Cape & Islands 2015 Continuum of Care Application
has been Submitted to the
Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)
This year's application totaling $1,727,976 includes 13 renewal projects supporting a total of 145 beds plus the CoC's Homeless Management Information System (HMIS) and three new projects, a Permanent Supportive Housing (SHP) project to add 10 beds, a Coordinated Entry application, and a Planning Grant.
There are two parts to the application which are available on the Department of Human Services website.

NOTICE OF FUNDING AVAILABILITY
WINTER 2016 - AFFORDABLE HOUSING COMPETITION FOR RENTAL PROJECTS

The Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) is pleased to announce the start of the winter 2016 affordable housing competition for rental projects. The deadline for submitting applications to the winter 2016 competition will be Friday, March 11, 2016.
On or before that date, DHCD will accept applications from sponsors whose projects were approved through the Department's pre-application process, with a pre-application submission deadline of December 17, 2015. Only projects with approved pre-applications will be considered during the winter 2016 competition.
All applications must be submitted on-line using the Department's Mass OneStop+ web-based application. View complete details of the Notice of Funding Availability (NOFA)

RADON: THE SILENT BUT DEADLY KILLER | | Radon is a naturally occurring odorless gas that seeps into homes. It is the second leading cause of lung cancer. A radon information session will be sponsored by the Senior Environment Corps Volunteer Program of Elder Services of Cape Cod and the Islands on Monday, November 23, 2015 at 1:00 PM at the Harwich Community Center's Activity Room, 100 Oak St., Harwich. Donate a Turkey Near You: This Thanksgiving fill your heart with joy & give thanks by providing another local family with a warm meal to share together. Turkey collections being held at:
Get involved by contribution to some of the other Holiday Drives. This holiday season get in the spirit by distributing toys for Christmas to approximately 300 children in the town of Bourne. This opportunity for teens and families is provided by the Friends of Bourne Food Pantry.

The Barnstable Senior Center will be closed on
Thursday, November 26th and Friday, November 27th.
Annual Breakfast, December 1st, 9-10 AM. Event is free but RSVP required to 508/862-4750. The Friends of the Barnstable Council on Aging (FBCOA) would like to welcome new, present and potential members to meet the Board members. Would you like to adopt a Homeless Prevention Council child o family for the holidays? This program continues to be a warm and wonderful success thanks to all the community support. GIVE THE GIFT OF WARMTH | |
The Cape Cod Family Resource Center, in collaboration with Cape Abilities, invite you to join this holiday season by giving the Gift of Warmth. Families will be provided warm hats, gloves, mittens, an socks during the winter season. Items can be dropped off at two locations: The Cape Cod Family Resource Center, 29 Bassett Lane, Hyannis or Cape Abilities, 895 Mary Dunn Road, Hyannis.

LETTERS AND CARE PACKAGES FOR THE TROOPS | |
Beyond Beauty is teaming up with Cape Cod Cares for the Troops to support deployed soldiers. Letters and care package items will be collected in the salon in return for a complimentary haircut in both the Hyannis and Mashpee locations during the month of November.
Beyond Beauty is inviting all children to write a letter to a soldier: handwritten with pictures, typed or printed. When your letter is complete, call and make an appointment with Kelley, Leah or Hilary for the "Support the Deployed Soldiers Cut" and bring your letter and a care package item for donation to your appointment. LIVING WITH LOSS AT THE HOLIDAYS GROUP | |
Beacon Hospice is offering a new grief and educational series "Living with Loss at the Holidays: What am I needing?" at the Federated Church of Hyannis, 320 Main St., Hyannis. This group will meet on Monday afternoons from 1-2:30 PM beginning November 16, 2015 through January 11, 2016 (no sessions on 12/21 or 12/28).
The group is free of charge and open to anyone in the community who is currently experiencing grief and has lost a loved one to death in the last 2 years. Pre-registration is requested by calling Bereavement Coordinator, Brooks Reinhold at Beacon Hospice, 508/778-1622 x 115 or by email at brooks.reinhold@amedisys.com.

NEWS FROM THE CAPE COD COUNCIL OF CHURCHES | |
The Cape Cod Council of Churches will be busy in the weeks ahead assisting those in need for whom the holidays can be a particularly difficult times.
11/21, 7:00 AM: Youth StreetReach at the Federated Church, 320 Main St., Hyannis will be holding a breakfast for homeless individuals
12/9: Bridge to Hope Annual Christmas Tea for all volunteer mentors, clients and friends.
12/14, 4-6 PM: Hands of Hope Outreach Center and Food Pantry will distribute Christmas meal makings for an anticipated 150 families. Frozen turkeys or grocery gift cards are needed.
12/15 & 16: the Hands of Hope Center will set up a Toy and Book Boutique at Our Lady of the Annunciation Chapel where eligible families may select gifts for their children ages 18 and under. Contributions are welcome and much appreciated.
12/17: A Baby Center Annual Christmas Party for the Center's families who are in need.
During December, the Council of Churches Homeless Ministries Program provides Christmas gifts to formerly homeless residents now living in transitional housing. Donations of gift cards are welcome.
Covenant to Care for Foster Families distributes over $1,200 in Holiday gift cards to Cape teens living in Foster Care. Donations are appreciated.

