FROM SUPERINTENDENT MUSSOLINE
This week our district has been participating in the annual nation-wide event known as "Read Across America" week. Sponsored by the National Education Association, this program focuses on motivating children and teens to read through events, partnerships and reading resources.
Read Across America honors the birthday of an American genius, Theo Geisel, or Dr. Seuss as he is best known. As you can see from the video below this box, I had a lot of fun reading Dr. Seuss's book Oh the Places You'll Go. The video features many of our talented students.
Theo Geisel was a cartoonist, animator, book publisher and the author of more than 60 books. Sixteen of his books appear on the all time top 100 hardcover books according to Publisher's Weekly. (Green Eggs and Ham is #4) His quirky characters both teach and entertain. From the redeemed Grinch to the faithful Horton, he used the simplest of words to make our imaginations soar.
Dr Seuss books are great fun to share with your child and, as a bonus, they'll also help him develop something called phonological awareness, a critical skill for learning to read later on. We have added a fun survey in this week's newsletter. Let us know what your favorite Dr. Seuss book is. I'll read the winning selection next year on the 2017 Read Across America Day video. LMS Pulsera Project
Earlier this year, students in Ms. Meyer's Spanish II classes collected donations in exchange for "Pulsera" bracelets. These bracelets are hand crafted in Nicaragua. As usual, the LMS community stepped up and completely sold out of all bracelets, raising $2,200 to go toward education and social programs in Nicaragua. To show their appreciation, the folks at Pulsera rewarded our school by sending us hand-made maracas with our school name carved on the outside.
