AMERICORPS VISTA FUNDING OPPORTUNITY
The Barnstable County Resource Development and Human Services Departments are exploring the opportunity to submit a concept paper requesting 1-2 VISTA volunteers for 2016-17. We are seeking project ideas from potential site sponsors. Projects may be extended for 3-5 years depending on available funding and need. AmeriCorps VISTAs serve as full-time volunteers with organizations across the country to fight poverty and can help your organization by working on a project that helps you address a critical community need.

HUD CONTINUUM OF CARE FUNDING AVAILABLE | |
The Cape & Islands Continuum of Care has released a Request for Proposals (RFP) seeking renewal and new projects to include in its FY2015 CoC Program application to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
The RFP seeks renewal appplications for existing projects and applications for the following types of new projects:
- Permanent Supportive Housing for chronically homeless individuals or families
- Rapid Rehousing programs for homeless families, homeless individuals, homeless youth, or persons fleeing or seeking to flee domestic violence
- Centralized or Coordinated Assessment
A Bidders Conference for all interested in applying for funding will be held on Friday, October 9 at 2 p.m. in the Innovation Room at the Barnstable County Complex. |

Harvest to Feed the Hidden Hungry. Volunteers needed October 10, 11 & 12. Join the Cape Cod 5 Foundation as they harvest over 2+ tons of sweet potatoes donated by Cape Cod Organic Farms and distributed by the Hunger Network to food pantries across Cape Cod.
Volunteer harvesters are needed at Cape Cod Organic Farms, 3675 Rt. 6A in Barnstable:
- Saturday, October 10th, 1-4 PM
- Sunday, October 11th, 10 AM - 4 PM
- Monday, October 12th, 10 AM - 2 PM

SUBSTANCE ABUSE PREVENTION COLLABORATIVE - PROGRAM SPECIALIST | |
The Program Specialist will assist the Barnstable County Department of Human Services in coordinating regional prevention strategies; coordinating efforts among Substance Abuse Prevention Collaborative (SAPC) members and providing support to regional sponsored activities.
Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in public health, social work, human services, behavioral health, or related field, minimum of three years' experience working on regional initiatives and/or prevention programs. Knowledge of behavioral health and substance use systems and resources in region. Must possess, or be willing to obtain, certification as a prevention specialist within two years of hire. BARNSTABLE COUNTY HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION SEEKS NEW COMMISSIONERS | |
The Barnstable County Human Rights Commission is seeking candidates to fill three vacancies on the Commission for three-year terms and one vacancy to complete a partial term of one year, beginning January 2016. The nine member volunteer Human Rights Commission was created in 2005 by the County's Assembly of Delegates to promote equal opportunity, prevent discrimination, investigate and mediate complaints and provide human rights information. Through a competitive process, Independence House has been invited by the Allstate Foundation to participate in the 2015 Purple Purse Challenge. The challenge runs from October 1 - 27, 2015 and is an ONLINE ONLY campaign with numerous opportunities for donors to help increase their donations with challenges and contests and an overall chance of Independence House winning up to $100,000 by the end of the 27 days.
The is to raise funds for the Independence House Economic Empowerment Program. This program will help domestic violence survivors fight poverty and take control of their financial lives through individualized financial plans, education and support.

Independence House has been awarded a $100,000 grant by Robert Kraft and the New England Patriots Charitable Foundation. This award will increase the services of the Independence House Housing Stabilization Program, providing more transitional housing assistance to survivors of domestic violence and their children. OCTOBER IS NATIONAL DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH | |
Domestic Violence Awareness Month evolved from the "Day of Unity" held in October 1981 and was conceived by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. The intent was to connect advocates across the nation who were working to end violence against women and children.
The Cape Cod Center for Women will hold a Candlelight Vigil Remembering Victims of Domestic Violence on Friday, October 16, 2015 (Rain Date - October 23rd), from 7-8:30 PM at Peg Noonan Park, Falmouth.
The Cape Cod Center for Women is the only 24-hour confidential emergency domestic violence shelter on Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket.

