CHARLIE WILKERSON MEMORIAL LECTURE SERIES

The Charlie Wilkerson Memorial Fund was created by Charlie's family to educate families and help them better understand and cope with addiction. 

 

The New Science on Addiction: Stigma, Treatment, and Recovery lecture will be held on Thursday, September 25, 2014, 6 - 8:00 PM at the Sea Crest Beach Hotel, Ocean View Room, 350 Quaker Rd, North Falmouth.  Opening remarks by Raymond Tamasi, President of Gosnold on Cape Cod and featured presenter is Dr. John Kelly, Ph.D.  View flyer for more information.

GOSNOLD ON CAPE COD WEEKLY FAMILY SUPPORT GROUPS 

The Gosnold Reaching Out program is a resource for family members and loved ones affected by addiction.  It assists the family at all stages of addiction through education, intervention, and support.

 

Weekly support groups available:

  • Gus Canty Community Center, 790 Main St., Falmouth on Wednesdays, 6-7:30 PM

HEALTHY EATING FOR SUCCESSFUL LIVING

Elder Services of Cape Cod and the Islands, Inc. will be offering a free, six week class on Healthy Eating for Successful Living for adults age 60+ or their caregivers, who want to learn how nutrition and lifestyle changes can promote better health.  Respite funds are available for caregivers.

OUTCOMES MANAGEMENT: AN INTRODUCTION WORKSHOP
Join the Massachusetts Nonprofit Network and the Cape Cod Foundation at this event designed to help nonprofits navigate the increasingly important topic of Outcomes Management

ADDICTION MEDICINE CME COURSE
Addiction Medicine CME course will be held on October 10-11 in Boston at the Revere Hotel Boston Common.  This course features a Case-based Approach to the Integrated Treatment of Addictive Disorders and Other Mental and Medical Conditions featuring national addiction medicine experts.  This course will help keep physicians, nurses, psychologists and other allied health professionals up to date with the research within the field of Addiction Medicine. October 15: Open House and Volunteer Fair.  CCV is opening an office at the Yarmouth Senior Center.  Open House and Volunteer Fair, in partnership with the Yarmouth Senior Center, on the afternoon of Wednesday, October 15.   We are inviting Mid-Cape and Cape-wide organizations to host information tables; if you are interested in participating, please contact Sharon Howard.  Space is limited; participation is on a first come, first serve basis.

ENGAGING YOUTH IN ALCOHOL PREVENTION TRAINING IN BOSTON
This training, co-facilitated by Blake Works and Health Resources in Action (HRiA) is scheduled for November 17 & 18, 2014 from 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM at HRiA, 95 Berkeley St., Boston and will build upon your knowledge and skills to more effectively communicate about underage drinking with young people (grades 5-12).  Participants will learn how to implement and utilize Alcohol: True Stories Hosted by Matt Damon with groups of young people and groups of parents/other caring adults.  In addition, learn strategies for engaging youth in substance abuse activities, coalitions and policy change.  Read more and register.

October 7, 2:00 PM and 5:30 PM - Community Forums: The Barnstable Senior Center has partnered with UMASS Boston's Gerontology Institute to conduct a Needs Assessment for the future of aging services in the town of Barnstable.  Read more...

 

September & October - The Last Sunset: Supporting Parents Aging at Home series:  The Barnstable Senior Center is offering a two part series to assist with getting help to take care of your 80+ parent that wants to continue living in their own home.  Recorded interviews with representatives from Elder Services, S.H.I.N.E., Elder Law and Supportive Day Programs for a series of five TV broadcasts on Barnstable Town Channel 18 will be played during September & October.  There will be a follow-up round table discussion on October 21st from 5-7 PM at the Barnstable Senior Center to ask questions of the presenters and enter into the discussion.  The series can also be viewed on the Town of Barnstable Senior Services website.

 

Wednesdays, October 15 - February 4 - Health & Wellness program:  14-week package developed by the National Council on Aging will be offered to residents 50+, with a goal of educating and empowering older adults to master the aging process and make and maintain small but impactful changes in health behaviors.  For more information call 508/862-4750 or stop by the Senior Center.

DEPARTMENT OF TRANSITIONAL ASSISTANCE PARTNERSHIPS
View DTA Partnerships flyer with educational and cultural institutions across the Commonwealth that clients can take advantage of by showing their EBT card upon admission.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: MEALS-ON-WHEELS PROGRAM
Volunteers needed all across Cape Cod and the Islands for the Meals-on-Wheels program.  Just one hour a week can help ensure our homebound elders have a warm nutritious meal.  Mileage reimbursement is available.  Please contact Nancy Wolf at 508/394-4630 or nancy.wolf@escci.org at Elder Services of Cape Cod and the Islands.

Massachusetts Substance Abuse Helpline Connects People with Services:  For tens of thousands of Massachusetts resident struggling with alcohol and other drug related issues, 1-800-327-5050 is an important number.   Read more ... 

VETERANS CRISIS HOTLINE

The Veterans Crisis Line (1-800-273-8255, Press 1) is available 24/7/365 to provide confidential counseling and referrals for Veterans and their families.  This is an integrated national outreach effort to increase awareness and use of the Veterans Crisis Line, support and promote broader VA suicide prevention efforts, and promote help-seeking behaviors among Veterans at risk of suicide and other mental health problems. 

BARNSTABLE COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN SERVICES ON-LINE RESOURCE DIRECTORIES

The Barnstable County Department of Human Services website find.bchumanservices.net features on-line directories of health and human service resources. The Directories are a compilation of local resources organized around areas of critical need such as food, housing,  energy/fuel assistance, and services for seniors and people with disabilities. Find.bchumanservices.net is a valuable resource now available to Barnstable County residents and human service organizations. This new on-line tool is an effective and efficient way to make local information available on a 'simple to search' website.

Is your organization listed on 2-1-1?  If not, take some time and list it today!
  • Do you provide health or human services on Cape Cod or the Islands?
  • Does the public know what services you provide?
  • Do people know how to access your services?
  • Do you need assistance in finding services for your clients?  
MASS 2-1-1 is a free, confidential, 24/7 information and referral database and hotline for access to health and human services for consumers and providers.  Multi-lingual translations are also available.  To locate services dial 211 or 1-877-211-MASS on your telephone or go to www.mass211help.org
  
The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) has designated Mass 2-1-1 as the official point of contact for receiving information during a time of crisis or weather emergency.
