DEPARTMENT NEWS
  HUD Awards Over $1.6 million
for Cape and Islands Homeless Programs
 
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced the 2015 Continuum of Care (CoC) competition funding awards.  The Cape and Islands received $1,682,047 million dollars in funding to support twelve renewal programs that provide housing to over 140 formerly homeless individuals. 
The region also received grants to support CoC Planning and the Homeless Information Management System (HMIS).  This year's award is a 12% increase over last year's CoC funding.  A second round of CoC funding for new and tier two projects is expected to be announced in the near future.  Read more.....

Every day there are thousands of baby boomers turning 65 and are now eligible for Medicare.  Those new to Medicare can make costly mistakes resulting in higher health care costs, gaps in coverage and possibly a lifetime late enrollment penalty.  Read more...

 

State certified SHINE counselors are trained regarding the enrollment rules that may apply to your personal situation and your personal coverage choices.  Call your local Senior Center to make an appointment with a SHINE counselor or call the Cape & Islands Regional SHINE office at 508/375-6762.

FREE TAX PREPARATION
Community Action Committee of Cape Cod & Islands is offering FREE Federal and MA State tax preparation to eligible individuals at CACCI, 372 North St., Hyannis.  Call to schedule an appointment for 2015 Tax Prep Season at 508/771-1727.  View flyer for additional details.
ADDITIONAL FUEL ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE TO ELIGIBLE DENNIS RESIDENTS
If you have been approved for fuel assistance and live in the Town of Dennis, you may qualify for extra help for heat utilities up to $300.00, or a tank of oil for consumers of all ages from the Town of Dennis.  Eligibility requirements.
 
If you have not applied for the State/Federal Fuel Assistance through South Shore Community Action in Plymouth and you feel you need fuel assistance, please call Marion Prendergast at 508/694-2004 to schedule an appointment.
ACCESS TO HEALTH INSURANCE INFORMATION

Community Action Committee of Cape Cod & Islands is a Massachusetts Health Connector Navigator Organization.  They have navigators training to help you access health insurance.  You can apply and enroll in Mass Health.  If you are newly eligible for ConnectorCare Plans you can apply and enroll.  You may qualify for a special enrollment period with qualifying life events.  View flyer for more information.

CAPE & ISLANDS VETERANS OUTREACH CENTER SEEKS BEHAVIORAL HEALTH COUNSELOR
Immediate Opening: Veterans Behavioral Health Counselor at the Veterans Outreach Center in Hyannis.  This part time, 16 hour/week  behavioral health counselor will work with veterans exhibiting the symptoms of post-traumatic stress or high levels of anxiety as a result of their military experience.

Qualifications: Master's Degree in related field, experience working with veterans, veteran status preferred but not required.

VNA PREVENTION & WELLNESS TRUST FUND GRANT: SEEKS INTERVENTIONS OUTREACH, PROGRAM LEADER
The Visiting Nurses Association is seeking an Interventions Outreach Program Leader for the Prevention & Wellness Trust Fund Grant program.  Part-time position is 22.5 hours per week.  Candidate will work effectively with individuals (staff, clients, physicians, clinical partners) from diverse backgrounds in reducing cultural and socio-economic barriers between clients and institutions.

Qualifications: Health and social work experience and education required.  Strong leadership potential in evidence-based programs.  Ability to work independently as a professional.  Current Massachusetts drivers license and auto insurance required.  Excellent written and verbal communications skills.  Bi-lingual Portuguese/Spanish speaker.  Apply online at www.indeed.com.

NEWS FROM THE MASHPEE SENIOR CENTER
Do you need a shingles vaccine?  The VNA of Cape Cod is currently accepting appointments at their Dennis office on Route 134 for participants 50 years of age and older.  Contact VNA's Public Health & Wellness at 508/957-7423.

Do you or someone you know need assistance in providing pet food?  Cape Cod Disaster Animal Response Team (CCDART) has been collecting pet food and will be distributing it to those in need at the following locations: Saturday, March 12, 1-3 PM, Federated Church in Hyannis and Saturday, March 26, 1-3 PM at Stop & Shop in Hyannis.  CCDART also graciously accepts donations to help those in need.

Van Service:  The Mashpee Senior Center offers door-to-door van service to local towns for shopping and doctors' appointments.  Call 508/539-1440 at least 24 hours in advance for availability.

COMMUNITY FORUM: SUBSTANCE ABUSE AND MENTAL HEALTH IN THE WORKPLACE

The Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce is committed to being a part of the solution and creating partnership opportunities to continue to address substance abuse on Cape Cod.

 

On Tuesday, March 15th, 7:30 - 9:00 AM, the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce, 5 Patti Page Way, Centerville will serve as host to the Cape Cod Community College's Center for Corporate and Professional Education (CCPE) as they present "Substance Abuse and Mental Health in the Workplace: Awareness, Prevention and Intervention Solutions for the Employer".  The CCPE will offer a presentation on their 3-part workshop series about substance abuse and mental health in the workplace.  The presentation's focus is squarely on employers - how to raise awareness and understanding among staff and how to prevent and manage these issues in the workplace.

HARWICH BUY DOWN PROGRAM LOTTERY
The Housing Assistance Corporation is now accepting applications for the Harwich Buy Down Program LotteryInformation Session will be held at the Harwich Community Center, 100 Oak St., Harwich on Tuesday, March 22nd at 5:30 PM.

