Welcome to the information E-Newsletter from the Barnstable County Department of Human Services.  This newsletter is designed to provide timely information on health and human service topics of interest for people living and working in Barnstable County.  For additional information visit the Department website at bchumanservices.net
DEPARTMENT CORNER 
Please join us in welcoming Patty Watson to the Department of Human Services.  Patty joined the Department this month as a Project Specialist, filling the vacancy left by Jessica McHugh.  Some of you may know Patty from her time as the Assistant Director at the Family Pantry of Cape Cod in Harwich. 
 
As the Project Specialist, Patty is responsible for the Department's array of on-line information tools and websites.  She will also represent the Department on various health and human service related committees and groups to ensure the Department is connected to and supporting regional efforts to create a healthy, connected Cape Cod.   We are very glad to have Patty on board!

NEWS FROM THE BOYS & GIRLS CLUB

OF CAPE COD   

Back to School Time & the Welcome Mat is out at the Boys & Girls Club of Cape Cod!

 

The Club will be holding a Parent's Open House on Friday, September 11th from 5-7 PMALL Club memberships need to be renewed for the new school year and forms and online payment are available on the Club's website.  The Club will reopen the Afterschool Program on Monday, September 14th.  The Club will be open from 2-6 PM for children in grades 1-6.  The Teen Program for grades 9-12 in the room off the cafeteria in Mashpee High School and then transitions to the Kraft Family Clubhouse from 6-8 PM on Thursday and until 10 PM on Fridays. The Teen Program kicks off with a teen party and free food on Friday Night, September 18th from 6-10 PM at the Clubhouse with the room at the High School open during the day the following Monday.

ASSISTANCE WITH APPLYING & ENROLLING IN MASS HEALTH CONNECTOR AND MASSHEALTH INSURANCE   
Community Action Committee of Cape Cod & Islands will be at the following events to provide information on applying & enrolling in MA Health Connector and MassHealth insurance.  Certified Navigators will also be providing information on the redetermination & renewal processes, coverage options for college students, and the upcoming Open Enrollment to begin Nov. 1st.  They will be available to make appointments for people needing in-office assistance.  Languages represented: English, Brazilian Portuguese, Spanish.  You can also call to schedule an in-office appointment or for more information @ 508-771-1727 or walk-in at 372 North St., Hyannis, MA. BARNSTABLE COUNTY HOME CONSORTIUM NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING & PUBLIC COMMENT PERIOD   

The Barnstable County HOME Consortium has completed its 2015 Fiscal Year (July 1, 2014- June 30, 2015) utilizing U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's (HUD) Federal Fiscal Year 2014 HOME Program funds. The HOME Program was awarded $404,552 to carry out the goals and objectives set forth in the 2010- 2014 Consolidated Plan and Annual Action Plan for this period. A draft Consolidated Annual Performance Evaluation Report (CAPER), outlining the year's accomplishments and challenges is available for public comment.

 

The Consortium will conduct a public hearing on: Thursday, September 17, 2015 - 8:30 AM in the Innovation Room in the Open Cape Building in the Barnstable County Complex, 3195 Main Street, Barnstable, MA 02630.  Read more in English, Spanish or Portuguese.

 

WORKFORCE EDUCATION RESOURCE CENTER AT CAPE COD COMMUNITIY COLLEGE   

The Workforce Education Resource Center (WERC) at Cape Cod Community College is your source for accessible, affordable Health Care Training Programs on Cape Cod.  WERC is the premier training resource provider for local businesses and organization on Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket, Plymouth and Southeastern Massachusetts.  Offerings include:

 

Home Health Aid Certificate: 9/9-10/28/15

Self-care for Health Care Professionals: 9/9-10/14/15

Reiki 1 for Health Care Practitioners: 11/7/15, 9 AM - 3 PM

THE NATIONAL ALLIANCE OF MENTAL ILLNESS FOR CAPE COD & THE ISLANDS OFFERS FAMILY TO FAMILY CLASSES  

NAMI Cape Cod & t he Islands will offer 12 week Family to Family Education courses for family members, significant others and caregivers of individuals living with mental illness.  The course is designed to help participants understand and support their loved one while maintaining their own well-being.  Topics include up-to-date information on various illnesses, medications and brain biology, empathy and communication skills. 

 

Classes will be held in:

Bourne on Mondays beginning in September from 6-8:30 PM

Barnstable Village, Tuesdays beginning September 9, 6-8:30 PM

BARNSTABLE SENIOR CENTER   

Fall Prevention: September 15, 10-11 AM, Barnstable Senior Center, 825 Falmouth Rd., Hyannis.  Discussion on safety at home and out in public to prevent a fall and ideas and tips to maintain independence.  Free - RSVP to 508/862-4750.

