DEPARTMENT CORNER

The Barnstable County Regional Substance Abuse Council has completed an Analysis of Substance Abuse on Cape Cod: A Baseline Assessment.  View the Full Report and the Executive Summary.

 

The purpose of this report is to provide a snapshot of substance dependency, and the related costs, for Barnstable County, Massachusetts. It has been created to inform programming and policy needs to be defined by the Barnstable County Regional Substance Abuse Council.  The Council's goal is that Barnstable County will have a coordinated and comprehensive regional approach to substance abuse across the continuum of prevention, treatment and recovery, harms reduction and law enforcement.

BARNSTABLE COUNTY SEEKS COORDINATOR FOR THE MASSACHUSETTS OPIOID ABUSE PREVENTION COLLABORATIVE

Barnstable County, through its Chief Procurement Officer and on behalf of the Department of Human Services, seeks a qualified contractor to assist the Department in coordinating the "Massachusetts Opioid Abuse Prevention Collaborative" (MOAPC) in Barnstable County.

GERONTOLOGY INTENSIVE WORKSHOP SERIES

Register today for the Gerontology Intensive Workshop Series at Cape Cod Community College 

 

The Barnstable County Department of Human Services is proud to sponsor the upcoming 2015 Gerontology Intensive Workshop Series created by the Workforce Education Resource Center (WERC) at Cape Cod Community College.
  

This interdisciplinary workshop series is for service providers who currently work or would like to work with older adults. Learn a focused, practical approach to understanding, assessing, and intervening with a variety of service concerns affecting older adults and their caregivers.  The series covers major topic areas in gerontology including:

 

The 10-week series will be held every Wednesday from 5pm - 7:30pm at the Hyannis Center (540 Main Street) beginning April 8th and ending June 10th.  Attendees may register for as few or as many workshops as they wish. Continuing Education Units (20-25) and certificate are available for those attending eight of the ten workshops.  (Nurses must attend all ten workshops.)

NEWS FROM THE EASTHAM COUNCIL ON AGING

The Friends of the Eastham Council on Aging Thrift Shop is located on the corner of Massasoit Rd. and Oak Rd. in North Eastham.  Currently the shop is open from 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and the occasional Monday.  Used items may be dropped off at the shop on Wednesdays from 9 - 11:00 AM.  If you would like to volunteer in the Thrift Shop please call 508/255-9896.

VETERANS FOR PEACE, CAPE COD

Attached please find information on an event on April 4 which will contribute greatly to our understanding of the Cape Cod veterans we serve.  The broadened perspective to be gained from this event will enable us to better comprehend the human experience of our recently returning veterans and their families. It will equip us with the information we need to better advocate within our community for the understanding and appropriate response which an ethical society owes to these men and women.

CAPE COD EXPO

Falmouth Track Club presents the Cape Cod Expo on Saturday, April 11 from 12 - 4:30 PM at Ballymeade Country Club, 125 Falmouth Woods Rd., East Falmouth.  This family focused event will include a variety of indoor and outdoor instruction and demonstrations of wellness activities and sports, taste samplings from local restaurants and expo booths with local and national business offerings for healthy and active living.

 

Entry is FREE with donations appreciated.  Following this event a dinner is offered from 5-7 PM.  Advance dinner tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for ages 12 and under.  Tickets also available at the door.  View flyer.

NEWS FROM GOSNOLD ON CAPE COD

Gosnold & Falmouth Police Team up for High School Social Host LessonOn April 1, Gosnold's Prevention Division will team up with the Falmouth Police Department to present a Social Host lesson on underage drinking prevention to freshman health classes at Falmouth High School. The students will fill out a brief freshman alcohol survey, and take home a mandatory assignment on the Social Host Law to be completed with a parent or guardian.

 

Gosnold ScholarshipGosnold on Cape Cod, is offering a $2,500 scholarship to a graduating Cape Cod senior who has been accepted and is entering college in the Fall of 2015.  The student must plan to major in psychology, social work or another field of study that is relevant to addiction and/or mental health.

This documentary tells the stories of addicts, families, law enforcement, clinicians, and community leaders who are affected by addiction and recovery on The Cape.  Don't miss the opportunity to experience this powerful documentary and meet the local filmmakers, Sam Tarplin and Nate Robertson.

