The Barnstable County Department of Human Services is pleased to announce a new website find.bchumanservices.net featuring on-line directories of health and human service resources. The Directories are a compilation of local resources organized around areas of critical need such as food, housing, mental health services, energy/fuel assistance, and services for seniors and people with disabilities. Find.bchumanservices.net is a valuable resource now available to Barnstable County residents and human service organizations. This new on-line tool is an effective and efficient way to make local information available on a 'simple to search' website. For more information view press release in its entirety.

NEWS FROM THE BARNSTABLE COUNTY HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION | | Human Rights Academy was held in Sandwich on Friday, April 26th. It turned out to be a beautiful day and the students and advisors were quite pleased with the event as students presented their human rights projects they had worked on since the Fall.
The next monthly meeting of the Human Rights Commission will be held on Monday, May 6th at 5:30 PM in Rms 11/12 of the Barnstable Superior Courthouse, 3195 Main St. The HRC will lwelcome three new town representatives from Barnstable, Mashpee, and Yarmouth. NEWS FROM THE COMMUNITY NETWORK OF CAPE COD | |
The Community Network of Cape Cod (CNCC) (formerly the Barnstable County Council for Children, Youth & Families) meets on the second Tuesday of each month from 3 - 4:30 PM at MSPCC, 206 Breeds Hill Rd. in Hyannis. The next meeting of CNCC is scheduled for Tuesday, May 14th and the topic of discussion will be state of substance abuse here on Cape Cod. The use and illegal sales of drugs on Cape Cod is an issue that touches all communities. Using his years of experience working both on and off Cape, Detective Chris Kent will discuss recent drug trends affecting the Cape Cod community. Sharing his experiences, warning signs of drug use, and more importantly, ways to combat the drug problem on Cape Cod, Chris helps community members and providers alike become more aware and educated on drug use. Anyone interested in learning more about this issue are welcome to attend.
The 10th Annual Youth Summit was held in March with successful results of those attending and presenting. A community summit will be held on May 8th in the Senior Cafeteria at Barnstable High School, 744 West Main St., Hyannis to discuss future youth summits.
CNCC is also a sponsor of the Enough Abuse Campaign working to engage the community in primary prevention of child sexual abuse through pro-active public education and awareness.

CAPE & ISLANDS SUICIDE PREVENTION COALITION | |
Please join us on May 9, 2013 from 11:15 - 12:45 PM for the Cape and Island Suicide Prevention Coalition Membership Meeting. Meetings are held in Rms 11/12 in the Barnstable Superior Courthouse, 3195 Main St., Barnstable.
Our guest speaker is Mary Wilson from the Cape and Islands Maternal Depression Task Force. According to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, depression is one of the most common complications of the postpartum period and the leading cause of disease related disability among women. Post-Partum Depression (PPD) typically emerges over the first two to three postpartum months but may occur at any point after delivery, most commonly during the first postpartum year. Some women note the onset of milder depressive symptoms during their pregnancy, hence the broader term "Maternal Depression".
Other agenda items: Election of Steering Committee Members and Update on Coalition sponsored activities including upcoming trainings and how to get involved in running on the CISPC Team at the 2013 Falmouth Road Race.

21ST ANNUAL MILES OF MEMORIES: WALK FOR HOPE | |
21st Annual Miles of Memories: Walk for Hope will take place on Sunday, May 5th in Hyannis and Sunday, May 19th in Harwich and at the Cape Cod Canal. The Cape Cod Canal location is also open to runners.
This Walk supports Hope Dementia and Alzheimer's Services, Hope Hospice and Hope HouseCalls. Donations from the Walk provide respite care to more than 150 families: a day of care for hospice patients; grief counseling for children who lost a parent; support groups for caregivers and their loved ones living with dementia, and so much more. The AIDS Support Group of Cape Cod and the Provincetown Business Guild present an encore showing of the Oscar nominated film: How to Survive a Plague. PARKINSON'S EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM | |
FREE educational program: "Behavioral Challenges in Parkinson's Disease" presented by Dr. Joseph Freidman and sponsored by the Parkinson's Support Network of Cape Cod (PSN). People with Parkinson's, family, and interested community members are invited to attend a program to learn about changes in mood, behavior, and sleep in Parkinson's disease. The PSN is a consortium of individuals and agencies whose goal is to provide education and support services to people on Cape Cod who are living with the diagnosis of Parkinson's Disease (PD).