 

Telephone Reassurance Program:  The Senior Center is offering this program, every weekday morning one of the Center volunteers calls seniors that liv e alone to make sure they are up and alright.  For most of these seniors this is the only contact with the outside world that may have that day.  If the volunteer does not get in touch with the senior after a few repeat calls they notify the Outreach Department who follows up with a home visit-safety check.  If you live alone or know a senior who does contact the Support Services department to get enrolled: Claudia @ 508/862-4754 or Judy @ 508/862-4752.

 

Need Transportation?: The Silver Express transportation program offers dependable service, courteous drivers and short wait times providing transportation to appointments, errands, and even a ride to the Barnstable Senior Center to attend activities.  All vans are handicap accessible and operate Monday - Friday on a first come/first serve basis.  Suggested voluntary contribution of $5 round trip.  Call 508/862-4752 for information. 

 

Adult Supportive Day Program: Designed to provide a comfortable atmosphere for elders to maintain independence, build new friendships and remain active while aging-in-place in the community.  Fees are income-based and transportation may be available.  Program hours: Monday-Friday, 9 AM - 3 PM.  Call 508/862-4765 for more information.

 

Brown Bag for Seniors Program:  The Barnstable Senior Center has a program to help with your food budget.  If  you get or will be getting fuel assistance or live in subsidized housing, or receive food stamps you will be eligible for the Brown Bag for Seniors Program.  The program consists of a free bag of groceries once a month consisting of healthy foods ranging from soup to cereal, meat to vegetables and even an occasional treat!  If you have limited mobility some home deliveries may be available.  Complete the Brown Bag application and mail to Outreach Department, Barnstable Senior Center, 825 Falmouth Rd., Hyannis, MA  02601. COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS, INC. HOSTS

CAPE COD'S MOST DELICIOUS FUNDRAISER   

Community Connections presents Cape Cod's most delicious fundraiser at Arnold's Lobster & Clam Bar, Route 6 in Eastham, on Friday, September 18th, 11:30 AM - 8:00 PM.

 

Stop by for a delicious lunch or dinner, play a round of mini-golf or two, and sample some premium ice cream.  A large portion of purchases made during this event will go to Community Connections, supporting those with disabilities and their families on Cape Cod and Southeastern MA.

HEALTHY HARVEST CELEBRATION
HARBOR COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTER HYANNIS   
Harbor Community Health Center-Hyannis welcomes the entire family to its annual Healthy Harvest Celebration at the center's premises at 735 Attucks Lane, Hyannis. The free event will be held on Saturday, September 26, from 12:00-3:00 p.m.
 
In addition to music, refreshments, games and information tables, performances throughout the afternoon will feature an African Drum group, Hip Hop Dance demonstrations, yoga classes and Brazilian Capoeira.  Other activities include a bike safety program, fire department car seat checks, a bounce house, arts and crafts - and lots more free health screening, including a special Healthy Aging Area. CHILD THERAPY FOR DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SURVIVORS   

The Cape Cod Center for Women (CCCW) is the only emergency domestic violence shelter on Cape Cod and the Islands dedicated to serving all individuals and families fleeing domestic violence.

 

CCCW is launching Child Therapy for Domestic Violence Survivors.  This program will provide free and confidential therapy to children who have experienced domestic violence.  In addition, CCCW will offer free and confidential wrap around counseling to safe parents, siblings and family members.  View flyer.  If you know a child in need please call the CCCW hotline at 508/564-7233 (SAFE).  Services are no cost and no insurance necessary.

 

The North Falmouth Congregational Church, 155 Old Main Rd., Falmouth will be hosting a benefit concert to support the new Child Therapy for Domestic Violence Survivors Program on Saturday, September 26th, 7:00 PM.  Tickets for the concert are $15 and you can also join for a $5 soup supper at 5:30 PM.  Call 508/563-2177 for tickets and more information.

FOOD INSECURITY NUTRITION INCENTIVE - HEALTH INCENTIVES PROGRAM (FINI-HIP) STAKEHOLDER & FUNDER MEETINGS   
As many of you know, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Institute for Food and Agriculture (NIFA) awarded the Massachusetts Department of Transitional Assistance (DTA) a $3.4 million grant through the Food Insecurity Nutrition Incentive (FINI) Grant Program. DTA is honored to have received this grant, and is proud of the acknowledgment that Massachusetts is seen as a national leader in the work on healthy incentives and nutritious food choices. 
 
