This forum is the second in a series of aging and disability forums hosted by the Barnstable County Department of Human Services. The forum will highlight the local long term services and supports systems. This event is for anyone interested in learning more about the long term service systems on Cape Cod. The Barnstable County Department of Human Services is pleased to announce a new website find.bchumanservices.net featuring on-line directories of health and human service resources. The Directories are a compilation of local resources organized around areas of critical need such as food, housing, mental health services, energy/fuel assistance, and services for seniors and people with disabilities. Find.bchumanservices.net is a valuable resource now available to Barnstable County residents and human service organizations. This new on-line tool is an effective and efficient way to make local information available on a 'simple to search' website. For more information view press release in its entirety.

APRIL IS SEXUAL ASSAULT AWARENESS MONTH | |
Look for pinwheel gardens at various TD Bank sites around Cape Cod. The Pinwheel Project is a public awareness campaign sponsored by Children's Cove, designed to bring attention to child sexual abuse in our community. It is intended to show the public in a very dramatic way that child sexual abuse happens everywhere and encourages us to focus on prevention as part of the plan to break the cycle. Children's Cove services over 200 child victims and their family members annually on Cape Cod & the Islands. Read more ...

CAPE COD MEDICAL RESERVE CORPS NEWS | |
The Cape Cod Medical Reserve Corps will have a garden on the Barnstable County Complex once again this year to raise vegetables to donate to the local food pantries. The first planning meeting is Tuesday, April 9th at 4:30 PM in the Medical Reserve Corps office in the Dept. of Health & Environment on Barnstable County Complex (red brick old jail building at the top of the hill). The Cape Cod Medical Reserve Corps is conducting a disaster mental health survey to identify the level and type of training those behavioral health providers on the Cape and Islands have completed. NEWS FROM WE CAN CENTER | |
- Beginning on April 2nd WE CAN will be holding INFO SESSIONS throughout the Cape on the PathMakers program. The PathMakers program is WE CAN's signature ten-month mentoring program where a woman walks beside another woman on her journey as she strives toward achieving a goal she has set for herself. WE CAN is looking for women to be both PathMakers and Mentoring Partners. Attend a session and learn more about this potentially life changing Program. Work Support Boot Camp INFO session: Are you working with someone who is looking for work or underemployed? WE CAN invites you to come and learn about this unique program at one of the INFO sessions scheduled for Monday evening, April 22nd or Tuesday morning, April 23rd at the WE CAN Conference Center, 783 Rt. 28, Harwich Port. Session will include discussion about the structure and content of the upcoming Boot Camp with an emphasis on creating and finding sustainable work on Cape Cod and the steps contained in the " the work of finding work". Divorce Boot Camp scheduled for Saturday, May 4th, 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM at the Falmouth Public Library. Women who attend this workshop will learn about how to prepare for divorce and ways to save money. SAMARITANS OFFER ELDER SUICIDE PREVENTION TRAINING | |
The Samaritans on Cape Cod and the Islands is pleased to offer their Elder Suicide Prevention Training for Cape and Islands Communities on Tuesday, April 30th and Tuesday, June 11th. Participants only need to choose one date to attend. After the training, participants will be able to:
* Understand the warning signs of suicide in older adults;
* Develop strategies for early intervention and prevention; * Identify risk factors, levels of risk, and protective factors for suicide in older adults; and * Learn effective methods for active listening and engagement with older adults who are suicidal.
The training is FREE of charge and a light breakfast, beverages, and lunch will be provided. We are able to offer 7.0 CEUs for Registered Nurses, Licensed Mental Health Clinicians, and Social Workers. A certificate of attendance will be given to all participants.
This training is being offered through a partnership with The Samaritans on Cape Cod and the Islands, Elder Services of Cape Cod and the Islands, the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health, and the Visiting Nurse Association of Cape Cod and through funding provided by the Cape and Islands Suicide Prevention Coalition, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, and the United Way.

