DEPARTMENT CORNER   

 
Samantha Kossow, Coordinator of the Regional Substance Abuse Council (RSAC) since March 2014, is leaving her position on August 31, 2016. Samantha has been integral to the success of the RSAC through her efforts publishing the RSAC e-newsletter, organizing committees and staying on top of resources, news and outreach.  We will miss her insights and knowledge of substance use prevention, intervention, treatment and recovery on Cape Cod.

NEWS FROM THE BEHAVIORAL HEALTH  PROVIDER COALITION
Cape & Islands Behavioral Health SummitFriday, October 7, 2016, 8:30 - 4:00 PM, Resort and Conference Center, Hyannis.

Registration is now open! On October 7, 2016, at the 4th Annual Behavioral Health Summit the Behavioral Health Provider Coalition will present "Milestones of Behavioral Health: A look at the science and lived experience of behavioral health across the lifespan". This program will target our community's most vulnerable populations - and promises to inform and inspire health care providers of Cape Cod to participate and support better ways of providing services and caring for our community.
 
The Summit is designed for those who provide care or support services across the entirety of the behavioral health spectrum including physicians, psychologists, social workers, counselors, nurses, administrators, peer advocates, first responders, public safety, teachers and other health professionals serving children/adults and their families in our community.  Nursing, Physician, LICSW, LMHC, and EMS CEUs will be available.

    THE PERSONAL PROJECT:  A SERIES OF EVENTS TO BENEFIT THE ALZHEIMER'S FAMILY SUPPORT CENTER

Alzheimer's and other dementia-related illnesses are diseases not just of individuals, but of the families and communities in which we all live.  Please join the Alzheimer's Family Support Center to witness, explore, celebrate and support the 10,000 individuals and caregivers living with cognitive disease.

BARNSTABLE COUNTY HOME CONSORTIUM

CONSOLIDATED ANNUAL PERFORMANCE EVALUATION REPORT (CAPER)

The Barnstable County HOME Consortium has completed its 2015 Fiscal Year (July 1, 2015 - June 30, 2016) utilizing U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's (HUD) Federal Fiscal Year 2015 HOME Program funds.  A Draft Consolidated Annual Performance Evaluation Report (CAPER) outlining the year's accomplishments and challenges is available on the Department of Human Services website or at the Department of Human Services, 3195 Main St., Barnstable, MA  02630.

 

Public comment period will begin August 29, 2016 and end September 13, 2016.  Written comments should be sent on or before September 13, 2016 at 4:30 PM to the Barnstable County HOME Consortium, P.O. Box 427, Barnstable, MA  02630 or by email to [email protected].  The CAPER will be submitted to HUD by September 30, 2016.  Read the full notice in English, Spanish, and Portuguese.

ANNUAL RIBBON CEREMONIES

NATIONAL SUICIDE PREVENTION DAY

Join the Cape & Islands Suicide Prevention Coalition for the Annual Ribbon Ceremonies in remembrance of those lost to suicide and support the many friends and families left behind and for hope for National Suicide Prevention Day.

 

Thursday, September 8, 11:15 AM - 12:45 PM on the front lawn of the Barnstable Superior Courthouse, 3195 Main St., Barnstable Village followed by a short reception.

 

Saturday, September 10, 12 Noon at the Nantucket Atheneum, 1 India Street.  Ceremony followed by a short reception.  Samaritans on Cape Cod and the Islands will also hold a Safe Harbor support group meeting at 1:00 PM for those who have lost someone to suicide.

The Safety Savvy Kids (Home Alone Program) provides tweens and teens with the knowledge to be safe and responsible.  Focusing on inside, outside, and environmental safety, students gain the knowledge, reinforcement and independence to be responsible to stay home alone.
ONE HEART, ONE RECOVERY
Come celebrate the power of yoga in recovery! Funds raised
will benefit the One Recovery Boston initiative of Magnolia
New Beginnings, a 501(c)(3) organization that offers addiction
treatment scholarships to young people from 16-26. Magnolia
provides funds for young people to access yoga, rock
climbing, extreme sports, fitness centers and other resiliency
activities to prevent substance use and reduce relapse and
recidivism.
 
