Author and FASRI parent, Ann Hood shares lessons on language, love, and "l'accent"

Click below to read the speech given by bestselling author and FASRI parent, Ann Hood at the Installation ceremony of Jean-Yves Carpanse in October. She provides an insightful look at the different ways languages impact our families and our lives: "In Paris, we all watched in amazement and delight as Annabelle asked directions in perfect French and translated menus for us. One day, as we strolled around Montmarte, I saw a hair salon and Annabelle and I decided to get haircuts. In we went. The proprietor began talking to me in rapid French, and before I could mutter an apology, Annabelle began talking back, negotiating prices and specifics of how we wanted our hair cut. The man looked at me, stunned, and in heavily accented French asked, 'Where is she from to have this beautiful accent?'".

For the new people joining the FASRI faculty this year, the journey to Providence was a far more lengthy process than the typical six-hour plane ride from Charles de Gaulle to Boston. "The process of becoming an educator in France is extremely rigorous and competitive," notes Head of School, Jean-Yves Carpanse. "By the time they arrive at FASRI they have undergone years of training. Not only that, but they must compete against their peers to qualify for certification by the Ministry of Education." Jean-Yves Carpanse launches series with discussion of French network

"This is a leap of faith for many American parents, and we need to build a better understanding of our way of teaching." Monsieur Carpanse described the French approach to education to parents this all as he kicked off his Caf with the Head of School Forum Series this year. He describes the French approach as rigorous but flexible at the same time, noting, for example, there is a strong emphasis on educating the whole person in an organic way, adapting teaching methods to each learner. There are basic performance guidelines and yardsticks, but to encourage meaningful growth, it can't be too rigid; "Teachers and college professors love students from our network of French Schools because they make their classrooms more interesting by analyzing and critiquing the material they learn, and our alumni are amazing problem solvers," he said. The enormous success of the alumni from the French network makes this approach a strong draw for parents. The second topic for Caf with the HOS Forum Series will cover our new programs and will be held on Wednesday, January 14, at 4pm; Tuesday, January 20, at 8:30am; and Wednesday January 21, at 4pm.
