Welcome to the information E-Newsletter from the Barnstable County Department of Human Services.  This newsletter is designed to provide timely information on health and human service topics of interest for people living and working in Barnstable County.  For additional information visit the Department website at bchumanservices.net
HEALTH COVERAGE APPLICATION ASSISTANCE
Open enrollment: November 15, 2014 - February 15, 2015

 

Members who are currently enrolled with Commonwealth Care, MSP, Temporary coverage, or a QHP will need to re-apply by December 23, 2014 to avoid a loss of coverage.

 

Community Action Committee of Cape Cod & the Islands is available to inform and assist individuals on how they may qualify for affordable health coverage and help with enrollment in new programs or re-enrollment in existing programs.

Navigators will be available for application assistance in our Falmouth Office, Jones Rd. 8am-4pm 9/30, 10/14, 10/28, and 11/25 or the Falmouth Service Center 10am-2pm 10/7, 10/21, 11/4, and 11/18 by appointment only.

SPAULDING REHABILITATION CAPE COD EXPANDS ADAPTIVE SPORTS PROGRAMS

Beginning on January 17th and continuing January 31, February 14 & 28, Spaulding's Adaptive Sports Centers (SASC) will offer four sessions of wheelchair basketball for youth and adults from 10:00 AM - Noon at the Hyannis Youth and Community Center, 141 Basset Lane in Hyannis.  This pilot program is supported by a $100,000 donation from Chatham Philanthropist Walter Meier.  His gift will also allow SCC to be the departure point for Spaulding Ski Club trips to Loon Mountain on February 7th and Waterville Valley on March 7, to offer simulator golf (indoor adapted golf) starting in February and to pilot wheelchair tennis in the spring.  Read more...   Pre-registration is required.  To pre-register and for more information call Spaulding Adaptive Sports Centers at 877/976-7272.

OFFERS WORKSHOP FOR PARENTS OF SELECTIVE EATERS
For parents of children with feeding issues this
cooking workshop will teach parents proven food modification and feeding strategies to use at home.  The FREE workshop is offered on the 3rd Tuesday of the month beginning Tuesday January 20th from 6-7:30 P.M. and will be held at the Center's newly expanded "Kitchen Clinic" located at Spaulding Center for Children, 280-D Route 130 (Heritage Park Plaza) in Forestdale.  Classes will be limited to six participants and pre-registration is required. Read more ...   For more information or to pre-register call Spaulding for Children at 508/833-1060.
CAPE-WIDE FORUM: DIVERSE LEARNING STYLES OF STUDENTS

The Barnstable Public Schools and the Peter & Elizabeth C. Tower Foundation present a Cape-wide Forum for Parents and professionals:  Understanding and Addressing the Diverse Learning Styles of Students with Attachment and Trauma Related Difficulties.  The Forum will be held on Wednesday, January 21st, 6:30 - 8:00 PM at the West Villages Elementary Tynan Auditorium, 760 Osterville West Barnstable Rd., Marstons Mills.  The program is is free of charge and all Cape-wide are invited to attend with no registration required. Read more ...

CHAMPIONS FOR HEALTHY KIDS
GRANT PROGRAM

The goal of the Champions grants program is to encourage communities in the United States to partner with Registered Dietitian Nutritionists to improve the eating and physical activity patterns of youth, ages 2-18. 

 

50 Grants of $20,000 will be awarded to agencies working with communities that demonstrate the greatest need and likelihood of sustainable impact on young people's nutrition and activity levels through innovative programs.  Submission deadline is January 23, 2015.  Links to the program guidance and online application are available on the program website.

2015: YOUR YEAR TO VOLUNTEER - The Samaritans on Cape Cod and the Islands will be conducting a Senior Outreach Volunteer Training in January. Senior Outreach volunteers make outgoing calls to seniors once a week in order to keep them connected to their communities. Through active listening, volunteers afford seniors the respect and dignity they deserve, and the confidential relationships that are established are vital. BARNSTABLE ADULT SUPPORTIVE DAY PROGRAM CAREGIVER SERIES

Caring for the Alzheimer's Caregiver: A Primer:  January 27, 2015, 1-2:30 PM, Barnstable Senior Center, 825 Falmouth Rd., Hyannis.

 

This presentation will discuss the current research concerning caregiving, strategies, and interventions for support of caregivers and the work of the Alzheimer's Family Support Center of Cape Cod.  Read more...