GRANT OPPORTUNITY - MASSACHUSETTS NAVIGATOR PROGRAM | |
As part of the implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) in Massachusetts, the Health Connector has released a Notice of Grant Opportunity for the Massachusetts Navigator Program. For additional information see The Notice posted on Comm-PASS. Application deadline: April 30, 2013, 3:00 PM.
In Massachusetts, Navigators will assist consumers (individuals, families and small businesses) using culturally and linguistically appropriate methods to: learn about their subsidized and unsubsidized health care coverage options; access any applicable federal tax credits and other state and federal subsidies; and enroll in a health plan.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM: LIVING WITH BIPOLAR DISORDER | | This two-hour educational program will show the film Living with Bipolar Disorder followed by a discussion on Wednesday, May 1, 2013, 6:30pm-8:30pm at McLean Hospital - Pierce Hall, 115 Mill Street, Belmont, MA.
Living with Bipolar Disorder is a 43 minute film developed by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. It features an introduction by Joe Pantoliano, an actor and television star, and a review of the illness by our clinical expert Dr. Joe Calabrese from Case Medical Center, Cleveland, Ohio. The film features the stories as told by three people who have been treated for bipolar disorder as well as the widow of a man who died by suicide who most likely suffered from bipolar. The clinical expert, Dr. Calabrese, offers medical commentary after each story, and both Dr. Calabrese and Joe Pantoliano offer closing comments. We encourage everyone interested in learning more about Bipolar Disorder to attend this event: patients, families and clinicians are all welcome. Light food and refreshments will be served.
This free program is offered by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) Boston Chapter in partnership with McLean Hospital, a Harvard Medical School Affiliate. Although this is a free event, we encourage everyone planning to attend to pre-register so we can plan for food and refreshments.

EXPANDING THE TABLE AND REDUCING DISPARITIES: THE 4TH ANNUAL PATIENT NAVIGATOR/COMMUNITY HEALTH WORKER CONFERENCE | |
In their unique roles, patient navigators and community health workers serve as brokers, helping patients access the health care system and assisting them in navigating barriers to care. In this fourth Patient Navigator/Community Health Worker conference, the goal is to provide professional development and networking opportunities, along with tools, resources, and practical skills building sessions. The conference theme will focus on the importance of bringing more people into these programs and understanding the role of patient navigators and community health workers in helping to reduce health disparities, allowing for greater equity. The conference series is designed for patient navigators, community health workers and those involved in developing patient navigator programs throughout the state and country.

The Conference is scheduled for Thursday, May 9, 2013 at the Four Points by Sheraton Norwood, 1125 Boston Providence Turnpike, Norwood, MA. The Women's Health Network, a program of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, in partnership with the US Department of Health and Human Services Office on Women's Health Region I, provides funding for this conference.
Keynote speakers, networking, resource and poster sessions are combined with breakout sessions that offer interactive skills-based learning. NEWS FROM THE BOYS & GIRLS CLUB OF CAPE COD | | The Boys & Girls Club runs a field-trip based Summer Day Camp that is open to all children, going into grades 1-9, who live on, or visit, Cape Cod. The Camp runs for nine weeks beginning Wednesday, June 26 (due to the hurricane & snow days) and ending August 23. Camp hours are 9AM thru 5PM daily. Children are welcome any time after 8:30 AM and must be picked up no later than 5:15 PM. Early drop off at 7:15 and late pick up until 6:15 are available for an additional fee. Tuition for camp is $160 per week for the first child and $145 for the second child or more, but due to snow days that extend into the first week of camp, the June 26th week will begin on Wednesday and have a special reduced rate of $95 per child. Tuition includes the fee for 2-3 field trips a week. Click here to see the schedule for each age group with a list of the trips for each week and to download the required paperwork.
The Boys & Girls Club of Cape Cod is Open during April Vacation Week from 8:30am - 5:30pm for any Cape Cod child age 6 and up, and in grades 1- 8. The program at the Club is a drop-in program and there is no need to make a reservation unless the child is going on one of the field trips. There will be staff-supervised activities all day long, including arts and crafts, sports, games, computers, video games, and other special vacation events. The Clubhouse Vacation Program is free for members and only $5 a day for non-members. Children must bring a lunch and two snacks if they are going to be at the Club all day. In addition, the Boys & Girls Club has also planned special field trips during April Vacation. There is an additional charge for each of the trips and they are filled on a first come, first served basis. The Club's trained professional staff will accompany the children on the field trips and supervise them while there. The Veterans Crisis Line (1-800-273-8255, Press 1) is available 24/7/365 to provide confidential counseling and referrals for Veterans and their families. This is an integrated national outreach effort to increase awareness and use of the Veterans Crisis Line, support and promote broader VA suicide prevention efforts, and promote help-seeking behaviors among Veterans at risk of suicide and other mental health problems. SAMARITAN SURVIVOR SUPPORT GROUPS | | Over 800,000 people worldwide end their lives annually. Seven to ten people -- parents, children, siblings, aunts, uncles, grandparents, grandchildren and close friends -- deeply feel the devastation of each loss. That means that approximately 5 million "survivors" are left behind every year.
Samaritans has expanded the number of sites on the Cape & Islands for their survivor support groups including Falmouth, Hyannis and Nantucket. These groups honor and respect the needs of the survivors, provide unconditional emotional support, help survivors gain courage and comfort from one another, and deal with a unique grief that is often not understood by others.
