FROM SUPERINTENDENT MUSSOLINE
It's May! We made it through another winter and a very interesting presidential primary.
If you look in the upcoming events section for the next two weeks, you will see an abundance of wonderful events our staff and students have planned for our community. There are multiple spring concerts and several art shows to attend.
Studies throughout the years have long concluded that children exposed to drama, music and art are often more proficient at reading, writing and math. These findings show that students who received a good arts education did better on standardized tests, improved their social skills and were more motivated than those who had reduced or no access. Despite these studies, art programs in some public school districts across our nation have been eliminated due to funding cuts or an emphasis to spend art budget line funds on improving core subjects.

A new community playground for the district
Twenty-five years ago, parents, businesses and community members throughout the Downingtown area came together to build an extraordinary playground on land adjacent to East Ward Elementary School. For many years, children from Downingtown and beyond have all enjoyed the benefits of playing on the Castle Playground. Perhaps you remember a time in your childhood when you raced across the bridges, hid in the turrets or slid down those wide, wooden slides on a bright, summer day.
Sadly, the sentinel entrance into the Downingtown community, the castle playground at East Ward, must be taken down for safety reasons at the end of this school year. Shortly after the last day of school, the structure will be dismantled. We are asking for your help to construct a new one.

| Charlotte's Web at Uwchlan Hills
The entire Uwchlan Hills community was invited to read (or reread) Charlotte's Web. Activities were sent home for the student and the entire family to do together. This was not just about reading Charlotte's Web, but about bringing families, and the entire community, together under the umbrella of a shared experience. Our staff has decorated the entire school to look like Zuckerman's farm. We are all excited to do something fun together!

Earth Day celebrated at DHS East
DHS East High School's AP Environmental Science classes completed a stewardship project in celebration of Earth Day. The students volunteered their time and energy to help clean up some of the refuse that was found on the school grounds. Students sorted recyclable materials from trash and even found an old tent in "East's Woods" that will be re-purposed as tarps for off-site equipment coverage and will not contribute to further landfill waste as the other items.
