MEDICARE OPEN ENROLLMENT

Don't wait until it's too late!  Medicare's Open Enrollment Period is October 15 - December 7, 2015. Medicare Advantage (Part C) and Medicare Prescription (Part D) plans change every year.  This is the time to review your options for 2016.
SHINE Can Help!  SHINE Counselors provide free Medicare counseling.  Call your Senior Center or the Cape & Islands Regional SHINE office at 508/375-6762 for an appointment now.  View, post & share flyer.
SHINE is offering community presentations to explain Medicare coverage options, plus plan costs and changes for 2016.  Presentations will run approximately 1.5 hours including time for Q&A.  Pre-registration is required.  View dates, times, locations and pre-registration telephone #'s.
PEDALING FOR PARKINSON'S   

This 8-week session meets 3 times a week, Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 10:30 - 11:30 AM at the YMCA Cape Cod.

 

This cycling program is for people with Parkinson's Disease who are looking to improve gait, balance, speech, handwriting and overall endurance.  A study conducted by The Cleveland Clinic showed a 35% reduction in Parkinson's symptoms by simply pedaling.  Non-member fee is $100. View flyer.

NEW PROGRAMS ~ GOSNOLD ON CAPE COD
Guiding Good Choices:  Gosnold has recently trained staff members in Guiding Good Choices, an evidence-based parenting education for parents of middle-school-aged children with an emphasis on drug education and prevention and how parents can best guide their young ones toward healthy decision-making. The program will be offered on Tuesdays - 10/20, 10/27, 11/3 & 11/10 from 6:30 - 8:30 PM at the Nauset Middle School in Orleans.  View flyer for more information.

Monomoy High School CounselorBeginning the week of October 19th, a Gosnold counselor will be accepting referrals from Monomoy High School for mental health and substance abuse counseling.  The counselor is located off the school grounds (as agreed by the school) at the Albro House on Main Street in Harwich.  She is able to see students from all towns as it is a regional school district.  The office is for after school and evening appointments for students who are referred by the school.

NONPROFIT SURVEY   

Help Shape the Future of Nonprofit Professional Development on Cape Cod & the Islands.
 
The Cape & Islands Partnership for Nonprofit Advancement has created a survey to gather data to help ensure that our region has local, robust training and professional development opportunities for our region's nonprofit organizations.  Your responses will have a direct impact on shaping current and future professional development needs of nonprofit organizations on Cape Cod and the Islands. 
 

Whether you are staff, a volunteer, or a board member of a nonprofit organization, the Cape Cod Foundation asks that you please take 10 minutes to take the survey.


 

The Cape & Islands Partnership for Nonprofit Advancement is a regional collaborative whose mission is to leverage resources to effectively coordinate and expand training and education opportunities for nonprofits on Cape Cod and the Islands.

 

THE FALMOUTH FUND SEEKS GRANT PROPOSALS   

The Falmouth Fund of the Cape Cod Foundation, which serves general needs in the town of Falmouth, has set a December 15 deadline for grant applications.

 

A grant writing workshop, hosted by the Foundation and The Falmouth Fund will explain more about the application process.  The workshop will be held on Tuesday, November 3rd, 10-11:30 AM at the Education Center at the Falmouth Historical Society.  Attendance at the workshop, which will cover information about the process and tips for a successful application, is encouraged.

 

RSVP to Maura by November 2nd.  Please include your name and organization with subject line Falmouth Fund.

 

Recipients of the grants must be 501 (c)(3) organizations and serve the residents of Falmouth.  Visit the Cape Cod Foundation website for grant guidelines and access to the online applications.  Grant recipients will be notified within three months of the December 15 deadline.

Stop the 22: Veteran Suicide Awareness Hike: November 7, 9:00 AM.  22 mile hike to raise awareness about the suicide rate among our Nation's veterans - 22 Vets per day die by suicide.  The hike begins at Cape Cod Community College.  View flyer for more information.

 

Unfinished Conversation: Healing from Traumatic Loss: November 15-18 at the Kripalu Center, Stockbridge, MA.    Based on the book Unfinished Conversation: Healing from Suicide and Loss - A Guided Journey, this retreat draws on many portals of transformation, including directed mindfulness, self-inquiry, reflective journaling, compassionate connection, somatic awareness, music, poetry, movement and silence to help you move from suffering toward resolution and greater freedom.  CEU's available. 18TH ANNUAL DEMENTIA & ALZHEIMER'S AWARENESS CONFERENCE   
Register now for Hope Dementia's Annual Fall Conference "Adapting & Planning for Disease Progression" and hear Lisa Krinsky from the LGBT Aging Project discuss what you need to know about dementia care for the LGBT community.  Other topics include From Early stage to Late stage; Setting Realistic Expectations, LGBT Community and Alzheimer's Disease; What You Need to Know; and Love is Listening.

