Even though Medicare's Annual Open Enrollment ended on 12/7/15 (that's the period in which you can change your Medicare Part D Drug Plan or Medicare Advantage Plan Part C) you may still have some options.  Read more.....

AARP Volunteer Tax Preparation: for SIMPLE Tax returns for low and middle income taxpayers.  If you own rental property or have other complex issues, please understand that you will have to make other arrangement.  Appointments will be taken beginning on January 19, 2016 by calling 508/862-4750.

Caregiver Support Program of Elder Services of CC&I:

TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE PARTNERSHIP

FOR PREVENTION

The Executive Office of the President, Office of National Drug Control Policy and the Department of Health and Human Services has recently released the FY16 Drug Free Communities (DFC) Grant Solicitation.  This federal grant program provides up to $125,000 per year for up to 5 years. 

 

The goals of the program are to 1) establish and strengthen community collaboration and 2) to reduce substance use among youth, age 18 and under.  A DFC Grant workshop is scheduled for January 20, 3-5 PM at the Plymouth County Sheriff's Media Conference Room in the Administration Building, 24 Long Pond Rd, Plymouth.  Read more.....

GUIDING GOOD CHOICES WORKSHOPS OFFERED IN JANUARY BY GOSNOLD

ON CAPE COD

The Guiding Good Choices curriculum consists of four interactive workshops designed to teach participants how to establish clear family guidelines, give children the tools and opportunities they need to make good decisions, improve children's involvement in the family, and enhance overall family connectedness.   Workshops are offered from 6-8:00 PM every Wednesday for four weeks, 1/13, 1/20, 1/27 & 2/3 in two locations: Mattacheese Middle School in West Yarmouth (contact Nancy Ames at 508/540-6550 ext 6003) and Lawrence School in Falmouth (contact Mary Fisher at 508/540-6550 ext 5244.
FORUM FOR CAREGIVERS OF YOUNG CHILDREN
The Bessie Tartt Wilson Initiative for Children and Cape Cod Child Development are hosting a FREE community forum for family, friends and neighbor caregivers of young children on Saturday, January 23, 2016 from 9 AM - 12 PM at Barnstable High School.  The forum will include workshops on encouraging literacy, managing challenging behavior, and local resources.  View flyer for more information.  Register at: www.btwic.org/capeforum or call 508/775-6240 ext 101. 
2016 PATHWAY PRESENTATION SERIES

January will begin Kennedy Donovan's Annual 2016 Pathway Presentation Series.  The first in the series will be Dealing with a Diagnosis: The Early Stages.  This workshop will be held on Tuesday, January 26, 5-7:00 PM at the West Barnstable Community Building, 2377 Meetinghouse Way, Rte 149, West Barnstable and is geared towards parents and professionals of children with developmental concerns, delays, disabilities.  Please view flyer for more details.

HUMAN TRAFFICKING EVENT

Cape Cod PATH (People Against Trafficking in Humans) would like to extend an invitation to join them on Sunday, January 24 at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod, 307 Old Main St., South Yarmouth at 3:00 PM for a compelling documentary "Not My Life".  This film examines and profiles the faces and voices of human trafficking, both internationally and in the U.S. and will be followed by a panel discussion with key figures in the local and national effort to combat its escalating presence in our communities and beyond.

CITIZENSHIP PREPARATION CLASSES

CAPE & ISLANDS MENTAL HEALTH SYMPOSIUM

The Cape and Islands Veterans Outreach Center is holding a Mental Health Symposium for Civilian Behavioral Health Providers on Cape Cod.  The goal of this symposium is to broaden the behavioral health resources available to veterans on the Cape by expanding awareness among civilian providers of the unique nature of the military experience and its impact on the behavioral health of veterans.

B STREET GARDEN SPEAKER SERIES PROVINCETOWN

The B-Street Garden in Provincetown, in coordination with AmeriCorps Cape Cod Member, Emily Fink, is please to announce its 2016 Winter Speaker Series.  Lectures will be held at the Provincetown Library at 6:00 PM on February 2, 9, 23 and March 15View flyer for more information.

 

The B-Street Garden and Conservation Park opened on May 1, 2010 with the assistance of AmeriCorps Cape Cod.  The community garden is part of a 2.29 acre parcel of land, home to Shank Painter Pond, extensive wetlands and rare wildlife.  It is a great placer to relax, meet people, and grow your own food.

HOPEHEALTH OFFERS NEW SUPPORT GROUPS TO ANYONE EXPERIENCING GRIEF OR LOSS
Hope Community Care, part of the HopeHealth family of services announced new community bereavement support groups to be held in Brockton, Falmouth and Hyannis beginning in January.

All support groups provide a safe, confidential and supportive setting for anyone experiencing loss or grief.  Programs are led by licensed professionals from Hope Community Care.  The new support groups are General Grief Support, Spousal Loss and Adult Parental Loss.  These groups are designed for people experiencing the loss of a loved one in the past year.  Read more for registration, schedule and locations.

ON THE STATUS OF WOMEN

Applications are now being accepted to fill vacancies on the Berkshire, Bristol, Cape Cod & Islands and Essex Counties Commissions on the Status of Women.

The Chatham Fund Seeks Grant Proposals

 

The Chatham Fund of the Cape Cod Foundation announced it will distribute grants totaling $4,000 in early 2016.  Recognizing that needs are great over the winter months, priority is given to proposals addressing one or more of the following: hunger, children's needs, the environment, and other social needs including but not limited to: housing, healthy aging, transportation and economic security.

 

The Chatham Fund supports organizations that have current status as 501(c)(3) public charities.  Organizations can be located outside the Town of Chatham but projects and programs must specifically support Chatham residents.

