FROM SUPERINTENDENT MUSSOLINE
On Wednesday night, we held our annual Organization Meeting as per the Pennsylvania School Code. That yearly December meeting marks the time where board leadership positions are chosen, some housekeeping items are dusted off, and new board members are sworn in. Returning school directors Jane Bertone, Colleen Cranney, Carl Croft, Jaime Mehler and newcomer Ted Rauth were sworn into office by Judge Jeff Velocchi. They joined fellow directors Barbara Albright, David Kring, Suzanne Simonelli, and Bob Yorczyk at the Board table. These folks are all volunteers, sharing their expertise, knowledge and time to better their school community.
Taking on board leadership roles for the next year will be President Colleen Cranney and Vice President Carl Croft. They step into the "hard to fill" shoes of outgoing President Jane Bertone and Vice President Bob Yorczyk. Meeting dates were set for the second Wednesday of each month (except for June - the meeting will be held on Monday, 6/6 due to graduations).
Leading to the upcoming winter holiday break and since the "Thanksgiving Turn off and Tune Into your Family" was met with great enthusiasm. I will ask again for the DASD email server to be off from Wednesday evening 12/23 at midnight through Sunday evening 12/27 ending at midnight. The district will be open for business December 28, 29, 30 & 31st so email will be open to all. We will shut down the server again from 12/31 at 5:00 p.m.to 1/3 at noon.
Wishing everyone productive days leading to the break and much family fun during these winter holidays.

Surprise concert at board meeting Members of the DHS West Blue and Gold band surprised arriving school board members and the audience with a performance in the parking lot of the Central Administration building on Wednesday. The band was being honored at the board meeting for their first place finish in the state championships last month.
"Hour of Coding" in our schools Anyone can learn to "code", and that includes both the youngest and oldest in our schools. Many of our elementary students had a chance this week to try coding in this annual, national event. Some of our teachers even took the time to learn the basics of computer programming. According to the code website ( https://code.org/) there are currently 604,689 open computing jobs nationwide while only 38,175 computer science students graduated into the workforce. DASD is helping to change that with its innovative curriculum.
Nike Cross Nationals West junior Aislinn Devlin placed ninth in the nation at the Nike Cross Nationals in Portland Oregon. The West Whippet Boys (PA state champions) finished in 17th place.
