Goodbye Old Website - Welcome New Website!

 

The Barnstable County Department of Human Services has redesigned our website for easier access to the unbiased information and reliable services of the Department. Can I change my Medicare Plan after Open Enrollment?

 

Even though Medicare's Annual Open Enrollment ended on 12/7/15 (that's the period in which you can change your Medicare Part D Drug Plan or Medicare Advantage Plan Part C) you may still have some options.  Read more.....

 

State certified SHINE counselors are trained regarding the enrollment rules that may apply to your personal situation and your personal coverage choices.  Call your local Senior Center to make an appointment with a SHINE counselor or call the Cape & Islands Regional SHINE office at 508/375-6762.

FREE TAX PREPARATION
Community Action Committee of Cape Cod & Islands is offering FREE Federal and MA State tax preparation to eligible individuals at CACCI, 372 North St., Hyannis.  Call to schedule an appointment for 2015 Tax Prep Season at 508/771-1727.  View flyer for additional details.
ADDITIONAL FUEL ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE TO ELIGIBLE DENNIS RESIDENTS
If you have been approved for fuel assistance and live in the Town of Dennis, you may qualify for extra help for heat utilities up to $300.00, or a tank of oil for consumers of all ages from the Town of Dennis.  Read eligibility requirements.
 
If you have not applied for the State/Federal Fuel Assistance through South Shore Community Action in Plymouth and you feel you need fuel assistance, please call Marion Prendergast at 508/694-2004 to schedule an appointment.
ADULT LEARNER INFORMATION SESSIONS AT CAPE COD COMMUNITY COLLEGE

View the attached flyer for dates/times of the Spring 2016 semester Adult Learner Information Sessions that are held regularly at Cape Cod Community College.  These hour-long sessions are designed to help adults who are thinking about returning to college.

2016 GERONTOLOGY INTENSIVE
WORKSHOP SERIES
If you are a professional currently working with older adults or exploring gerontology as a career choice, this certificate series is for you.  Attached is a listing of workshops  in the 2016 Gerontology Intensive Workshop Series which will start in March. 
 
The 10 Workshop Certificate Series will run from March 23 - May 25, 2016 from 5-7 PM at the Cape Cod Community College Hyannis Center, 540 Main Street and Bonus Workshops will be on June 1 and June 8.  CEUs & CECs will be offered to nurses and social workers for workshops 1-10 only.  For workshop topics, dates and fees Read more.....

REGIONAL JOB NETWORKING GROUP FOR PEOPLE 50 YEARS AND OLDER

Participating in this networking program on a regular basis will give you the many tools and strategies you will need for your job search. The program is open to any person who is 50+ and resides in MA. The group leader is Bill Lippincott, principal of Lippincott Consulting, specializing in private professional outplacement and general management consulting. Bill has a 30 year background as a hiring manager for large organizations and incorporates this knowledge in helping job seekers to acquire the skills and strategies necessary for an effective job search in today's dynamic hiring environment.

GOING BLIND ~ COMING OUT OF THE DARK ABOUT VISION LOSS

4TH ANNUAL CAPE COD WHITE RIBBON DAY
Independence House, Inc. in collaboration with the Yarmouth Police Department and the Cape and Islands District Attorney's Office bring an international effort to Cape Cod for a fourth year.  White Ribbon Day is a campaign that calls on men and boys to stand up in solidarity, wear a white ribbon and take a pledge saying NO to violence against women and girls.

ELDER SERVICES OF CAPE COD & ISLANDS

MONEY MANAGEMENT PROGRAM

Elder Services of Cape Cod and the Islands is currently seeking volunteers for their Money Management Program. 

This program is a free service which promotes independent living by assisting income eligible seniors, aged sixty and older, who may be at risk of losing their independence due to failure to pay rent, utility or other basic bills on time.  Volunteers are trained to provide in-home money management services to clients.  Please contact Marsha Whittaker, Program Manager at marsha.whittaker@escci.org for more information.
CAPE COD WANDERER PROGRAM

The Cape Cod Wanderer Program is currently being developed by the Yarmouth Police Community Advisory Team (YPCAT) along with the Yarmouth Police Department and hopes to expand across the entire Cape.  The program requires an authorized family member to complete the registration form that provides vital information about an individual with potential to wander.  The information and current photo would be kept on file at the local police department and could be shared with other police departments if the resident is visiting outside their town.