TOWN OF BARNSTABLE CDBG PROGRAM

The Town of Barnstable Growth Management Department seeks input from the community as they prepare the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Consolidated Plan.  The Consolidated Plan, which will be in effect for five (5) years from July 1, 2015 to June 30, 2020, identifies community housing and development needs and presents strategies to address those needs. 

 

Please help prioritize these needs by completing the survey which will be available until January 30, 2015 or download a printable copy of the survey in English, Spanish or Portuguese.  Paper copies of the survey are available at the Growth Management Department at Barnstable Town Hall, 367 Main Street, 3rd Floor, Hyannis. Survey results will be included in the Plan.  By mid-April a draft plan will be available at www.townofbarnstable.us/cdbg. Addressing early symptoms of addiction - Cape Cod Times 12/7/14:  For about a year, Gosnold has been offering private therapy in six different schools on the Cape.  Gosnold's therapists are the next step, beyond what school staff has time to provide, said Gina Hurley, Barnstable's Director of Student Services.  These services are paid for by the student's own insurance plus grants to cover any insurance gaps.  Read more...

 

New program seeks to short-circuit addiction before it starts - Martha's Vineyard Times 12/22/14: A pilot program, developed at Gosnold and funded in part by the Tower Foundation and the Bilezikian Family Foundation, is sending five licensed clinical social workers into 10 schools at all levels on the Cape.  Read more...

Gosnold Awarded the Health Care Workforce Transformation Fund Training Grant by the Commonwealth Corporation.  The initiative will significantly expand and improve staff recruitment, training and development capacity.
  
Gosnold Teams up with Yarmouth Police Department Command Staff to develop and establish an innovative working partnership between Law Enforcement and Addiction Healthcare designed to help addicts and their families receive the help and support they need.  Members of the Yarmouth P.D. Proactive Anti-Crime Unit will work directly with specially trained Gosnold Counselors to offer professional support and assistance to Yarmouth residents in need.
CHNA 27 MINI-GRANT RFP

CHNA 27 is offering mini-grants up to $5,000 to CHNA membership organizations ONLY that are nonprofit or public entities.  Not sure if you are a CHNA member, contact Kimberly Perry at chna27cape@gmail.com.

TWO AFFORDABLE RENTAL HOUSING LOTTERIES IN EASTHAM

The Community Development Partnership (CDP) is currently accepting applications for two affordable rental housing lotteries in Eastham.  One is a one-bedroom rental home at 17 Dory Lane (Brackett Landing) and the second is a single family three-bedroom unit at 1195 Massasoit Road. 

 

Information sessions will be held on Wednesday, January 14th 

from 5-6:00 PM and on Saturday, January 17th from 10-11:00 AM at the CDP conference Room, 3 Main Street Mercantile, Unit 8, Eastham. Application deadline February 16th.

 

A lottery will be held on Wednesday, March 18, 2015 at 10:00 AM to determine the order in which eligible applications are reviewed.  Read more...

SEXUAL ASSAULT SERVICES CULTURALLY SPECIFIC GRANT PROGRAM

The Sexual Assault Services Culturally Specific Grant Program awards funding to nonprofit organizations that offer culturally specific sexual assault services.  Applicants should demonstrate how they would overcome cultural and linguistic barriers facing survivors of sexual assault in underserved populations. Private nonprofit organizations that focus primarily on culturally specific communities are eligible to apply.  Submission deadline February 24, 2015.  View program website for more information.

ART CONTEST GETS KIDS ACROSS CAPE COD THINKING ABOUT HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS

The month of February is National Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month and Independence House wants teens on Cape Cod to think about what healthy relationships look and feel like.

 

Across Cape Cod, submissions are requested from middle and high school aged students in the form of drawings, paintings, collages, poetry, short stories, paper cutting, photography and more.  A gallery-style display of all submissions will be presented at an event on February 26, 2015 from 6-8:00 P.M. at the Hilton by Doubletree in Hyannis.  Read more...

CARES EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT PROGRAM LED BY HOPE DEMENTIA & ALZHEIMER'S SERVICES

CARES provides an opportunity for people with memory impairment and their care partners to participate in two separate support groups - held simultaneously.  One group provides information, guidance and respite to caregivers while the other provides conversation and socialization for those with memory impairment.