ELDER SUICIDE PREVENTION TRAINING | |
The Samaritans on Cape Cod and the Islands is pleased to offer their Elder Suicide Prevention Training for Cape and Islands Communities on Monday, May 13th and Tuesday, June 11th. Participants only need to choose one date to attend. After the training, participants will be able to:
* Understand the warning signs of suicide in older adults;
* Develop strategies for early intervention and prevention; * Identify risk factors, levels of risk, and protective factors for suicide in older adults; and * Learn effective methods for active listening and engagement with older adults who are suicidal.
The training is free of charge and a light breakfast, beverages, and lunch will be provided. We are able to offer 7.0 CEUs for Registered Nurses, Licensed Mental Health Clinicians, and Social Workers. A certificate of attendance will be given to all participants. This training is being offered through a partnership with The Samaritans on Cape Cod and the Islands, Elder Services of Cape Cod and the Islands, the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health, and the Visiting Nurse Association of Cape Cod and through funding provided by the Cape and Islands Suicide Prevention Coalition, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, and the United Way.

HEALING & HELP IN THE AFTERMATH OF SUICIDE OR TRAUMATIC DEATH SEMINAR | |
Postvention focuses on promoting healing and reducing risk after a suicide or traumatic death. It is a planning tool for any community or organization to develop protocols in the event of a suicide or any sudden death and to develop an integrated response system. We need to be prepared for supporting the family and community members in the aftermath of a suicide or traumatic death.
Event scheduled for Wednesday, May 15, 2013, 10 am - 2 pm at St. Mary's Church, 3055 Main Street, Barnstable. Light Lunch will be served. LATEST STROKE TREATMENT, REHABILITATION TECHNOLOGIES SEMINAR | |
Reducing the disabling effects of stroke is a pressing concern for millions of stroke survivors and their families. Spaulding Rehabilitation Physician Greg Malloy, MD, will discuss how comprehensive rehabilitation care combined with the latest technologies can improve function and enhance independence in a special presentation at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital Cape Cod on Wednesday, May 15 at 5:00 p.m. While the incidence of stroke is alarming, there are promising new clinical treatments to help stroke survivors recover. His talk, Life after Stroke: Latest Treatments and Technologies, is part of the hospital's observance of National Stroke Awareness Month. Dr. Malloy will provide an overview of what to expect for stroke rehab care and review the latest in assistive devices and treatment modalities that include Kinesio Taping and orthotics. He will also explain how associated swallowing disorders are evaluated and effectively managed.
Seating is limited and pre-registration is required. Individuals may pre-register by calling the event line at Spaulding Cape Cod (508) 833-4210. StayStrongBoston program: to assist in the mental recovery from the recent Boston Marathon attacks, Screening for Mental Health, Inc. is partnering in a joint effort with Mass 211 and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's (SAMHSA) Disaster Distress Hotline to provide the public with online mental health assessments and treatment resources at www.StayStrongBoston.org. The website, created with support from an initiative with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health Suicide Prevention Program, will take individuals to a mental health assessment and information on how to contact the SAMSHA Disaster Distress Hotline. Substance Use in Older Adults: Read the article in the Boston Globe on medication side effects and older adults. This piece, which was the cover story in the G Section, highlights the importance of this issue, one that the Partnership has been addressing for years.
Also attached is the meeting notice for the May 15th Massachusetts Partnership on Substance Abuse in Older Adults meeting which features a presentation on the DPH Bureau of Substance Abuse Services programs-vital information on resources that you may not know about and that can affect your work with older adults with behavioral health problems.

TRAINING: ACCESSING AFFORDABLE HOUSING | |
On Tuesday, May 21 at 9:30 a.m. come learn about the resources provided by our 13 local housing authorities to help house low income, elderly, disabled and family households. We'll also provide a brief introduction to the new on-line Housing Directory on the Barnstable County Human Services website. This training will be held at the Harborview Conference Room at the Barnstable County Complex, 3195 Main St., Barnstable.
This is Part 1 of a free training series on Accessing Affordable Housing Resources sponsored by the Client Coordination Council of the C&I Regional Network to Address Homelessness. Part 2 is scheduled for Tuesday, June 18 and will cover accessing 1) private affordable housing and 2) permanent supportive housing for the homeless funded by HUD's McKinney-Vento program.

