SHINE Welcomes 12 New Volunteer Counselors

On June 16, 2016, the Cape and Islands Regional SHINE office certified 12 new volunteer SHINE counselors.  They attended a rigorous training to become certified by the Massachusetts Executive Office of Elder Affairs in the various options available to Medicare beneficiaries-including Medicare Parts A & B, Medicare Advantage (Part C), Medicare prescription drug coverage (Part D), Medigap, Prescription Advantage, MassHealth, and other programs that help people with limited resources pay for health care costs.

NAMI CAPE COD & THE ISLANDS OFFERS FAMILY TO FAMILY SESSIONS

National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Cape Cod & the Islands is offering a Family to Family, 12 session education course for the families, friends, significant others or caregivers of adults living with mental illness.  The course is designed to help participants understand and support their loved one living with mental illness while maintaining their own well-being.  Thousands of families describe the program as life-changing.  Topics include: specific mental illnesses and their symptoms, medications and brain biology, coping skills, crisis and relapse.

 

Course will begin on Tuesday, June 28, 2016, 6-8:30 PM and continue for 12 sessions at the Pocasset Behavioral Health Center.  Registration is required.  For information or registration call 508/778-4277 or email info@namicapecod.org.

DUFFY HEALTH CENTER ORGANIZES "CHRISTMAS IN JULY" DRIVE TO BENEFIT HOMELESS ON CAPE COD
Duffy Health Center will be collecting items to help people who are homeless and those at risk of being homeless stay safe in the heat this summer. Donations of small packages of sunscreen, new t-shirts and underwear, deodorant, and boxes of granola bars are welcome. Cash donations will be used for the purchase of backpacks. Checks made out to Duffy Health Center and other items can be dropped off June 15-July 15 at the reception desk in the lobby of Duffy Health Center, 94 Main Street Hyannis, Monday - Friday, 8 AM - 5 PM.  Read more.....
CAPE ORGANIZATION FOR RIGHTS OF DISABLED (CORD) OFFERS TRANSITIONAL INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
CORD is beginning another session of its Transitional Internship Program (TIP). If you are between the ages of 16 and 21, have a disability, live in the mid Cape area, are currently in high school and have never worked before - this program is for you. CORD will provide pre-employment skills training and placement in a paid internship for at least twelve hours a week for seven weeks. CORD needs job coaches! Do you have some time starting in July to help a youth with a disability in his/her first job?  CORD's Transitional Internship Program (TIP) needs you! Participants will work at least 12 hours per week for at least 7 weeks. Job coaches will be paid $15 per hour and may work with more than one participant if the schedules allow. Internships will be mostly in the mid Cape area. Call CORD to apply or for more information: 508-775-8300.

In partnership with the Town of Wellfleet and in cooperation with the Local Housing Partnership, the Wellfleet Housing Authority is soliciting quotes from willing service providers.

AIDS SUPPORT GROUP OF CAPE COD

8th ANNUAL PROVINCETOWN 5K RUN/WALK

On Sunday, July 17, 2016 the AIDS Support Group of Cape Cod will hold the 8th Annual Provincetown 5K Run/Walk.  The run or walk will begin at the far East end to the Provincetown Inn in the far West end.  Registration fee includes a New Balance running shirt and a great breakfast at the finish line.  Registration begins at 7:00 AM at the Harbor Hotel, race begins at 8:30 AM.

WHAT'S NEW - UPDATES ON MEDICATIONS USED IN PARKINSON'S DISEASE
The Parkinson Support Network of Cape Cod/APDA MA Branch will sponsor a free education program addressing new medications used in the treatment of Parkinson's Disease.  The program will be presented by Dr. Anna Hohler, a movement disorder specialist from the Boston University Medical Campus.  The program is designed for individuals with Parkinson's Disease, family members, care providers and interested community members.  The program will be held on Friday, July 22, 2016, 11 AM - 12:30 PM at the YMCA Cape Cod, 2245 Iyannough Road, West Barnstable.