DANCE IN THE RAIN: PEER SERVICES

Dance in the Rain is a peer to peer service helping people ages 14 and older who have mental illness or dual diagnosis who live on the Cape & Islands.  You don't have to belong to any provider service to attend any of the meetings.  View support group schedule.

On March 4, 2015, the Cape Cod Center for Women (CCCW) will be hosting its annual Jeans and Jewels Jubilee to celebrate the shelter's 15th anniversary.  The event will take place at the Sea Crest Beach Hotel in North Falmouth.  Event will include a night filled with live music, hors d'oeuvres, entree stations, raffles and silent and live auctions to benefit women and children fleeing domestic violence.

OUNCE OF PREVENTION 2015 CONFERENCE

HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS, SEXUALITY AND DISABILITY RESOURCE GUIDE
The newly revised Healthy Relationships, Sexuality and Disability Resource Guide from the Department of Public Health and the Department of Developmental Services is now available online at www.mass.gov/dph/healthysexuality in both color and black and white (as well as modifiable MS word document) to help connect people living with disabilities with valuable health information.  A promotional guide is also attached to help you share these resources via social media, program websites and communications.
NEWS FROM CAPE MEDIATION

Search for a New Director:  On March 1st, Nancy Fleming will retire as Executive Director of Cape Mediation.  The Board of Directors is currently conducting interviews for her successor and hope to select the new director by February 1, 2015.

 

How do parents transfer their real estate to avoid a family crisis?:  Aging parents often have no idea how to divide up their real estate.  In many cases they will let their children decide amongst themselves after they are gone.  This can be a recipe for disaster.  Learn more about various options to this process.

NEWS FROM INDEPENDENCE HOUSE

Independence House launches "Abuse in Later Life" program for Yarmouth Residents:  Through support from the Town of Yarmouth Health Department services will be provided for victims of domestic and sexual violence age 50 and over living in Yarmouth.  Services will include specialized support groups, safety planning and coordination and collaboration with organizations who are serving older adults.

 

Beginning Wednesday, February 4th, Independence House will provide a Domestic Violence support group at Falmouth Human Services (FHS) in collaboration with FHS.

 

Independence House continues to offer a wide array of support groups to Address Sexual Assault, Domestic Violence, Seeking Safety, Parent Support, Teen Support, Children's Support, Secondary Survivors of Domestic & Sexual Assault support as well as education, prevention and outreach.  Visit the Independence House website to learn more.

The Gosnold Reaching Out program is a resource for family members and loved ones affected by addiction.  It assists the family at all stages of addiction through education, intervention, and support.  Weekly support groups are held at the following locations:

  • Gosnold Counseling Center, 1185 Falmouth Rd., Centerville on Tuesdays, 6-7:30 PM
  • Gus Canty Community Center, 790 Main St., Falmouth on Wednesdays, 6-7:30 PM
  • Falmouth Hospital - Faxon Center, 100 Ter Heun Dr., Falmouth on Sundays, 4-5:00 PM

SAMARITAN SURVIVOR SUPPORT GROUPS

Over 800,000 people worldwide end their lives annually leaving parents, children, siblings, aunts, uncles, grandparents, grandchildren and close friends who deeply feel the devastation of each loss.  Samaritans on Cape Cod & the Islands has survivor support groups in Falmouth and Hyannis.  These groups honor and respect the needs of the survivors, provide unconditional emotional support, help survivors gain courage and comfort from one another, and deal with a unique grief that is often not understood by others.

VETERANS CRISIS HOTLINE

The Veterans Crisis Line (1-800-273-8255, Press 1) is available 24/7/365 to provide confidential counseling and referrals for Veterans and their families.  This is an integrated national outreach effort to increase awareness and use of the Veterans Crisis Line, support and promote broader VA suicide prevention efforts, and promote help-seeking behaviors among Veterans at risk of suicide and other mental health problems.

The Barnstable County Department of Human Services website find.bchumanservices.net features on-line directories of health and human service resources. The Directories are a compilation of local resources organized around areas of critical need such as food, housing, energy/fuel assistance, and services for seniors and people with disabilities. Find.bchumanservices.net is a valuable resource now available to Barnstable County residents and human service organizations. This new on-line tool is an effective and efficient way to make local information available on a 'simple to search' website.

Is your organization listed on 2-1-1?  If not, take some time and list it today!
  • Do you provide health or human services on Cape Cod or the Islands?

The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) has designated Mass 2-1-1 as the official point of contact for receiving information during a time of crisis or weather emergency.
