience in the settings of substance abuse, mental health and child welfare.

Back to School:  A New Year
Local Cape & Islands children are headed back to school, but not all of them have the supplies or support they need. Here are some local "Back to School" Drives and volunteer opportunities supporting education in our community:
  • Katelynn's Closet in Yarmouth is looking for clothing donations for school-aged kids (4 - 18 years old)  Click for more information.

NEWS FROM HOPE HEALTH
On Thursday, August 25th, Cape Angels co-chairs Therese Geary and Jennifer Mason presented a check for nearly $70,000 to Hope Health in support of Hope Care for Kids, HopeHealth's Pediatric Palliative Care Program.  The fundraising event was held on July 9th at Allen Harbors Yacht Club in Harwich.

HopeHealth's PediPal program provides pain and symptom management, assessment and case management, spiritual care, social services and counseling for children and family members.  The program is partially funded through the Massachusetts Department of Public Health Pediatric Palliative Care Network.  Read more.....
