South Carolina Judge Rules that SC Department of Corrections Treatment of Mentally Ill Inmates
is Unconstitutional and Threatens Lives
The State paper announced on Thursday, January 9, 2014 that Judge Micheal Baxley of Hartsville, SC has ruled against the SC Department of Corrections in a class action lawsuit brought against the prison system by South Carolina's Protection and Advocacy for People with Disabilities and Columbia's Nelson Mullins law firm in 2005 stating that the SC Department of Corrections was not providing "a reasonable and adequate system for the mental health care of inmates suffering from mental illness." The paper stated that "Of the 22,000 inmates in the state's prison system, an estimated 3,500 have serious mental illnesses, based on evidence presented during a 2012 nonjury trial in the case."
Gloria Prevost of Protection and Advocacy for People with Disabilities was quoted, "We're extraordinary pleased- the judge has validated concerns a lot of us have had for years, and he recognized it is time for a change."

Homeless Advocates to Count Homeless on January 23, 2014 Point in Time Count
Members of the South Carolina Coalition for the Homeless will be conducting the sixth annual statewide Point in Time Count of the Homeless as mandated by US HUD. A large percentage of South Carolina's homeless suffer from chronic mental illness and substance abuse. The information gained from the 2014 Point In Time Count will help decision makers allocate resources and provide housing based upon the determined need.
