NEWS FROM GOSNOLD ON CAPE COD
October is National Substance Abuse Prevention Month
Gosnold on Cape Cod will be placing ads in local papers over the next two weeks to highlight National Substance Abuse Prevention Month.

The first ad focuses on the importance of properly disposing of unused prescription drugs in the kiosks in every police station on Cape Cod.  It is part of an ongoing Gosnold campaign promoting the use of the kiosks.

The second ad reminds parents that it is illegal to serve or provide alcohol to anyone under 21 or allow them to drink in their home or propery.

For more information, contact Gosnold's prevention division at (508) 540-2317 or visit www.gosnold.org
NARCAN TRAINING
Free Narcan training to be offered in Mashpee by AIDS Support Group
Monday, November 3, 2014 - 6:30 PM
The Boys & Girls Club of Cape Cod

The Boys & Girls Club of Cape Cod, located at 31 Frank E. Hicks Drive in Mashpee, will host a free Narcan training and overdose prevention education session at 6:30 PM on November 3rd.  The session will be presented by the AIDS Support Group of Cape Cod.

Narcan can reverse a potentially fatal opiate or heroin overdose, but individuals must be certified to administer the drug to keep it in their home or business.  This session will provide that training and certification, as well as a free Narcan kit from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.  Attendees will also learn about risks for overdose and how to recognize and respond to an overdose.

For more information, call the Boys & Girls Club at (508) 477-8845 or the AIDS Support Group at (508) 487-9445. To view the Cape Cod Times notice detailing this event, click here.

RESEARCH AND REPORTS
Emergency department visits linked to "synthetic marijuana" products rising

Synthetic cannabinoids are substances that are not derived from the marijuana plant but purport to have the same effect as the marijuana. These synthetic cannabinoids are known by such street names as "K2" or "Spice," and contain varying amounts of different ingredients -- including contaminants that can result in the products having unpredictable effects on users.

From 2010 to 2011 the number of emergency department visits involving synthetic cannabinoids more than doubled. Visits rose from 11,406 in 2010 to 28,531 in 2011, according to a new report by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).