FAMILY BEREAVEMENT PROGRAM
FOR SUICIDE LOSS & AT RISK ONLINE TRAINING FOR SCHOOL EDUCATORS

Through a partnership with Kognito Interactive, the MDPH Suicide Prevention Program is engaging in a pilot program to provide FREE on-line training for high school and middle school staff to recognize At-Risk youth and manage conversation with the student with the goal of connecting them with the appropriate support.  Read more...

TITLE V MATERNAL & CHILD HEALTH NEEDS ASSESSMENT

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) is conducting its five-year Title V Maternal & Child Health Needs Assessment.  As part of the Needs Assessment, we are conducting a survey of families of children & youth with special health care needsFamily input is critical.  The information from the survey will help us to improve services and supports for children and youth ages birth through 24 years with special health care needs and their families.  Read more...

HOUSING REHAB PROGRAM

The Community Development Partnership is seeking qualified homeowners and landlords in Harwich Center and Dennisport who need home repairs. Through the organization's Housing Rehabilitation Program, funds of up to $35,000 are available to make home repairs. ACCESS TO HEALTH INSURANCE
STILL AVAILABLE

ACCESS TO HEALTH INSURANCE IS STILL AVAILABLE:  You can apply and enroll in MassHealth at any time during the year. If you are newly eligible for ConnectorCare Plans (subsidized public health insurance*), you can apply and enroll at any time during the year.  You may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period if you have Qualifying Life Events, such as a marriage, having a baby, losing a job, new Massachusetts resident, etc. (Need to apply and enroll within 60 days of the event.)

 

If you are currently on MassHealth and received a Renewal Notice, it is important to enroll by the deadline noted in your letter from MassHealth or you may experience time without health insurance.  View flyer.

MEALS ON WHEELS VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

NATIONAL MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS SOCIETY  FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAM

The Greater New England Chapter'S Financial Assistance Program aims to support independence, safety, health, and quality of life for people living with MS. We support needs in the following categories: air conditioners; transportation to medical appointments; emergency needs; short-term counseling; home and auto modifications; medical equipment; and home and respite care. We also help to identify other potential funding sources.

 

Eligibility: Any person diagnosed with MS, living in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, or Vermont, may apply for financial assistance. A person is eligible to receive financial assistance from the Greater New England Chapter once per year. All applications must be approved before the purchase of goods and/or services. Health Imperatives sponsors training opportunities through their GLYS Program.  Training topics include:  Welcoming all Genders: LGBTQ 101; Supporting LGBTQ Families, & Providing Culturally Competent Care for Patients/Clients.  Gay Lesbian Youth Support (GLYS) trainings are designed for youth focused agencies and organizations that want to enhance their support of young LGBTQ clients.

 

Most trainings are 3 hours but can be easily customized for your needs.  CEU's are available for Social Workers and Licensed Mental Health Counselors.  Scholarships available for those who qualify.

PARKINSON SUPPORT NETWORK OF CAPE COD

The American Parkinson Disease Association (APDA) is pleased to announce that the Parkinson Support Network of Cape Cod (PSN) has been designated a Branch of the American Parkinson Disease Association, Massachusetts Chapter.  This relationship will bring increased education, services, and awareness to the Cape through the APDA Chapter's access to professionals and lay volunteers dedicated to providing speciality services supporting those with Parkinson's.

 

The Parkinson Support Network was founded in 2009 by Joyce Ginouves of Cotuit, following her husband Paul's diagnosis with Parkinson's.  She recognized the need for additional services for the nearly one thousand families living with Parkinson's on Cape Cod.  Read more...

SAMARITAN SURVIVOR SUPPORT GROUPS

VETERANS CRISIS HOTLINE

The Veterans Crisis Line (1-800-273-8255, Press 1) is available 24/7/365 to provide confidential counseling and referrals for Veterans and their families.  This is an integrated national outreach effort to increase awareness and use of the Veterans Crisis Line, support and promote broader VA suicide prevention efforts, and promote help-seeking behaviors among Veterans at risk of suicide and other mental health problems.

The Barnstable County Department of Human Services website find.bchumanservices.net features on-line directories of health and human service resources. The Directories are a compilation of local resources organized around areas of critical need such as food, housing, energy/fuel assistance, and services for seniors and people with disabilities. Find.bchumanservices.net is a valuable resource now available to Barnstable County residents and human service organizations. This new on-line tool is an effective and efficient way to make local information available on a 'simple to search' website.

The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) has designated Mass 2-1-1 as the official point of contact for receiving information during a time of crisis or weather emergency.
