CHILL YOUR BILL
With increasing energy bills this winter and over the next few years, learn how you can save on your energy bill.  Cape Light Compact has several low or no-cost ways that help reduce your energy consumption.  Visit the Cape Light Compact website and learn how to "Chill Your Bill".
HEALTH COVERAGE APPLICATION ASSISTANCE
Open enrollment: November 15, 2014 - February 15, 2015

 

Members who are currently enrolled with Commonwealth Care, MSP, Temporary coverage, or a QHP will need to re-apply by December 23, 2014 to avoid a loss of coverage.

 

Community Action Committee of Cape Cod & the Islands is available to inform and assist individuals on how they may qualify for affordable health coverage and help with enrollment in new programs or re-enrollment in existing programs.

Navigators will be available for application assistance in our Falmouth Office, Jones Rd. 8am-4pm 9/30, 10/14, 10/28, and 11/25 or the Falmouth Service Center 10am-2pm 10/7, 10/21, 11/4, and 11/18 by appointment only.

SAMARITANS SEEK ASSISTANT DIRECTOR

The Samaritans on Cape Cod and the Islands seeks an Assistant Director.  This is a part-time salaried position that reports to the Executive Director.  Seeking an individual who can be a strong, dedicated, and flexible member of the organization.  The qualified applicant will have good written communication, interpersonal, and public speaking skills and experience with volunteer training and management preferred.  Knowledge of social media marketing a plus!  Read more...

2015: YOUR YEAR TO VOLUNTEER - The Samaritans on Cape Cod and the Islands will be conducting a Senior Outreach Volunteer Training in January. Senior Outreach volunteers make outgoing calls to seniors once a week in order to keep them connected to their communities. Through active listening, volunteers afford seniors the respect and dignity they deserve, and the confidential relationships that are established are vital. ART CONTEST GETS KIDS ACROSS CAPE COD THINKING ABOUT HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS

The month of February is National Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month and Independence House wants teens on Cape Cod to think about what healthy relationships look and feel like.

 

Across Cape Cod, submissions are requested from middle and high school aged students in the form of drawings, paintings, collages, poetry, short stories, paper cutting, photography and more.  A gallery-style display of all submissions will be presented at an event on February 26, 2015 from 6-8:00 P.M. at the Hilton by Doubletree in Hyannis.  Read more...

RSVP/SENIOR CORPS VOLUNTEER PROGRAM

RSVP/Senior Corps of Elder Services of Cape Cod and the Islands is America's largest volunteer network for people age 55 and over.  For over 20 years we have paired senior volunteers like you with meaningful opportunities in your  community that match their skills and interests.  From building houses to educating children to protecting the environment to supporting seniors in your community-RSVP Senior  Corps volunteers are making a difference!

 

RSVP/Senior Corps on Cape Cod partners with over 90 non-profit organizations helping to recruit volunteers, while providing supplemental volunteer liability insurance, some mileage reimbursement and recognition.  YOU choose HOW, WHERE and WHEN you want to serve.  We help to find the opportunity that is right for YOU.

EASTHAM SENIOR CENTER HAPPENINGS
Lots of news and activities happening at the Eastham Senior Center in January and February.  Activities include income tax preparation services, a visit from an elder law attorney, blood pressure screenings, sight loss support group, and much much more.  View the Eastham Senior Center January newsletter for details on all activities.
BARNSTABLE SENIOR CENTER ACTIVITIES

Programs and activities include computer classes, Facebook for grandparents, exercise & fitness classes, and much more.  Read more on the Brown Bag program for Seniors... a free bag of groceries once a month containing basic, healthy foods. 

 

Do you know someone who could benefit from the Barnstable Adult Supportive Day Program.  This program is designed to provide supportive, professional services and engaging activities for elders who cannot or do not wish to stay alone at home during the day.  Fees are income based and transportation may be available for Barnstable residents.  Call 508/862-4765 for more information.

THE COALITION FOR CHILDREN PROGRAMS AND ACTIVITIES
Parents and Educators from any community are welcome to attend workshops in each of the four Upper Cape towns unless otherwise noted.  Activities include free play groups for children birth to school age, literacy event for preschoolers, parent workshops, free effective parenting classes, Dads, Babies & Pizza workshop, and much more.  For a full listing of activities read the Coalition for Children newsletter.
THE BRIDGE BACK TO WORK PROGRAM 

The Mature Workers Program has immediate openings for income-eligible people age 55 and older who are seeking a "Bridge Back to Work".  If you are in transition due to job loss, relocation, family illness or another reason, and you want to re-enter the workforce, the Mature Workers program can help.  We provide a variety of supports including a paid internship placement with a local non-profit government agency.  Use your skills and learn new ones while serving your community.  Work 20 hours per week and gain work experience for employment in the workforce again.

 

If you are a non-profit or governmental agency, this program can help you.   Call to learn how our interns can be of assistance to your organization.  This Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) is a Department of Labor, federally funded program.

WEEKLY FAMILY SUPPORT GROUPS 

The Gosnold Reaching Out program is a resource for family members and loved ones affected by addiction.  It assists the family at all stages of addiction through education, intervention, and support.  Weekly support groups are held at the following locations:

  • Gosnold Counseling Center, 1185 Falmouth Rd., Centerville on Tuesdays, 6-7:30 PM
  • Gus Canty Community Center, 790 Main St., Falmouth on Wednesdays, 6-7:30 PM
  • Falmouth Hospital - Faxon Center, 100 Ter Heun Dr., Falmouth on Sundays, 4-5:00 PM

SAMARITAN SURVIVOR SUPPORT GROUPS

Over 800,000 people worldwide end their lives annually leaving parents, children, siblings, aunts, uncles, grandparents, grandchildren and close friends who deeply feel the devastation of each loss.  Samaritans on Cape Cod & the Islands has survivor support groups in Falmouth and Hyannis.  These groups honor and respect the needs of the survivors, provide unconditional emotional support, help survivors gain courage and comfort from one another, and deal with a unique grief that is often not understood by others.

VETERANS CRISIS HOTLINE

The Veterans Crisis Line (1-800-273-8255, Press 1) is available 24/7/365 to provide confidential counseling and referrals for Veterans and their families.  This is an integrated national outreach effort to increase awareness and use of the Veterans Crisis Line, support and promote broader VA suicide prevention efforts, and promote help-seeking behaviors among Veterans at risk of suicide and other mental health problems.

RESOURCE DIRECTORIES

The Barnstable County Department of Human Services website find.bchumanservices.net features on-line directories of health and human service resources. The Directories are a compilation of local resources organized around areas of critical need such as food, housing, energy/fuel assistance, and services for seniors and people with disabilities. Find.bchumanservices.net is a valuable resource now available to Barnstable County residents and human service organizations. This new on-line tool is an effective and efficient way to make local information available on a 'simple to search' website.

 

If you believe your organization should be included in any of the new Directories or have any other feedback on how to improve the on-line directories, call the Department of Human Services at 508/375-6628.

MASS 2-1-1 RESOURCE LOCATOR
Is your organization listed on 2-1-1?  If not, take some time and list it today!
  • Do you provide health or human services on Cape Cod or the Islands?
  • Does the public know what services you provide?
  • Do people know how to access your services?
  • Do you need assistance in finding services for your clients?  
MASS 2-1-1 is a free, confidential, 24/7 information and referral database and hotline for access to health and human services for consumers and providers.  Multi-lingual translations are also available.  To locate services dial 211 or 1-877-211-MASS on your telephone or go to www.mass211help.org
  
The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) has designated Mass 2-1-1 as the official point of contact for receiving information during a time of crisis or weather emergency.
