RESULTS OF 2016 ANNUAL POINT IN TIME HOMELESS COUNT RELEASED
The Cape and Islands Regional Network on Homelessness has released its 2016 findings from the Annual Point in Time count which took place on January 27, 2016.  The number of homeless families and individuals on the night of the count was 394, an increase of 38 persons from the 2015 count.  The Point in Time count documented an increase in the number of unsheltered and sheltered individuals compared to 2015.

Point in Time (PIT) counts cover all people experiencing homelessness in emergency shelters, transitional housing, on the street, in cars, abandoned buildings, and in other places not meant for human habitation.  Counts are conducted annually in every community, and are required b the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).  The PIT does not count households living in motels nor those that are doubled-up and living with family and friends.

This week HUD awarded two new Continuum of Care (CoC) grants to the region in addition to the CoC funding awarded to the Cape and Islands in March.  Total CoC funding to the region in 2015 is over $1.9 million dollars.  A full breakdown of the data collected and a complete list of CoC FY15 funded projects are available at www.bchumanservices.netRead more.....

PRESIDENT OBAMA SIGNS THE OLDER AMERICANS ACT
On Tuesday, April 19, 2016, President Obama showed the Administration's commitment to older Americans by signing into law the Older Americans Act, which he had urged Congress to reauthorize last summer.

The Older Americans Act funds a wide array of programs that are crucial to addressing poverty among older adults.  Low income seniors with few other resources rely on those programs to age safely and with dignity.  Many of these programs form the backbone that holds everyday life together for millions of low-income older adults and their families.

These include programs that transport older adults to doctor appointments and senior centers, meal delivery that reaches isolated seniors, and crucially, legal services attorneys who provide free and low cost services to help seniors assess the benefits to which they are entitled, stay in their homes, and fight fraud and abuse.
