MASSACHUSETTS SUBSTANCE ABUSE PREVENTION COLLABORATIVE   

Department of Human Services Seeks Coordinator for Massachusetts Substance Abuse Prevention Collaborative (SAPC) in Barnstable County


 
Barnstable County, through its Chief Procurement Officer and on behalf of the Department of Human Services, seeks a qualified contractor to assist the Department in coordinating the "Massachusetts  Substance Abuse Prevention Collaborative" (SAPC) in Barnstable County.  The Massachusetts Department of Public Health, Bureau of Substance Abuse Services (BSAS) has awarded Barnstable County a one year grant for the period of July 1, 2015 - June 30, 2016 with options to renew through 2022.

 

The purpose of the Massachusetts Substance Abuse Prevention Collaborative (SAPC) Initiative is to implement or amend local policy, practice, systems, and environmental change to prevent underage drinking and other drug use and to increase the number and capacity of municipalities across the Commonwealth addressing these issues.  The SAPC Coordinator is responsible for coordinating all collaborative activities and regional strategies; coordinating all efforts among collaborative members; conducting trainings and presentations; and providing support to regional sponsored activities.

 

Proposals will be received at the Superior Court House, Office of the County Commissioners, Purchasing Department, 3195 Main Street, P.O. Box 427, Barnstable, MA 02630, on or before July 7, 2015 at 10:00AM.   No exceptions will be allowed.

ACCESS TO HEALTH INSURANCE
STILL AVAILABLE

ACCESS TO HEALTH INSURANCE IS STILL AVAILABLE:  You can apply and enroll in MassHealth at any time during the year. If you are newly eligible for ConnectorCare Plans (subsidized public health insurance*), you can apply and enroll at any time during the year.  You may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period if you have Qualifying Life Events, such as a marriage, having a baby, losing a job, new Massachusetts resident, etc.

  

Community Action Committee of Cape Cod & Islands has certified MA Health Connector Navigators trained to help you! To schedule an appointment or for more information: call 508-771-1727 or walk-in at 372 North St., Hyannis, MA. (We offer services in Falmouth and on Nantucket, by appointment only.)

DUFFY HEALTH CENTER ORGANIZES "CHRISTMAS IN JULY"   

Duffy Health Center will be collecting items to help people who are homeless and those at risk of being homeless stay safe in the heat this summer.  Items such as bottled water, new T-shirts, hats, sunscreen, toiletry items, towels and bags or backpacks will be collected June 17 - July 17 at the reception desk in the lobby of Duffy Health Center, 94 Main Street, Hyannis, Monday - Friday, 7:30 AM - 5:00 PM.  Items will be distributed to Duffy clients over the summer.  Read more.....

Last Call for WE CAN's PathMaker Program - Info Session - July 6th.  The PathMaker Program is a 10 month (September - June) women's mentoring program of mutual learning and growth.  To learn more about the program and the application process, attend an Information Session on Monday, July 6, 5:30 - 7:30 PM at the Harwich Community Center, 100 Oak St, Harwich.  Call WE CAN to register at 508/430-8111.

 

Bankruptcy Law or Family Law Legal Consults - FalmouthTuesday, July 21, 10:15 AM - 12:45 PM.  Scheduled 1:1, 30-minute appointments with an attorney for guidance and information.  Available in collaboration with and located at the Falmouth Service Center by appointment only.  Additionally, Saturday Falmouth Family Law appointments may be available at a different location by appointment.  Call WE CAN for details at 508/430-8111.

LOTTERY APPLICATIONS AVAILABLE FOR READY RENTER LIST FOR

YARMOUTH UNITS   

Lottery Applications are now available for the Ready Renter List for Yarmouth affordable rental units. View flyer for more information and application form.

 

Information session will be held on July 9th at 6:00 PM, Room A in the Yarmouth Town Hall, 1146 Route 28, South Yarmouth.

 

All applications must be received by the Plymouth Redevelopment Authority, 11 Lincoln St., Plymouth, MA  02360 NO LATER THAN 4:30 pm ON AUGUST 24, 2015.

