BARNSTABLE COUNTY HUMAN SERVICES SEEKS PREVENTION PROGRAM SPECIALIST

Massachusetts Opioid Abuse Prevention Collaborative

Full-Time Program Specialist

 

Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in public health, social work, human services, behavioral health, or related field.  Minimum of three years experience working on regional initiatives and/or prevention programs.  Knowledge of behavioral health and substance use systems and resources in region.  Must possess, or be willing to obtain, certification as a prevention specialist within two years of hire. NOTICE OF FUNDING AVAILABILITY FOR CAPE & ISLANDS HUD CONTINUUM OF CARE
HUD recently released the Continuum of Care (COC) FY2016 Notice of Funding Availability.  The FY 16 CoC competition is open to renewal and new projects which are scored competitively.  The highest scoring applications will be included in the Cape and Islands Consolidated CoC Application submitted to HUD by September 14,2016.  CoC Competition resources are available at  https://www.hudexchange.info/e-snaps/guides/coc-program-competition-resources/
 
Attached are two document which outline this year's application process and submission of a concept paper for new projects. Concept papers for new projects must be submitted to [email protected] by August 1, 2016.
FUNDING FOR WORKSITE WELLNESS
Working on Wellness offers up to $10,000 in seed funding and expert training to help organizations build a fun and effective wellness initiative unique to their workplace.  Worksite wellness initiatives can lower healthcare spending and lead to healthier, happier and more productive employees.  Any business, non-profit or government entity in Massachusetts is eligible to apply.

CAPE COD HEALTHCARE RELEASES RFP FOR ANNUAL STRATEGIC GRANTS

Friday, July 16, 2016:  Cape Cod Healthcare (CCHC) is pleased to release its FY2017 Annual Strategic Grant Request for Proposals (RFP).  This grant program is open to all non-profit community organizations with qualifying projects that meet at least one of the following guidelines: 

  • Address and positively impact chronic or infectious disease management, and/or
  • Support initiatives targeted at individuals and families facing mental health disorders.

AGING IN PLACE FORUM
Aging in Place forum is scheduled for Monday, July 18, 2016 at 1:30 PM , 528 Forest Rd., West Yarmouth.  Event sponsored by the Town of Yarmouth, Division of Senior Services.

The focus of Aging in Place is to help seniors, as well as people of all ages and all physical abilities to ensure they can stay in the home of their choice, stay connected with family, friends, and neighbors, and to help make their connection to their communities stronger.

The goal is to have a good plan in place that focuses on yourself, your home, your care, and your finances.  These plans should be maintained and reviewed every time as your situation can and will change.  Join in an informational presentation to learn about the three types of needs aging in place encompasses.  Please call 508/394-7606 to save your seat.
WE CAN NEEDS MENTORS IN THE FALMOUTH AND HARWICH PATHMAKERS PROGRAMS

WE CAN has a few spots left for Mentors in both the Falmouth and Harwich PathMakers Programs.  The PathMakers Mentoring Program is a 10-month, supportive program for women in transition.  Mentoring Partners are women who volunteer their services out of a desire to walk with another woman through transition.  Mentors act in a caring and confidential manner, as well as provide gentle and honest reflection of the PathMaker's journey.

FILM SCREENING: UNDER THE BRIDGE: THE CRIMINALIATION OF HOMELESSNESS
Social Action Massachusetts  (SAM), a program of the Massachusetts Housing & Shelter Alliance (MHSA), invites communities of faith and ethical commitment to join them for a free screening of "Under the Bridge: The Criminalization of Homelessness", a documentary film about one summer in Indianapolis, a tent city under a bridge, a man named Maurice, and the criminalization of homelessness in the United States.

This free screening will be held on Tuesday, July 26, 2016, from 6:30 - 8:30 PM at Old South Church  in Boston.  The screening will be followed by a discussion about the film and ways that communities can work together to advocate for permanent solutions to homelessness.
HOME ALONE SAFETY PROGRAM FOR STUDENTS ENTERING GRADES 5, 6, 7 & 8

The Safety Savvy Kids (Home Alone Program) provides tweens and teens with the knowledge to be safe and responsible.  Focusing on inside, outside and environmental safety, students gain the knowledge, reinforcement and independence to be responsible to stay home alone.

 

Program will be held on Saturday, July 30, 2016, 9:30 AM - 12:30 PM at the Cape Cod Community College Hyannis Center, 540 Main St., Hyannis.  Cost is $67.  Register.  For questions contact Mary Conklin at 508/375-5010.