CAPE & ISLANDS REGIONAL DOMESTIC VIOLENCE COUNCIL QUARTERLY MEETING

Meet and Greet the Police and Sheriff Department's Civilian DV Advocates and Designated DV Officers on Monday, November 16, 2015, 1:30 - 3:30 PM at the Harbor View Conference Room in the Barnstable County Complex, 3195 Main Street, Barnstable Village at the C&I Regional Domestic Violence Council (CIRDVC) quarterly meeting.

 

All are welcome.  RSVP is appreciated but not required.  RSVP to [email protected].  The CIRDVC is comprised of human service and social justice organizations, law enforcement agencies, attorneys and concerned individuals that meet quarterly for the purposes of networking and professional development regarding the issues that surround domestic violence.

Dance in the Rain Underground Asylum Coffee House Event: NAMI CC&I is sponsoring this free event on November 19, 5:30 - 9:30 PM at the Double Tree Inn in Hyannis.  Meet with State Representative Tim Whelan and Dr. Jeffery Rediger of McLean Hospital/Harvard/Oprah Winfrey show. Think Differently: A New Approach for parenting, teaching and treating children with behavioral issues.  NAMI CC&I is sponsoring a free all day training let by Dr. Stuart Ablon of MASS General Hospital:  Think: Kids Collaborative Problem Solving (CPS) on Saturday, December 5, 9:00 AM - 3:30 PM in Hyannis.  This is a revolutionary evidence-based approach for helping children with behavioral issues.  The program is free but registration is required.  Lunch included.  Call 508/778-4277 or email [email protected] or more information or to register.

Veteran Outreach and Collaboration: Working in collaboration with the Cape and Islands Veterans Outreach Center, the Grace Program and the Cape Cod Military, Veteran and Family Collaborative, NAMI CC&I will be offering direct programming and services to the nearly 30,000 active and retired military across the Cape and Islands.  In addition to other initiatives, two veterans will be trained to lead Family to Family and support groups.
GOVERNOR BAKER APPOINTS LINN TORTO TO SPEARHEAD HOMELESSNESS EFFORTS

Governor Charlie Baker announced the appointment of Linn Torto as the Executive Director of the Interagency Council on Housing and Homelessness (ICHH), spearheading the administration's efforts to end homelessness through the Executive Office of Health and Human Services (EOHHS), Executive Office of Housing and Economic Development (EOHED) and respective agencies.  A veteran of state government, Torto brings extensive public and private sector experience in housing and policy development.

 

The Baker-Polito administration has made ending family homelessness a priority as it moves forward with reforms to reach families before they need to enter the emergency shelter system and reduce the number of homeless families living in hotels and motels.  Read more.....

HOME CARE & HOSPICE OF NEW ENGLAND AND HOPEHEALTH ANNOUNCE AFFILIATION THAT WILL SERVE EASTERN MASS AND

RHODE ISLAND

Home Care & Hospice of New England and HopeHealth have announced that they will form an affiliation that will serve Rhode Island and eastern Massachusetts, becoming the largest not-for-profit hospice and palliative care provider in New England.  The move will allow the organizations to advance their shared mission of enhancing the quality of life for people experiencing serious illness and their families.  The parent, not-for-profit organization will assume the HopeHealth brand and will have three non-profit subsidiaries.  Read more....

          CAPE COD HOARDING TASK FORCE   

Meetings of the Cape Cod Hoarding Task Force are held the second Thursday of every other month.  Upcoming dates are: October 8 & December 10 at the Dennis Police Department, 90 Bob Crowell Rd., South Dennis.  These meetings are geared towards professionals who work with individuals with hoarding disorder in any capacity.  For more information email [email protected] or visit the Cape Cod Hoarding Task Force website.

SAMARITAN SURVIVOR SUPPORT GROUPS

Over 800,000 people worldwide end their lives annually leaving family and close friends who deeply feel the devastation of each loss.  Samaritans on Cape Cod & the Islands has survivor support groups in Falmouth and Hyannis to provide unconditional emotional support, help survivors gain courage and comfort from one another, and deal with a unique grief that is often not understood by others.  For more information contact the Samaritans office at Tel: 508/548-7999

VETERANS CRISIS HOTLINE

The Veterans Crisis Line (1-800-273-8255, Press 1) is available 24/7/365 to provide confidential counseling and referrals for Veterans and their families.  This is an integrated national outreach effort to increase awareness and use of the Veterans Crisis Line, support and promote broader VA suicide prevention efforts, and promote help-seeking behaviors among Veterans at risk of suicide and other mental health problems. 

MASS 2-1-1 RESOURCE LOCATOR
MASS 2-1-1 is a free, confidential, 24/7 information and referral database and hotline for access to health and human services for consumers and providers.  Multi-lingual translations are also available.  To locate services dial 211 or 1-877-211-MASS on your telephone or go to www.mass211help.org
  
The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) has designated Mass 2-1-1 as the official point of contact for receiving information during a time of crisis or weather emergency.
