The October meeting of the Barnstable County Regional Substance Abuse Council has been canceled.  The next meeting of the Council will be on November 6th, 2014.

Barnstable County Human Services Launches Behavioral Health Website & Service Directory 

The Barnstable County Department of Human Services is pleased to announce the launch of a new Behavioral Health Website and Service Directory.


 
"The Barnstable County Behavioral Health website provides much needed information about behavioral health services in our region in a centralized and comprehensive way" said Beth Albert, Director of Barnstable County Human Services.

 

Key features of the web site include:

  • Comprehensive service directory that enables consumers to easily locate the local programs and services they need most
  • Quick reference to all local emergency and crisis intervention programs in the area
  • Access to more than 30,000 articles, fact sheets, and interactive tools
  • Up-to-date information on the latest developments in behavioral health via an online learning center, daily nationwide news updates, advocacy tools, and state and federal legislation tracing.

BEHAVIORAL HEALTH PROVIDERS COALITION
Cape and Islands Behavioral Health Summit 
October 3, 2014 - 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM
Resort and Conference Center - Hyannis
 
The Behavioral Health Providers Coalition of Cape Cod invites you to attend the 2nd annual Cape and Islands Behavioral Health Summit.  The focus of the summit this year will be co-occurring disorders.  Continuing education credits and CMEs will be available.

Registration has been extended and walk-in spots may be available on the day of the event.

NEWS FROM SAMHSA
National survey shows lower rates of illicit drug use among adolescents ages 12 to 17
The rate of current illicit drug use was lower among adolescents aged 12 to 17 in 2013 (8.8%) than 2012 (9.5%) and 2002 (11.6%) according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's (SAMHSA) National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) report. 

SAMHSA's NSDUH report also found that between 2002 and 2013, the level of youth aged 12 to 17 with substance dependence or abuse problems decreased from 8.9 percent to 5.2 percent.

Reports highlight the importance or workplace programs for addressing substance use disorders

Two Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) reports show that while many employers have policies and programs addressing substance use disorders, many of the 10.8 million full-time workers with these problems may not be receiving help in the workplace.

 

Current illicit substance users comprise 9.5 percent of the nation's full-time workforce.

EDUCATION OPPORTUNITY
Addiction Medicine CME Course
The Division on Addiction is pleased to announce their upcoming course, Addiction Medicine: A Case-based Approach to the Integrated Treatment of Addictive Disorders and Other Mental and Medical Conditions to be held October 10-11, 2014 at the Revere Hotel Boston Common

This year's course will feature national addiction medicine experts including Dr. John Renner, Dr. Marc Potenza, Dr. Bertha Madras and many others. Michael Botticelli, Acting Director of National Drug Control Policy, will provide the keynote address for this course. 

This course will help keep physicians, nurses, psychologists, and other allied health professionals up to date with the research within the field of Addiction Medicine. We sincerely hope to see you at our course this year.

Statewide Substance Abuse Prevention Conference

Thursday, October 30, 2014

 

On October 30, 2014, the Massachusetts Technical Partnership for Prevention (MassTAPP) will host a Statewide Substance Abuse Prevention Conference for coalitions and community representatives. 

 

Our keynote speaker, Dr. Rodney Wambeam of the University of Wyoming, will address the complexities of evaluating environmental strategies, and the lunch plenary session will address the issue of stigma. There will also be a number of breakout sessions on topics such as opioid overdose prevention, prescription drug misuse prevention, policy and practice change, evaluation and data collection, cultural and linguistic responsiveness, partnerships and sustainability, youth development, and many more.

GOSNOLD FAMILY SUPPORT GROUPS
The Gosnold Reaching Out program is a resource for family members and loved ones affected by addiction. It assists the family at all stages of addiction through education, intervention, and support. 

Information and Education Forums help family members gain a basic understanding of the signs and symptoms of addiction, treatment options, and stages of recovery. An educated and supportive family has a positive impact on treatment outcomes.

SELF-HELP HIGHLIGHTS
Learn to Cope  
Learn to Cope is a support group for parents, family members, spouses, and caregivers who have a family member who is addicted to opiates, alcohol, or other drugs.

Learn to Cope offers experienced facilitators, resources, informational material, guest speakers (in long term recovery or professionals in the field), overdose education, and Narcan enrollment at all weekly meetings.  

Weekly meetings are held on Tuesdays 7:00-8:30 PM at the Yarmouth Police Station, One Brad Erickson Way. For more information call (508) 738-5148 or visit their website.

Parents Helping Parents 
*Please note new meeting location*
Parents Supporting Parents is a group of people who have come together as parents and family members coping and dealing with children/loved one's addiction.

Their mission is to support, strengthen, and educate one another as they share their lives.  Their goal is to help their loved ones find and live in recovery, and for all members to live a healthy lifestyle.

Weekly meetings are held on Monday 6:30-8:30 PM upstairs at the Ballymeade Country Club in East Falmouth. To learn more, view the Parents Supporting Parents Facebook page.

Mothers Helping Mothers
Mothers Helping Mothers is a support group for women struggling with the emotional difficulties associated with addiction and recovery during the pregnant and postpartum phases of life.

Free childcare is provided during the meetings by The Children's Study Home.  Anyone planning on attending the meeting and needing childcare is asked to call ahead.  All ages are welcome. 

Weekly meetings are held every
Tuesday 7:30-9:00 PM at the John Wesley Methodist Church in Falmouth at 270 Gifford Street.  For more information, contact Deborah at (774) 392-0446 or Danielle at (508) 209-7533.

Alateen
Alateen is a fellowship of young Al-Anon members, usually teenagers, whose lives have been affected by someone else's drinking.  
 
There are two regular meetings run by Cape Cod Alateen: 
 
Wednesday - 7:00-8:00 PM in S. Dennis:  Church of the Nazarene, 209 Upper County Rd.
Friday - 7:30 - 8:45 PM in Cataumet:  Cataumet Methodist Church, 1091 County Rd.

Nar-Anon
Nar-Anon Family Groups is a twelve step fellowship that offers a recovery program for those affected by someone's addiction.  The only requirement for membership is that there be a problem of addiction in a relative or friend.

Nar-Anon is adapted from Narcotics Anonymous and uses Nar-Anon's Twelve Steps, Twelve Traditions, and Twelve Concepts.  Weekly meetings are held Friday nights 6:00-7:00 PM at St. David's Episcopal Church in South Yarmouth.  For more information, visit the Nar-Anon website.