 

The goal of the program is to provide a free program to residents funded by the Yarmouth Police Foundation who raises funds to help offset any costs associated with this program.

C&I SUICIDE PREVENTION COALITION SEEKS OFFICE & TRAINING COORDINATOR
The office and training coordinator will be responsible for, but not limited to:  assisting the Steering Committee with planning and coordination of Coalition-sponsored activities, community forums, and other special events, planning and coordinating general membership meetings, planning and coordinating suicide prevention, intervention and post-vention trainings, creating opportunities for suicide prevention trainings, public education initiatives, collaborations, and strengthening of C&I resources pertaining to suicide awareness and prevention.  View full job description.

CAPE & ISLANDS VETERANS OUTREACH CENTER COUNSELOR OPENING
The Cape and Islands Veterans Outreach Center is seeking a part-time counselor to work with veterans exhibiting the symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress or high levels of anxiety as a result of their military experience.

Qualifications: Masters Degree in Related Field, experience working with veterans, Veteran status preferred but not required.

Hours:  Approximately 16 hours per week.

GALE FUND GRANT OPPORTUNITY
The Cape Cod Foundation is pleased to announce an opportunity for grants through the Gay and Lesbian Equity (GALE) Fund.  The application process id entirely online, and proposals must be received by midnight on Friday, March 25th.

The goal of the GALE Fund grants program is to encourage informed, relevant, collaborative and effective programming about LGBTQ issues, responding to the most pressing needs identified by the community.  $7,500 has been allocated in 2016 to fund activities and programs focusing on Equal/Human/Civil Rights, Youth and Elders, Health Care, Arts and Culture, and Education in the areas of LGBTQ community issues and services on Cape Cod and the Islands.  Learn more and apply online.  Questions about the grant process can be referred to Dara Bryan  at the Cape Cod Foundation.

LGBT ALZHEIMER'S & DEMENTIA

CAREGIVER SUPPORT GROUP

The Barnstable Senior Center is pleased to announce a new LGBT Alzheimer's & Dementia Caregiver Support Group to start in February.  This program is designed specifically to support LGBT people who are caregivers for someone with memory impairment.  This support group will provide an opportunity for LGBT caregivers to share in a safe and welcoming environment, and receive information and guidance regarding care planning strategies.

 

The group will meet the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of each month from 3-4:30 PM at the Barnstable Senior Center, 825 Falmouth Rd., Hyannis.  Respite care is available for those in need.  To register, or for more information, please contact Donna Burns at donna-marie.Burns@town.barnstable.ma.us or 508/862-4753.

          CAPE COD HOARDING TASK FORCE   

Meetings of the Cape Cod Hoarding Task Force are held the last Thursday of every other month.  2016 meeting dates are2/25, 4/28, 6/30, 8/25, 10/27 and 12/29 at the Dennis Police Department, 90 Bob Crowell Rd., South Dennis.  These meetings are geared towards professionals who work with individuals with hoarding disorder in any capacity.  For more information about meetings or for assistance and resources email info@hoardingcapecod.org or visit the Cape Cod Hoarding Task Force website.

SAMARITAN SURVIVOR SUPPORT GROUPS

Over 800,000 people worldwide end their lives annually leaving family and close friends who deeply feel the devastation of each loss.  Samaritans on Cape Cod & the Islands has survivor support groups in Falmouth and Hyannis to provide unconditional emotional support, help survivors gain courage and comfort from one another, and deal with a unique grief that is often not understood by others.  For more information contact the Samaritans office at Tel: 508/548-7999

VETERANS CRISIS HOTLINE

The Veterans Crisis Line (1-800-273-8255, Press 1) is available 24/7/365 to provide confidential counseling and referrals for Veterans and their families.  This is an integrated national outreach effort to increase awareness and use of the Veterans Crisis Line, support and promote broader VA suicide prevention efforts, and promote help-seeking behaviors among Veterans at risk of suicide and other mental health problems. 

MASS 2-1-1 RESOURCE LOCATOR
MASS 2-1-1 is a free, confidential, 24/7 information and referral database and hotline for access to health and human services for consumers and providers.  Multi-lingual translations are also available.  To locate services dial 211 or 1-877-211-MASS on your telephone or go to www.mass211help.org
  
The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) has designated Mass 2-1-1 as the official point of contact for receiving information during a time of crisis or weather emergency.