Two grants of up to $75,000 will be awarded by lottery to a first time homebuyer for the purchase of their first home.  Application deadline: Friday, April 29th by 5:00 PM.  Applications must be returned to Housing Assistance Corporation, 460 W. 2016 HOPEHEALTH WALK FOR ALZHEIMER'S

TOWN OF BARNSTABLE

NOTICE OF FUND AVAILABILITY (NOFA) COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT BLOCK GRANT (CDBG) PROGRAM

The Town of Barnstable Growth Management Department (CMD) is the lead agency for the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and is pleased to announce the availability of CDBG funds.

The Town is expecting to receive $274,347 of CDBG funds plus any carryover funds to be available during the 2016 program year.  Funds can be used for eligible projects that occur between July 1, 2016 and June 30, 2017 and benefit income eligible residents.  Funds for public service activities are limited to 15% of the allocation or about $41,000.

SPAULDING'S 9th ANNUAL PEDIATRIC LECTURE SERIES

PUBLIC HEARING NOTICE 

The Area Agency on Aging Advisory Council of Elder Services of Cape Cod and the Islands, Inc. will hold a Public Hearing on Thursday, April 14, 2016 from 10:30 AM to 12 Noon at the Dennis Police Department Community Room, 90 Bob Crowell Rd, South Dennis, MA to receive public comment on the needs of elderly residents and their caregivers in Barnstable, Dukes, and Nantucket Counties.

2016 MASSACHUSETTS OUTSTANDING COMMUNITY HEALTH WORKER'S AWARDS

The Massachusetts Association of Community Health Workers (MACHW) wants to recognize and honor the outstanding service, dedication, and excellence of individuals and groups of individuals who serve their communities as Community Health Workers (CHW).  To honor those efforts, MACHW has four awards:

Employers Take Note!  Massachusetts Working on Wellness (WoW) Funding Opportunity
 
Massachusetts Working on Wellness (WoW) supports employers in implementing comprehensive evidence-based worksite health initiatives.  The program provides employers with expert training, technical assistance, an on-line learning community, and seed funding to help offset the cost of starting a wellness program.

MASSACHUSETTS YOUTH LEADERSHIP FORUM
Partners for Youth with Disabilities are takeing the lead in organizing the 2016 Youth Leadership Forum (YLF).  Youth and young adults are encouraged to apply as Delegates & Peer Leaders.
 
If you are working with a high school student who will benefit from a 3 day overnight event offering leadership, employment, assistive technology, and advocacy workshops OR a young adult (post high school) looking to flex their leadership qualities (plus receive a stipend!), please let them know about this opportunity.  This is for any young adult in the Commonwealth under the age of 26!  The application is attached.  The application deadline is May 6th, 2016.
 
The Youth Leadership Forum will take place at Bridgewater State University from Tuesday, July 12th to Thursday, July 14th  (For peer leaders, it will be an extra day starting on Monday, July 11th to Thursday, July 14th).

OUT OF SCHOOL YOUTH PROGRAM SERVICES
The Cape & Islands Workforce Investment Board (WIB) through the Job Training and Employment Corporation (JTEC) is seeking referrals for the Cape Cod Young Adults (CCYA) Achieving Success Program.  This program services out of school youth between the ages of 16 and 24 who must meet eligibility guidelines.

The program includes: HiSet certification preparation (the new "GED"), paid and unpaid work experience, on the job training, occupational skills training, support services, comprehensive guidance and counseling, and help in finding and retaining employment.  The Request for Proposals is available on the Career Opportunities website at www.capejobs.comRead more.....  This RFP is open for referrals through October 31, 2016.

          CAPE COD HOARDING TASK FORCE   

Meetings of the Cape Cod Hoarding Task Force are held the last Thursday of every other month.  2016 meeting dates are2/25, 4/28, 6/30, 8/25, 10/27 and 12/29 at the Dennis Police Department, 90 Bob Crowell Rd., South Dennis.  These meetings are geared towards professionals who work with individuals with hoarding disorder in any capacity.  For more information about meetings or for assistance and resources email info@hoardingcapecod.org or visit the Cape Cod Hoarding Task Force website.

SAMARITAN SURVIVOR SUPPORT GROUPS

Over 800,000 people worldwide end their lives annually leaving family and close friends who deeply feel the devastation of each loss.  Samaritans on Cape Cod & the Islands has survivor support groups in Falmouth and Hyannis to provide unconditional emotional support, help survivors gain courage and comfort from one another, and deal with a unique grief that is often not understood by others.  For more information contact the Samaritans office at Tel: 508/548-7999

VETERANS CRISIS HOTLINE

The Veterans Crisis Line (1-800-273-8255, Press 1) is available 24/7/365 to provide confidential counseling and referrals for Veterans and their families.  This is an integrated national outreach effort to increase awareness and use of the Veterans Crisis Line, support and promote broader VA suicide prevention efforts, and promote help-seeking behaviors among Veterans at risk of suicide and other mental health problems. 

MASS 2-1-1 RESOURCE LOCATOR
MASS 2-1-1 is a free, confidential, 24/7 information and referral database and hotline for access to health and human services for consumers and providers.  Multi-lingual translations are also available.  To locate services dial 211 or 1-877-211-MASS on your telephone or go to www.mass211help.org