HOPE HOSPICE OFFERS NEW SUPPORT GROUPS AND WORKSHOPS FOR THOSE EXPERIENCING GRIEF OR LOSS
Hope Hospice announced new community bereavement support groups to be held in Brockton, Falmouth and Hyannis beginning in July.  All support groups provide a safe, confidential, supportive setting for anyone experiencing loss or grief.  Programs are led by licensed professionals from Hope Hospice with specialized training and extensive experience.

SUICIDE PREVENTION PROGRAM COMMUNITY ADVISORY BOARD
NEW MEMBERS WANTED
The Massachusetts Department of Public Health Suicide Prevention Program is excited to announce its new Community Advisory Board (CAB).

The mission of the CAB is to provide a way for community members who receive Suicide Prevention Program (SPP) services, as well as people with lived experience with mental health struggles, to give meaningful input into the development of services, programs, and policies that address their needs. The CAB is a unique opportunity to help strengthen SPP services and ensure that they are as accessible, inclusive, and effective as possible.
 
The DPH Suicide Prevention Program is actively seeking new members! If you want to have a voice in suicide prevention services and programs, and have experienced any or all of the following (or know someone who has), we would love to hear from you!

Applications are now being accepted through August 1st, and the first meeting will be held in late August, date and location to be determined. HOUSING ASSISTANCE CORPORATION IS OFFERING FREE HOUSING CONSUMER EDUCATION CENTER CLASSES
Housing Assistance Corporation (HAC) is offering three free classes to the public through its Housing Consumer Education Center (HCEC):  Rebuilding Your Credit, Creating a Budget and Community Resources.  The classes are open to anyone on Cape Cod and the Islands on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Rebuilding Your Credit: August 1, October 24 or November 28, 6-9 PM
  • Creating a Budget: October 17, 6-9 PM
  • Community Resources: November 8, 6-9 PM.

SAMARITANS ON CAPE COD & THE ISLANDS SENIOR OUTREACH VOLUNTEER TRAINING

If you've ever thought about volunteering for Samaritans but are unable to do so due to geographic or time constraints, this may be a wonderful opportunity for you.  Samaritans will be offering a special training in Dennis, MA to prepare individuals to serve as Senior Outreach volunteers.  The Senior Outreach Program is designed to bring volunteers and seniors together via weekly phone calls.  Calls can be made by volunteers from their own home so no travel is required.

 

Training is scheduled for Monday, August 8, 2016, 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM at Elder Services of Cape Cod & the Islands, 68 Route 134, South Dennis.

15th ANNUAL MONICA DICKENS GOLF TOURNAMENT TO BENEFIT THE SAMARITANS ON CAPE COD & THE ISLANDS

The 15th Annual Monica Dickens Golf Tournament will be held on Monday, August 15, 2016 at the Pocasset Golf Club.

 

Cost is $185 for an individual or $740 for a foursome.  Includes golf, cart, lunch and dinner.  Special raffles and silent auction featured.  Registration deadline is August 8, 2016.  Register online at www.CapeSamaritans.org.   View flyer.

HOUSING ASSISTANCE CORPORATION

BIG FIX - BREWSTER 2016

The Big Fix is a community service event coordinated by Housing Assistance Corporation.  You can help local seniors, veterans, and disabled homeowners with clean-up, landscaping, and small home repair projects at the Big Fix this fall.  This one-day volunteer opportunity is perfect for families and teens to work together. 

 

Each year, the Big Fix focuses on a different town.  This year the town is Brewster and project will take place on Saturday, September 17th. Sign up to be a Big Fix recipient or volunteer.  More information.

MILITARY, VETERAN AND FAMILY AWARENESS DAY

Save the Date

 

The Military, Veteran and Family Awareness Day is scheduled for October 1, 2016, 11 AM - 4 PM at the Hyannis Village Green and South Street Armory.

 

On the Green: Barbecue, games, golf clinic, pony rides and music.

 

In the Armory:  Over 70 Veteran and Military support organizations, holistic therapies, benefits and employment counseling, presentations on the military and veteran experience. 

COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTER OF CAPE COD HIRES BEHAVIORAL HEALTH CLINICIANS
Community Health Center of Cape Cod has hired two behavioral health clinicians with years' of experience working in a variety of individual, couples and family therapy.  Community Health Center of Cape Cod is a complete medical home that offers primary care, behavioral health and dental services as well as a full service pharmacy and optometry services.  Behavioral health services at the Health Center includes information and referral to specialty services, mental health and addiction assessments, depression screenings, child and adult psychiatry, and individual, couples and family treatment to patients.  Read press release.