Magnolia New Beginnings is hosting an initiative/fundraising event One Heart, One Recovery, at Cape Cod Community College on September 10, 2016 during National Yoga and Recovery Month.  View flyer for details.

IMMIGRATION RESOURCE CENTER AT COMMUNITY ACTION COMMITTEE

OF THE CAPE & ISLANDS

The Immigration Resource Center is a new program at CACCI established to provide free assistance to residents of Barnstable, Dukes, and Nantucket counties with questions relating to immigration law.  The Center provides full spectrum assistance helping individuals obtain American citizenship, apply for or renew green cards, adjust immigration status, apply for protective visas or work permits, etc.  There is an attorney on staff, Collin Mickle, as well as a BIA-certified immigration representative and will soon add full-time case managers to better serve the community.  Staff is multilingual in English, Portuguese and Spanish and will be working on capacity in other languages as well. HEALING AFTER LOSS SUPPORT GROUP
Beacon Hospice is offering a grief group and educational series "Healing after Loss: What am I Needing?" hosted by the First Federated Church of Hyannis, 320 Main St., Hyannis.  This group will meet on Tuesday afternoons from 1:00 - 2:30 PM from September 13 through November 1, 2016 and will close to applicants on September 27, 2016.  Group is free of charge and open to anyone in the community who is currently experiencing grief and has lost a loved one to death in the last 2 years. AGE-FRIENDLY CAPE COD
One in three Americans is now 50 years or older.  By the year 2030 one out of five people in the U.S. will be age 65+.  How will each of the Cape's 15 towns and our entire region support our aging population.

Join Age-Friendly Yarmouth on Thursday, September 15, 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM at the Yarmouth Senior Center, 528 Forest Road, West Yarmouth, MA for a Panel Discussion on Building an Age-Friendly Region.  Experts from across the Commonwealth will talk about how they were successful in mobilizing key stakeholders in their communities to work collaboratively to build regional age-friendly initiatives. ELDER SUICIDE PREVENTION TRAINING

FOR CAPE & ISLANDS COMMUNITIES

September 21, 2016, 9 AM - 4:30 PM at the Chatham Police Department, 249 George Ryder Rd., Chatham. 

This suicide prevention training led by the Samaritans on Cape Cod and the Islands is designed to reduce the incident of suicide among adults age 55 and older.  The training is open to the public and is appropriate for anyone who has contact with older adults during their professional, personal, or volunteer activities.  View flyer & registration form

Prevention of Marijuana Use and the Brain

On September 28, 2016 from 8:30 AM - 4:00 PM at the Sturbridge Host Hotel and Conference Center, the Bureau of Substance Abuse Services (BSAS) and AdCAre will be hosting a one-day workshop on the prevention of marijuana use and the brain.  More details.

MPHA Forum: Digging Deeper: The Public Health and Criminal Justice Implications for Marijuana Legalization

In November 2016, Massachusetts voters will have the opportunity to vote on a ballot initiative that could legalize the recreational use of marijuana and make it available on a commercial basis through regulated retail outlets.  On September 16 from 8:30 - 10:30 AM at the Framingham Town Hall, the Massachusetts Public Health Association and MetroWest Foundation will host a forum on Marijuana Policy.  Join them for a panel discussion with experts representing different positions on the public health and criminal justice implications of the ballot initiative that could legalize the recreational use of marijuana.  More information.
GRANDPARENTS RAISING GRANDCHILDREN SUPPORT GROUPS
Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Support Group is held at the Barnstable Senior Center on the 3rd Friday of the month from 12 - 1:00 PM.  Appointments are also available to speak with an attorney but must register in advance by calling 508/771-4336.

The Grandparent Advocacy Project meets the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of the month at the Cape Cod Family Resource Center. 29 Basset Lane, Hyannis.  For more information call 508/771-4336.