FUNDING OPPORTUNITY

Employers Take Note!  Massachusetts Working on Wellness (WoW) Funding Opportunity

 

Massachusetts Working on Wellness (WoW) supports employers in implementing comprehensive evidence-based worksite health initiatives.  The program provides employers with expert training, technical assistance, an on-line learning community, and seed funding to help offset the cost of starting a wellness program.  This is an excellent opportunity for employers to invest in the health of their employees and community.

 

Keep in mind, "employer" in this context is not limited to a for-profit business; non-profits and government entities are eligible to participate too.

RADON TESTING BY SENIOR ENVIRONMENT CORPS VOLUNTEERS
Senior Environment Corps of Elder Services of CC&I is providing home Radon testing by trained volunteers to any homeowner on Cape Cod.  Radon is a naturally occurring odorless radioactive gas.  It can seep into homes from the surrounding soil.  It is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S.  The Environmental Protection Agency and the Surgeon General have strongly recommended that residences be tested for radon.

The Radon test, including confidential lab report is $30.  Testing must be done while homes are relatively closed up for the winter and is usually conducted in the basement.  Testing is currently underway and will end on March 30, 2016.  If you would like your home tested please call Elder Services at 508/394-4630 ext. 524 or 1-888/394-4630, ext 524 and leave your contact information.

2016 GERONTOLOGY INTENSIVE

WORKSHOP SERIES

If you are a professional currently working with older adults or exploring gerontology as a career choice, this certificate series is for you.  Attached is a listing of workshops in the 2016 Gerontology Intensive Workshop Series which will start in March.  In addition to the 10 Workshop Certificate Series, there are two new workshops this year in June: Seniors, Alcohol and Prescription Drug Addiction and Emotional Distress in Later Life.  The Barnstable County Department of Human Services is a 2016 sponsor of the Gerontology Intensive Workshop Series.

 

The certificate series will run from March 23 - May 25, 2016 from 5-7 PM at the Cape Cod Community College Hyannis Center, 540 Main Street.  CEUs will be offered, 2.5 per workshop or 25 CEUs if all 10 workshops are attended.  Read more.....

MASSACHUSETTS TOBACCO CESSATION & PREVENTION PROGRAM SEEKS YOUTH FOR TOBACCO COMPLIANCE CHECKS
The Massachusetts Department of Public Health FDA Tobacco Compliance Enforcement Program seeks to hire youth ages 16 & 17 as Youth Inspectors to conduct "tobacco compliance checks" to make sure tobacco retailers are following the law and not selling tobacco to minors.  Youth Inspectors will be supervised by an adult Compliance Officer during the process.

Youth will be paid $10.10/hour to conduct the tobacco compliance checks after school, on weekends and during holidays.  After completing the mandatory online training and submitting required paperwork, an adult Compliance Officer will contact individuals.  Compliance Officers will pick up youth and drive them to where the checks will occur.  Youth will not conduct checks in their same town or neighborhood in order to remain anonymous.   Read more.........

Community Access to Child Health (CATCH)3 funding opportunities: 

ROUND UP WITH RITE AID TO BENEFIT CHILDREN'S COVE
Children's Cove strengthens partnership with Rite Aid by allowing consumers to Round Up for Charity.  Children's Cove is now an official KidCents charity, a program created by the Rite Aid Foundation.  Children's Cove will receive a $20,000 grant if 300 new participants sign up to round up on Cape Cod.  Read more.....  Sign up today!
ESPRIT PARTNERSHIP FOR INDEPENDENCE

Esprit Partnership for Independence is a non-profit organization serving adults with learning and related disorders.  This organization provides support services to help adults with milder disabilities live independently with individualized assistance in their choice of community residence.  Esprit also offers a social program, Club Esprit, for opportunities for adults to make friends and engage in a wide variety of local activities and events.  For those interested in the performing arts, the Esprit Players program encourages those who wish to sing, dance or play an instrument to join the troupe that performs musical variety shows at local venues upon request.

MAKE SMOKING HISTORY

Want to quit smoking?  Here are some great tips!

  • Set a quite date and the night before that date make sure to get rid of all your cigarettes, tobacco, ashtrays and matches.  Does this symbolizes your determination to quit. 
  • Write down the three strongest reasons you have for quitting smoking.  Circle the one that is most important to you.  Post it in a place you would normally smoke to help you get through a craving.

          CAPE COD HOARDING TASK FORCE   

Meetings of the Cape Cod Hoarding Task Force are held the third Thursday of every other month.  2016 meeting dates are: 2/18, 4/21, 6/16, 8/18, 10/20 and 12/15 at the Dennis Police Department, 90 Bob Crowell Rd., South Dennis.  These meetings are geared towards professionals who work with individuals with hoarding disorder in any capacity.  For more information about meetings or for assistance and resources email ino@hoardingcapecod.org or visit the Cape Cod Hoarding Task Force website.

SAMARITAN SURVIVOR SUPPORT GROUPS

Over 800,000 people worldwide end their lives annually leaving family and close friends who deeply feel the devastation of each loss.  Samaritans on Cape Cod & the Islands has survivor support groups in Falmouth and Hyannis to provide unconditional emotional support, help survivors gain courage and comfort from one another, and deal with a unique grief that is often not understood by others.  For more information contact the Samaritans office at Tel: 508/548-7999

VETERANS CRISIS HOTLINE

The Veterans Crisis Line (1-800-273-8255, Press 1) is available 24/7/365 to provide confidential counseling and referrals for Veterans and their families.  This is an integrated national outreach effort to increase awareness and use of the Veterans Crisis Line, support and promote broader VA suicide prevention efforts, and promote help-seeking behaviors among Veterans at risk of suicide and other mental health problems.

The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) has designated Mass 2-1-1 as the official point of contact for receiving information during a time of crisis or weather emergency.