DTA will convene five regional community Stakeholder meetings across the state.  A meeting to discuss the FINI grant and getting more Fresh/Local produce to SNAP clients by removing barriers to access will be held at the Harborview Conference Room in the County Complex, 3195 Main St., Barnstable Village on September 28thRead more.....  RSVP

THIRD ANNUAL BEHAVIORAL HEALTH SUMMIT  - BUILDING BRIDGES TO RECOVERY
Registration is now open for the Third Annual Behavioral Health Summit.  This year's Summit will showcase "Models of Promise" - connecting behavioral and physical health services across a continuum from collaboration to full scale integration of services.  The Summit will be held on Friday, October 2, 2015 from 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM at the Hyannis Resort and Conference Center, 35 Scudder Rd. in Hyannis.  More information......  Register now
POWERFUL TOOLS FOR CAREGIVERS WORKSHOP   
Powerful Tools for Caregivers is an educational program designed to help family caregivers take care of themselves while caring for a relative or a friend. You will benefit from this class whether you are helping a parent, spouse, friend, someone who lives at home, in a nursing home, or across the country.

CAPE COD HOARDING TASK FORCE

TRAINING FOR HOME HEALTH WORKERS   

Jesse Edsell-Vetter, hoarding intervention expert of the Metropolitan Boston Housing Partnership, will join the Cape Cod Hoarding Task Force on October 6, 2015, 9:00 AM - 3:30 PM, Harborview Conference Room, Barnstable County Complex, 3195 Main St. (Rte. 6A) , Barnstable Village to present an advanced hoarding training for home health workers

 

This event will be tailored to professionals who deal directly with individuals in their homes and address most effective ways to support and assist an individual with hoarding disorder.

QUALITY OF LIFE SUMMIT 2015

SCOPE OF PAIN TRAININGS   

 

Cape Cod Healthcare presents: SCOPE of Pain (Safe and Competent Opioid Prescribing Education) trainings on October 21, 2015, 5:30-9:00 PM at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis and October 22, 2015, 5:30-9:00 PM at Falmouth Hospital.  Tuition is free, register now at www.scopeofpain.com.

NEWS FROM INDEPENDENCE HOUSE   

The Davenport Companies presents the 15th Annual Seaside LeMans, The Race for the Cape Cod Community on Saturday, September 12, 2015.  All proceeds of the race will benefit five non-profit agencies including Independence House, Calmer Choice, Cape Cod Healthcare, Cape Cod Maritime Museum and Katelynn's Closet.  Read more.....

 

Independence House was awarded a Violence Prevention Grant from Eastern Bank Charitable Foundation.  On November 5th from 7:30 - 9:30 AM at the Cape Codder Resort, Eastern Bank's Community Advocacy Awards ceremony will honor Lysetta Hurge-Putnam, Executive Director of Independence House for her domestic violence work on behalf of victims in the community and her leadership on domestic violence issues.

 

The Purple Purse Challenge is Coming!  The challenge, which runs from October 1-27, 2015 is an online-only campaign with numerous opportunities for donors to increase their donations with challenges and contests and an overall chance for Independence House to win up to $100,000 by the end of the 27 day challenge.  The goal is to raise funds for the Independence House Economic Empowerment Program which helps domestic violence survivors fight poverty and take control of their financial lives.  Stayed tuned for more information!

ESPRIT-PARTNERSHIP FOR INDEPENDENCE
Esprit is a non-Profit organization serving adults with learning and related disorders.
 
The organization provides support services to help adults with milder disabilities live independently with individualized assistance in their choice of community residence. Esprit also offers a social program, Club Esprit, for opportunities for adults to make friends and engage in a wide variety of local activities and events. For those interested in the performing arts, the Esprit Players program encourages those who wish to sing, dance or play an instrument to join the troupe that performs musical variety shows at local venues upon request.
 
Volunteers are needed to help with driving members to CLUB activities, chaperoning, photography, teaching hobbies, creating sports activities, helping with musical talent, special projects and more. ACCESS TO HEALTH INSURANCE
STILL AVAILABLE

ACCESS TO HEALTH INSURANCE IS STILL AVAILABLE:  You can apply and enroll in MassHealth at any time during the year. If you are newly eligible for ConnectorCare Plans (subsidized public health insurance*), you can apply and enroll at any time during the year.  You may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period if you have Qualifying Life Events, such as a marriage, having a baby, losing a job, new Massachusetts resident, etc.

  

Community Action Committee of Cape Cod & Islands has certified MA Health Connector Navigators trained to help you! SAMARITAN SURVIVOR SUPPORT GROUPS

VETERANS CRISIS HOTLINE

The Veterans Crisis Line (1-800-273-8255, Press 1) is available 24/7/365 to provide confidential counseling and referrals for Veterans and their families.  This is an integrated national outreach effort to increase awareness and use of the Veterans Crisis Line, support and promote broader VA suicide prevention efforts, and promote help-seeking behaviors among Veterans at risk of suicide and other mental health problems.