NEWS FROM HOUSING ASSISTANCE CORPORATION
Housing Assistance Corporation (HAC) offers affordable homes for sale for first time home buyers who meet certain income and asset guidelines.  These homes must be purchased as primary residences and are sold with resale restriction to assure future affordability.

Cotuit Meadows: three new 3-bedroom affordable homes.  Application deadline September 30, 2016 at 5:00 PM.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: THREE R'S TUTORING PROGRAM OF ELDER SERVICES OF CAPE COD & ISLANDS
The Senor Service Corps of Elder Services of Cape Cod and the Islands is recruiting volunteers, age 55 and older, for its Three R's Tutoring Program and for its intergenerational book and math clubs in the schools in the Barnstable, Bourne, Nauset, Monomoy, Dennis/Yarmouth and Sandwich school districts.  Mileage and training are provided.  For more information please contact Ann Gallagher at 508/394-4630 ext 521 or email [email protected].
SAMARITANS VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Do friends and family tell you that you're a good listener? Are you looking for a volunteer opportunity where you can really make a difference?  Then volunteering for the Samaritans on Cape Cod and the Islands could be a great fit for you!
 
Our volunteers are not counselors or therapist, so no experience is required in order to volunteer with us. All you need is the capacity to care and we'll help with the rest.
 
Volunteers are trained in non-judgmental active listening so as to best assist our callers who are lonely, depressed, and isolated. Our next volunteer training session  is scheduled for September 19, 20, 26, 27, and 28 from 5:45 p.m.-8:45 p.m. at our office in Falmouth.  If you'd like to learn more about attending our upcoming volunteer training and how you can help make a difference, please call 508-548-7999 or visit our website at www.CapeSamaritans.org.
MILITARY, VETERAN AND FAMILY AWARENESS DAY   
The Military, Veteran and Family Awareness Day is scheduled for October 1, 2016, 11 AM - 4 PM at the Hyannis Village Green.
 
Activities include: Barbecue, games, golf clinic, pony rides and music, over 60 Veteran and Military support organizations, holistic therapies, benefits and employment counseling, presentations on the military and veteran experience. View flyer.

Community Impact: Strategic Focus Grants: Requests of $5,000 or more to address strategic initiatives and long-range organizational capacity building.  A Letter of Inquiry (LOI) must be received through the online application system by September 10, 2016Learn more and apply online.

MCV-BCEHO EMS Fund:  This fund supports Emergency Medical Services in the towns of Brewster, Chatham, Eastham, Harwich and Orleans.  Deadline is September 25, 2016 Learn more and apply online.

ELDER SERVICES OF C&I SEEKS VOLUNTEER LONG-TERM CARE OMBUDSMEN
Elder Services of Cape Cod and the Islands is seeking volunteer Long-Term Care Ombudsmen to advocate for residents of nursing and rest homes. Ombudsmen offer residents a way to voice their concerns and to have their issues addressed. When a resident, family member or friend expresses a concern and asks the Ombudsman to assist, the ombudsman works with the resident and facility staff to resolve the issue. Ombudsman volunteers are individuals with compassion and common sense, who give a few hours weekly to help residents live their lives with dignity and respect.
 
Volunteers receive training and support. The next training session will be held October 5 - 7 at the Elder Services offices on Route 134 in South Dennis. Pre-registration is required.

CERTIFIED CRISIS INTERVENTION TEAM COORDINATOR ON NANTUCKET

In an effort to continue improving mental health services on Nantucket, Sergeant Kevin A. Marshall, a 12 year veteran of the Nantucket Police Department, attended the April 2016 Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) International Conference.  Sgt. Marshall became the first Certified CIT Coordinator in the state of Massachusetts.

 

A CIT Coordinator is a law enforcement officer who participates in efforts of assisting, implementing and sustaining CIT as a community program.  The CIT Coordinator serves as a community liaison representing both law enforcement and other community partnerships to the citizens.  Read more.....