6th ANNUAL MEMORIAL MOTORCYCLE RIDE FOR THE FALLEN   

The Annual Memorial Motorcycle Ride in memory of United States Marine Corps Corporal Nicholas G. Xiarhos and in honor of all our fallen heroes with ties to Cape Cod as well as all Veterans past, present, and future who serve our country will be held on Sunday, July 19, 2015.  The ride will begin at the Barnstable County Sheriff's Complex, 6000 Sheriff's Place in Bourne.  Gates open at 8:00 AM with a ceremony at 10:00 AM and kick stands up at 11:00 AM.  The ride will finish at Dennis-Yarmouth High School. 

 

Nick is one of the 13 "Fallen American Warriors" from Cape Cod who made this ultimate sacrifice.  Admission is $20 per person (includes ride, lunch and raffle entry).  Proceeds from this event will benefit the Nicholas G. Xiarhos Memorial Fund and the Massachusetts Iraq and Afghanistan Fallen Heroes Memorial Fund.  View flyer for more information.

New Support Groups for Anyone Experiencing Grief or Loss:  New community bereavement support groups will be offered by HopeHealth in Hyannis at HopeHealth, 765 Attucks Lane, and Sandwich at St. John's Episcopal Church, 159 Main Street beginning in July.  Advanced registration is required: call 508/957-0268 for Hyannis and 508/957-0244 for Sandwich. HEALTHY LIVING CAPE COD PROGRAMS   
The focus of Health Living Cape Cod is improving the well-being of individuals living with chronic health conditions and in particular those living with diabetes, hypertension or who are at risk of falls.

My Life, My Health: This is a chronic disease self-management program that increases the self-efficacy of individuals who complete the program.  This 6 week program meets for 2 1/2 hours each week and is offered at convenient locations throughout Barnstable County.

Matter of Balance: This program is for individuals concerned with falling or who are at risk of falls.  This 8 week program meets for 2 hours each week or can be condensed into 4 weeks meeting 2X per week.

Tai Chi:  This is becoming a very popular program!  Evidence shows that Tai Chi practice effectively decreases falls risk in older adults.  Through exercise, breathing and relaxation participants learn an easy to follow routine they can practice at home.  This program meets 1 or 2 times per week for a total of 24 weeks.

CALLING ALL RUNNERS FOR THE
NEW BALANCE FALMOUTH ROAD RACE
The Cape & Islands Suicide Prevention Coalition will once again be participating in the Falmouth Road Race's Numbers for Nonprofits program. Through this program, we are able to offer 10 New Balance Falmouth Road Race registration numbers to people interested in running the race on August 16th as a fundraiser for the CISPC. It is a great opportunity for non-Falmouth residents to get to run the Race without entering the lottery!

YMCA PROGRAMS   

Diabetes Prevention Program:  Helps adults at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes reduce their risk for developing the disease by taking steps that will improve overall health and well-being.  Research by the National Institute of Health has shown that programs like the YMCA's Diabetes Prevention Program an reduce the number of new cases of type 2 diabetes by 58% and 71% in adults over the age of 60.  Classes are forming now in West Barnstable, Mashpee, Bourne and Falmouth.  Please contact Patience Smith-Cabrera at 508/362-6500 ext. 136. Livestrong at the YMCA Cape Cod:  The mission of this program is to empower adult cancer survivors to improve functional capacity and to increase quality of life through an organized program of fitness and strength.  The YMCA Cape Cod is now forming classes for our session beginning in early September.  This 12 week program is free to cancer survivors and their families.  Contact Patience Smith-Cabrera at 508/362-6500 ext. 136.  View flyer for more information.

VETERANS CRISIS HOTLINE

The Veterans Crisis Line (1-800-273-8255, Press 1) is available 24/7/365 to provide confidential counseling and referrals for Veterans and their families.  This is an integrated national outreach effort to increase awareness and use of the Veterans Crisis Line, support and promote broader VA suicide prevention efforts, and promote help-seeking behaviors among Veterans at risk of suicide and other mental health problems.