AGING WITH DIGNITY CONFERENCE | |
A conference on Preventing and Responding to Substance Use and Related Problems in Older Adults will be held on June 5, 2013 at the College of the Holy Cross, Hogan Campus Center, One College Street, Worcester, MA.
The conference is offering a variety of professional development workshops and two important plenary sessions. A. Kathryn Power, M Ed., SAMHSA's Region I Administrator, will kick off the day with an important discussion of SAMHSA's programs and services addressing both the needs of older adults and also behavioral health integration. Right after lunch we are presenting a live dramatic performance of the play "Talking with Dolores" by a local playwright, Dee O'Connor. The play poignantly examines elder mental health and substance use.
Numerous CEU's will be offered as well as certificates of attendance. Registration fee of $45 includes CEUs. Some scholarships are also available. Registration deadline is May 29, 2013. APPLIED SUICIDE INTERVENTION SKILLS (ASIST) TRAINING | |
ASIST is a two-day intensive, interactive and practice-dominated course designed to teach suicide first-aid to help a person at risk stay safe and seek further help as needed. Training is scheduled for June 6-7, 2013 from 9:00 AM - 4:30 PM at the Sage Inn in Provincetown. Cost is $125 per person includes breakfast, lunch and refreshments and all materials. SBA DISASTER ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE TO PRIVATE NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS IN MASSACHUSETTS FOR SEVERE WINTER STORMS, SNOWSTORM & FLOODING - FEBRUARY 8 & 9, 2013 | |
The U.S. Small Business Administration announced on April 23, 2013 that certain Private Non-Profit Organizations in Massachusetts that do not provide critical services of a governmental nature may be eligible to apply for low interest rate disaster loans. These loans are available as a result of a Presidential disaster declaration for Public Assistance resulting from damages caused by severe winter storm, snowstorm and flooding on February 8-9, 2013. PNPs located in Barnstable, Berkshire, Bristol, Dukes, Essex, Franklin, Hampden, Hampshire, Middlesex, Nantucket, Norfolk, Plymouth, Suffolk and Worcester counties in Massachusetts, that provide non-critical services are eligible to apply. Examples of eligible non-critical PNP organizations include, but are not limited to food kitchens, homeless shelters, museums, libraries, community centers, schools and colleges. OMBUDSMAN TRAINING | |
Register Now for Ombudsman Program Training in June
Elder Services of Cape Cod and the Islands is seeking long-term care ombudsman throughout the Cape and the Islands. Volunteers in the Ombudsman Program serve as advocates for residents of nursing and rest homes and their families. State certification training is required and provided by The Executive Office of Elder Affairs. Interested parties must be interviewed and undergo a CORI before participating. The next training will be held in the Elder Services of Cape Cod and the Islands' South Dennis office on June 17, 18 and 19, 2013. CONFERENCE: GLOBAL CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES FACING CHILDREN, YOUTH AND FAMILIES | |
A conference exploring pressing issues in education, health, and human rights around the world is scheduled for June 19-22, 2013 at Wheelock College, 200 The Riverway, Boston, MA.
In addition to facilitating important conversations, this conference will highlight exemplary programs in education, health, and human rights. We will showcase these programs in spotlights, promoting the work of individuals and organizations that Wheelock College has identified as innovative practitioners. These spotlights will be publicized through the use of digital media at various locations throughout the conference. Additionally, Spotlight Dialogues will be held beginning at 12:30 PM on both Thursday and Friday where attendees will have the opportunity to meet the individuals involved, hear more about their work, pose questions, and share ideas.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR MILITARY FAMILIES ON OR NEAR CAPE COD | |
Three opportunities for military youth/families this coming summer which are free of charge thanks to a number of partnerships and grants:
OMK-Stars, Stripes and Saddles: a camp funded by Operation Military Kids, for children between the ages of 10-13, which will run from July 15-19th at Smithfield Farms in Falmouth. This camp is specifically geared toward youth currently experiencing the deployment of an immediate family member, but will accept active duty military youth on a wait list. ANG/Stars, Stripes and Saddles:
for youth ages 8-14 with an active duty parent in the Air National Guard, and will run from August 5-9th at the Smithfield Farms in Falmouth. View flyer. This program is funded through the 4-H Air Force Partnership grant at Kansas State University in partnership with UMASS Extension.
F.I.T. Camp (Families in Transition): is a new initiative being launched and geared toward family members who are in the stage of reunification following a recent deployment. This camp will run from August 12-16 and will include equine therapy, dinner and supportive group therapy. Please note that there will be babysitting on site for families with children who are too young to participate. This exciting new program is possible thanks to the generosity of Heroes in Transition.

RECIPIENTS AND VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR HOUSING ASSISTANCE CORPS "BIG FIX" IN MASHPEE | |
Following the success of the Barnstable Big Fix in 2010, the Sandwich Big Fix in 2011 and the Dennis Big Fix last year, Housing Assistance Corporation will hold the event again, this time in Mashpee. The Mashpee Big Fix, scheduled for September 28, will provide an opportunity for community volunteers to come together to assist seniors, veterans and disabled residents in Mashpee with landscaping and home repair tasks. Working with the Town of Mashpee, HAC is identifying homeowners in need of assistance. On Sept. 28, teams of skilled professionals and community volunteers will meet at their homes and complete the needed tasks.

SAMARITAN SURVIVOR SUPPORT GROUPS | | Over 800,000 people worldwide end their lives annually. Seven to ten people -- parents, children, siblings, aunts, uncles, grandparents, grandchildren and close friends -- deeply feel the devastation of each loss. That means that approximately 5 million "survivors" are left behind every year.
Samaritans has expanded the number of sites on the Cape & Islands for their survivor support groups including Falmouth, Hyannis and Nantucket. These groups honor and respect the needs of the survivors, provide unconditional emotional support, help survivors gain courage and comfort from one another, and deal with a unique grief that is often not understood by others.