The Lights on Afterschool Child & Family Fair will be held on Thursday, October 22nd from 4:30 - 6:00 PM at the Boys & Girls Club of Cape Cod, 31 Frank E. Hicks Drive, Mashpee. This event is Free and open to the public. See invite.

HopeHealth, a nonprofit healthcare organization, announced the launch of Hope Academy, its newly branded professional and community education and training offering. The program is designed expressly to enhance understanding, knowledge and skills pertinent to the care of people with serious illness and includes a rich continuing education curriculum for healthcare professionals.
Hope Academy's professional educators offer more than 20 accredited courses spanning in-service training, CE and CME programs. The curriculum covers a myriad of subjects pertaining to the needs of people facing serious illness, end-of-life care, grief or loss - and to their caregivers. The curriculum also includes a Speaker's Bureau, along with presentations and education designed for the lay community, offered free of charge throughout eastern Massachusetts. Read more....

REPORT ON THE SUMMIT ON OLDER ADULTS | |
On October 30, 2014, the Massachusetts Executive Office of Elder Affairs (EOEA), the Massachusetts Departments of Mental Health (DMH) and Public Health (DPH) and the Massachusetts Association of Older Americans (MAOA) organized and sponsored a "by invitation only" summit on the Boston University Campus. Over 100 Massachusetts state agency heads, policy makers, health and home care professionals, medical directors, health economists, providers, advocates and other leaders engaged in a day-long conversation on the challenges presented by the coming wave of older citizens with behavioral health needs. Baby Boomers are aging and here in the Commonwealth, most of the population growth during the next 15 years will be among those 60 and older.
The attached report of the Summit on Older Adults: Behavioral Health Issues and the Coming Wave, is a brief synopsis of the day's outstanding presentations as well as a digest of the comments from audience members and is not intended to provide a detailed overview.

If you are newly eligible for ConnectorCare Plans (subsidized public health insurance*), you can apply and enroll at any time during the year. You may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period if you have Qualifying Life Events, such as a marriage, having a baby, losing a job, new Massachusetts resident, etc.

Telephone Reassurance Program: Every weekday morning Center volunteers call seniors to check in with them. If the volunteer does not get in touch with the senior after a few repeat calls they notify the Outreach Department who follows up with a home visit-safety check. If you live alone or know a senior who does contact the Support Services department to get enrolled: Claudia @ 508/862-4754 or Judy @ 508/862-4752.
Ask the Nurse Wednesdays: 9:30-11:00 AM: Town of Barnstable Nurse, Peg Stanton, will be available in he Health Room at the Center to answer your health questions and concerns and provide information and resources.
Blood Pressure Screening Tuesdays: 9 AM - Noon: Drop by and sign in for a free blood pressure check with volunteer nurses.
Need Transportation?: The Silver Express transportation program offers dependable service, courteous drivers and short wait times providing transportation to appointments, errands, and even a ride to the Barnstable Senior Center to attend activities. All vans are handicap accessible and operate Monday - Friday on a first come/first serve basis. Suggested voluntary contribution of $5 round trip. Call 508/862-4752 for information.
Adult Supportive Day Program: Designed to provide a comfortable atmosphere for elders to maintain independence, build new friendships and remain active while aging-in-place in the community. Fees are income-based and transportation may be available. Program hours: Monday-Friday, 9 AM - 3 PM. Call 508/862-4765 for more information.
Brown Bag for Seniors Program: If you get or will be getting fuel assistance or live in subsidized housing, or receive food stamps you will be eligible for this Program to receive a free bag of groceries once a month! CAPE COD HOARDING TASK FORCE | |
Meetings of the Cape Cod Hoarding Task Force are held the second Thursday of every other month. Upcoming dates are: October 8 & December 10 at the Dennis Police Department, 90 Bob Crowell Rd., South Dennis. These meetings are geared towards professionals who work with individuals with hoarding disorder in any capacity.
