Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in public health, social work, human services, behavioral health, or related field; minimum of three years' experience working on regional initiatives and/or prevention programs. Knowledge of behavioral health and substance use systems and resources in region. Must possess, or be willing to obtain, certification as a prevention specialist within two years of hire. Annual salary $54,042.69.

REGIONAL SUBSTANCE ABUSE COUNCIL PUBLISHES ISSUE BRIEF #3

The Barnstable County Department of Human Services is producing a series of issue briefs that will present factual information on an array of topics related to substance use.  
 
"Issue Brief 3: MA Ballot Initiative: The Regulation and Taxation of Marijuana Act" explores the ballot initiative process in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and will examine some of the specific issues presented by The Regulation and Taxation of Marijuana Initiative, a potential question on the 2016 ballot.

NEWS FROM SHINE

Serving the Health Insurance Needs of Everyone

Barnstable County's SHINE Program Received a $25,000 Community Benefits Grant from Cape Cod Healthcare to support health insurance counseling and assistance to Barnstable County residents. Each year, Cape Cod Healthcare's Community Benefits program awards grants to community organizations that address the unmet health needs of financially disadvantaged and underserved populations of Barnstable County.

50 highly trained SHINE counselors work 1:1 with seniors, people with disabilities and their families to provide Medicare beneficiaries accurate information in order to better understand the complexities of private and public health insurance.  Read more....   

State certified SHINE counselors are available throughout the region at local Councils on Aging, Community Health Centers and the Regional SHINE office.  Call you local Senior Center to make an appointment with a SHINE counselor or call the Cape & Islands Regional SHINE office at 508/375-6762.  View the SHINE brochure with locations and telephone numbers to schedule an appointment.

NAVIGATORS TRAINED TO HELP ACCESS HEALTH INSURANCE   
Community Action Committee of Cape Cod & Islands is a Massachusetts Health Connector Navigator Organization.  They have MA Health Connector Navigators trained to help you access health insurance.  To schedule an appointment or for more information call 508/771-1727 or walk-in at 372 North St. Hyannis.  Services also offered in Falmouth and on Nantucket, by appointment only.  Read more.....

CACCI's Navigators have been trained to assist Verizon workers who are on strike and losing their health insurance as of 5/1.

Beginning April 21, 2016 MassHealth will be sending notices indicating when you need to renew and steps you may need to take.  Please note deadlines for renewals.  Read more.....

CAPE COD FAMILY RESOURCE CENTER MONTHLY JUNE NEWS

The June editions of the Cape Cod Family Resource Center Newsletter and list of Parent Education and Support Opportunities on and near Cape Cod are ready and waiting.  Lots of great information in each to share with staff, colleagues and families you support.

 

Exciting programs at the Cape Cod Family Resource Center this month include a Grandparents Helping Grandparents Support Group, a four-session Infant Massage Class for new parents/caregivers and two Social Groups, one for 'Tweens and one for younger kids.

1ST ANNUAL BSU CAPE COD FINANCIAL LITERACY CONFERENCE

BUILDING YOUR NEUROBIOLOGY TOOLKIT WITH SURVIVORS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
This noncredit training event will offer 5 CEs for licensed social workers but is open to all.  The training will be held at Bridgewater State University Cape Cod on Thursday, June 9, 2016, 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM.  Registration is at 8:30 AMRegister online.  Fee is $100 per person.

TOWN OF BARNSTABLE SEEKS

HOMELESS OUTREACH COORDINATOR

The Town of Barnstable's Chief Procurement Officer, in coordination with the Town Manager's Office and the Town Council Subcommittee to Assess Homelessness, is soliciting grant applications from qualified individuals to effectively coordinate the town-wide provision of services for people who are homeless in order to mitigate chronic homelessness. 

 

The Outreach Coordinator, as a grant funded contracted service, is a new function to the Town of Barnstable and therefore is anticipated to be an adaptive relationship between the Town and its' Outreach Coordinator.   Read the complete Request for Grant ApplicationsView instructions.

