At the Battle of the Brains
From the Superintendent....

I can't believe it's Thanksgiving already! It seems as though we just started school yesterday.

This special day set aside yearly is a time to acknowledge the good deeds of fellowmen and to think thankful thoughts. Thankful thoughts of how lucky we are. Thanksgiving thoughts of people who are not as lucky. I think of how trying life could be when your child is hungry, your body wracked with pain, or you have no idea where you and your family will find a place to sleep. So, for just a few minutes on Thanksgiving Day, as you're Tuning In To Your Families and Turning Off life's constant distractions, as you're being thankful for all that you have, step outside your situation and just "be."

Director of the CIA John O Brennan recently won The National Hero Award from the Thurgood Marshall Foundation. In his acceptance speech, Brennan gave thanks to two people who deeply touched his life. One was his father. The second was Farouk Alazzam, a 3rd grader from East Ward Elementary School who met Mr. Brennan shortly before he lost his battle with cancer

Principal Argonish and others pieced together a Home-Made Make A Wish trip to CIA Headquarters for Farouk. You see Farouk, who died of cancer before his 9th birthday, always wanted to be a CIA agent. As you will see when you watch the video, he got his wish. You can see and hear the impact this child had straight from the head of the CIA himself. How thankful John Brennan was to have met Farouk.

On behalf of the Board of School Directors and the Administration, I wish you and yours a happy and relaxing Thanksgiving holiday.

Superintendent

Battle of the Brains Champions
The Downingtown STEM Academy Academic Team won by one question to beat out opponents DHS East and DHS West at the 4th Annual Battle of the Brains.  DHS East placed second with DHS West a close third.

Another State Championship for DHS West
Last week we announced that the DHS West Cross Country Team had placed first in their state championship competition.  This week, we congratulate another state champion - and another DHS West organization.  The DHS West Blue and Gold Marching Band won the 2015 Cavalcade of Bands Patriot A Championships. In addition to finishing in first place, the band won High Percussion, High Auxiliary, High Overall Effect, High Visual, and High Music. The Band received a police escort on their return home!