NOTICE OF FUNDING AVAILABILITY FOR FALMOUTH HOMELESS
Town of Falmouth Human Services Committee has some funds available to partner with an organization to shelter homeless folks in Falmouth for the winter months of December 1, 2016 - March 15, 2017.  Read more....

Applications must be submitted to Falmouth Human Services no later than August 8, 2016.  A clear plan to provide shelter for up to 12 homeless individuals from Falmouth must be included.

FOR WOMEN

Join Team Cape Cod Center for Women for the New Balance Falmouth Road Race (NBFRR) on August 21, 2016.  Three bibs still available.  If you want to run you will have to act quickly to have your name printed on your bib.  You will need to register with NBFRR by Friday, July 1, 2016.  Each runner must commit to raising $1,500 for the fight against domestic violence.

OPEN CHARITY GOLF TOURNAMENT

Time to register your foursome and/or become a sponsor for the 2nd Annual Open Charity Golf Tournament to benefit Independence House to provide free and confidential services to children, teens, adults and their families who are members of our community on Cape Cod, and who are survivors of, or have been affected by domestic or sexual violence.

 

Tournament will be held on Monday, August 22, 2016 at 12:00 PM, Dinner at 5:30 PM. Player entry is $150 per player/$600 for a foursome.  Includes carts, post tournament cocktail, awards dinner, swag.  Hole in one contests, Pin contests, silent auction, raffles, and more. More information.  Register online for players and sponsors.

SPECIAL OPPORTUNITY AT BOSTON UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF PUBLIC HEALTH
Boston University MPH degree beginning this Fall of 2016. Our admissions office will waive the GRE requirement with a minimum of two years of public health experience. In addition, scholarship opportunities are available including merit based awards and eligibility for our Community Scholars Program. We had a great response to our full-time schedule this fall and are now looking to fill some open seats in our part-time program to round out our incoming class.
 
The BU MPH program utilizes an innovative 21st-century curriculum, implementing programs that provide more skill-building courses for graduate-level students and an in -depth focus on the needs of growing industries. We know earning a graduate degree requires flexibility so we offer all of our required courses within a part-time format for working professionals.

MATURE WORKERS PROGRAM AT ELDER SERVICES OF CAPE COD & THE ISLANDS
Mature Workers Program Now Enrolling
 
The Mature Workers Program at Elder Services of Cape Cod and the Islands has immediate openings for income-eligible seniors 55+ who want to return to the workplace. Each year, the program helps dozens of individuals in transition due to job loss, relocation, family illness or another reason by providing them with a paid internship at a local non-profit or government agency. Individuals enrolled in the program work 20 hours per week and have opportunities to learn new skills while they accrue a relevant work history and professional network.  
 
The Mature Workers Program is part of the Department of Labor funded Senior Community Service Employment Program. For more information or to enroll, call 508-394-4630 x 543 or 540.
 
COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTER OF CAPE COD OFFERS VIDEO INTERPRETING SERVICES
Community Health Center of Cape Cod is offering video interpreting services to our patients with limited English speaking proficiency and/or hearing impairments at their three locations in Falmouth, Mashpee and Bourne.  The Health Center has added these services to ensure that patients with limited English speaking proficiency and/or hearing impairments are able to access, understand and participate in their health care.  Read more.....

FAMILY RESOURCE CENTER

The July editions of the Cape Cod Family Resource Center Newsletter, the list of Parent Education and Support Opportunities on and near Cape Cod are available for viewing.

The Center is bringing back the popular Active Parenting of Teens program (six Tuesday evenings beginning July 19th and also launching a Free Food Program to offer a free nutritious lunch to anyone under 18, Monday - Friday, 12 Noon to 1 PM at the Center, 29 Bassett Lane, Hyannis.  This program is thanks to Project Bread and in partnership with the YMCA Cape Cod.