WORLD ELDER ABUSE AWARENESS DAY

HEALING FROM LOSS: SPOUSAL AND PARTNER EDUCATION SERVICES & SUPPORT GROUP
This grief educational series and support group for adults is open to anyone who has lost a spouse, life partner, parent, sibling, family member or close friend.  This group will offer a safe and supportive place for individuals to receive education on the grief process, to share your experience of loss with others and move toward healing and hope in a confidential and supportive environment.  This 8 session group will be offered on Thursdays, 3-4:30 PM beginning June 16, 2016.  First 2 sessions available for drop-in.

This Support group is offered by Beacon Hospice and will meet at the Brewster Women's Library in Brewster, MA.  Pre-registration is recommended.  For more information and to pre-register call 508/778-1622. View flyer.
BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB GALA EVENT
Join the Boys and Girls Club for the Gala Event of the Spring and support 963 Cape Cod children.  The event will be held on Thursday, June 16, 2016 at 5:30 PM at the Coonamessett Inn, Falmouth, MA.  The Club will honor the Boys and Girls Club 2016 Youth of the year and enjoy live music, great food, silent auction and prizes.

SEMINAR FOR GRANDPARENTS RAISING GRANDCHILDREN

QUESTION, PERSUADE (QPR) CERTIFICATION TRAINING

On Friday, June 24, 2016, 8:30 - 4:00 PM, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health Suicide Prevention Program is sponsoring a train-the-trainer certification training by the nationally recognized QPR Institute.  This certification prepares instructors to teach QPR for Suicide Prevention to members of their community. 

 

The usual cost of this certification training is $400 per person.  The DPH Suicide Prevention Program is underwriting the cost and offering it free of charge in exchange for participants who receive certification agreeing to train a minimum of 25 gatekeepers within 12 months of course completion.  Click her for more information and to register.

APPLIED SUICIDE INTERVENTION SKILLS TRAINING (ASIST)
ASIST training will be held on June 27 & 28, 2016, 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM at Cape Cod Community College, 2240 Iyannough Rd., West Barnstable.  Cost is $125 per person (discounted with assistance from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and the Cape & Islands Suicide Prevention Coalition.)

ASIST is a two day intensive, interactive and practice-dominated course designed to teach suicide first-aid to help a person at risk stay safe and seek further help as needed.  View flyer for more information.  Registration form.

NEWS FROM THE CAPE & ISLANDS SUICIDE PREVENTION COALITION
The CISPC will be holding a QPR training at their next general Meeting on Thursday July 14, 2016 from 11:15 - 12:45 in the Harborview Conference Room located in the Barnstable County Complex, 3195 Main St. (Rt 6A), Barnstable.  More info to follow.

The Cape & Islands Suicide Prevention Coalition offers different types of trainings to the community.  To learn more click here for an overview and also check out the new website.  If you know of a local organization or community group that would like to schedule a training please contact Joan McDonald, Training and Events Coordinator.

The New Balance Falmouth Road Race will host 12,000 elite and recreational runners on its seaside course on August 21st. CISPC has a few bib numbers left so this could be your chance to run.  You just have to be willing to do a bit of fundraising for a really good cause - the Cape & Islands Suicide Prevention Coalition!  Funds raised support free suicide prevention trainings across the Cape and Islands.

BRIDGEWATER STATUE UNIVERSITY CAPE COD - ARTS FOR YOUTH SUMMER PROGRAM
BSU Cape Cod Arts for Youth Summer Multi-Arts Program 2016 is for children ages 7-12 and will be held at the BSU campus 1175 Route 28, South Yarmouth.  The program will offer children the opportunity to participate in visual arts, dance, music and creative computing classes under the direction of the professors of the BSU Department of Theater..  Two one-week sessions will be held August 15-19 and August 22 - 26, Monday - Friday, 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM.  Tuition is $175 per session, or $300 for both sessions.  Tuition includes camp t-shirt and all materials.