COMMUNITY FORUMS

Cape Cod Hospital and Falmouth Hospital will hold three forums in early December for community members to provide input and feedback on the health needs of Barnstable County residents.
Every three years, the hospitals conduct a community health needs assessment for Barnstable County. The input from residents of Cape Cod is critical to ensure that accurate health needs are identified and prioritized. Please attend one of the following forums, your opinions are vital:
- December 3rd from 6pm - 7:30 pm: Falmouth Public Library, 300 Main Street, Falmouth
- December 4th from 9am - 10:30am: Old Firehouse Gallery/Orleans Community Center, 44 Main Street, Orleans
- December 7th from 6pm - 7:30pm: The Cultural Center of Cape Cod, 307 Old Main Street, South Yarmouth

COMMUNITY IMPACT AGENDA AND RFP

Our Community Impact Agenda outlines four new funding categories: Health, Education, Financial Stability and Housing. Within each category you will find specific goals and focus areas. If you are a nonprofit organization offering programs that advance the community issues we have identified, then we encourage you to apply.
Grants requests should range from $5,000 to $50,000. Organizations may submit a request in up to two of the four categories. Please read the application package carefully. If you have questions or concerns, please contact us at grants@uwcapecod.org.
This RFP represents the beginning of our journey to Community Impact. We appreciate your patience and support as we embark on this path. It's an honor to be able to support the nonprofit organizations who do so much to enhance the lives of our residents!

SUMMER FOOD SERVICE PROGRAM
CAPE-WIDE MEETING

Rachel Garside, Coordinator of the Child Nutrition Outreach Program at Project Bread, is coordinating a Summer Food Service Program meeting Cape-wide. This is a federal nutrition program that provides meals for children when school is not in session over the summer. I would like to have School Nutrition Directors in addition to other community members to attend in order to have a range of stakeholders for next summer's programming. There are already some SFSP sites and sponsors running programs on the Cape, but there has been a need for expansion in terms of areas of eligibility according to the USDA.
Please check out the attachment for all the details of the meeting on December 4th, 10am-12pm, at the Barnstable YMCA, 2245 Iyannough Rd., West Barnstable. Feel free to invite colleagues, teachers or anyone from your organization that may be interested as well. |

NAMI CC&I is sponsoring a free all day training led by Dr. Stuart Ablon of Mass General Hospital entitled Think:Kids Collaborative Problem Solving on Saturday, December 5, 9 AM - 3:30 PM in Hyannis. Three Floors Productions' Halcyone Hurst will be holding an eclectic Concert on Saturday, December 12th at the Atlantic House in Provincetown. A portion of ticket sales will be donated to NAMI CCI.

STATUS OF GRANDPARENTS RAISING GRANDCHILDREN OF MASSACHUSETTS | | The Massachusetts Commission on the Status of Grandparents Raising Grandchildren of Massachusetts has been working on a new and improved website that should be easier to navigate and find information. The November newsletter is attached and includes real stories from real "Grandfamilies", information on legal resources available to grandparents, information on supporting school-aged kids and much more. With funds from the Eastham Affordable Housing Trust, the Harwich Ecumenical Council for Housing (HECH) is accepting applications for rental assistance to income qualifying households who live, work or have a child attending school in Eastham. CAPE COD HOARDING TASK FORCE | |
Meetings of the Cape Cod Hoarding Task Force are held the second Thursday of every other month. Upcoming dates are: October 8 & December 10 at the Dennis Police Department, 90 Bob Crowell Rd., South Dennis. These meetings are geared towards professionals who work with individuals with hoarding disorder in any capacity. The Veterans Crisis Line (1-800-273-8255, Press 1) is available 24/7/365 to provide confidential counseling and referrals for Veterans and their families. This is an integrated national outreach effort to increase awareness and use of the Veterans Crisis Line, support and promote broader VA suicide prevention efforts, and promote help-seeking behaviors among Veterans at risk of suicide and other mental health problems. |

The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) has designated Mass 2-1-1 as the official point of contact for receiving information during a time of crisis or weather emergency.
